Chapter 34 - Windows

I run out of Lindsey's house, hearing her screaming for me to come back, but I refuse to listen. I cry and pray as I run down the busy streets, pleading for Venus to be alright. She couldn't be at home. She knew it was dangerous back there. In only a matter of days, home turned into her worst nightmare, and she feared what could happen if she ever walked through that door again.

Running as fast as I can, I ignore the pain pressing into my sides as I raced to her. I need to get to her before anyone can hurt her. I need to be there to protect her. If I wasn't, I'd have to kiss the love of my life goodbye.

I run up to Venus's father's front door and pound, crying as I plead for her to answer. A tall woman answers the door, staring at me curiously. "Can I help you?"

I stand on the front porch, afraid to push past her and run upstairs to find Venus. Instead, I fold my hands in front of me and stare at the woman pleadingly.

"You must be Cameron," she says. "I'm Beatrice. I had Venus come back and get her stuff while her dad's not here. I don't need him giving me another migraine with his screaming," she groaned. "I'd invite you in, but I'm sure Venus is almost done. She'll be back over there shortly."

Beatrice closes the door in my face, and I huff as I cut through the lawn to my house and run upstairs. Opening the window, I look in to find Venus packing some of the books of her bookshelf. She doesn't notice me, so I grab an eraser from my desk and throw it at the window.

Venus glances back at me and smiled wide. She walks up to the window and opens it. "Hey, babe. I'm sorry I didn't tell you I'd be here. I was worried you'd panic."

I did, I huff.

"I'm sorry." She looks at something in her room and bites her lip. "You know how I said I was kicked out because my dad doesn't accept my life choices?"

I nod.

"Well, he only found out, because he saw these," Venus explains as she holds up some construction boards. "I planned to do this sooner, but I never thought I would actually get the chance to show you."

Show me now, I encourage.

Venus shakes her hands and takes a deep breath before giggling nervously at me. She holds up the construction boards and smiles.

This was where I first saw you.

I thought you were deaf.

So we talked like this all night.

I knew right then and there.

I would never meet another woman,

Who was more beautiful than you.

I feel tears swell in my eyes, but I quickly wipe them away so I can see what Venus wrote.

She lowers the boards and signs, I knew sign language because of Lucas, but I never tried to perfect it and become fluent, because I thought I knew everything I needed to know. But when I knew it would be easier to sign with you, I wanted to learn more and understand how to communicate with you.

All I ever did anymore was study sign language so I could perfect it and become fluent, not just good enough. I never want to be just good enough for you. I want to prove myself time and time again that I am not going anywhere and that I care about you and will always be there by your side. I will protect you from anyone who mocks you for being mute. I will hold you and make you feel loved every day, because I know without a shadow of a doubt in my heart that...

Venus points to her eye, places her hands over her heart, and points at me as she cries tears of joy. I love you.

I cover my mouth with my hands, crying just as much as she was as we gaze at each other through the window. There is no doubt in my heart either that I am in love with Venus. I want to prove to her that I love her just as much, but nothing I could do would compare to how she proved it to me.

Yet everything in me finally pushed forward, encouraging me to open my mouth and reveal through a hoarse whisper, "I love you."
