Chapter 35 - L-O-V-E

The gentle breeze blows in through the window, brushing the curtains behind my back. With shaking hands, I lightly graze over my neck where a dull ache forms. I hadn't talked since I was ten, a mere seven years ago. I forgot how I sounded. It was the most unattractive sound. It was dark and hoarse, like a woman waking up from a coma and asking for water to quench her dry throat.

Venus screams as she lifts her hands to cover her mouth, her eyes growing three sizes. "Did you just talk?"

I nod slowly as more tears form in my eyes. I talked. I actually talked. Love makes you do crazy things, and the desire to prove my love to Venus encouraged me to speak. I break down in tears and fall to the floor, overwhelmed by it all.

"Cameron!" dad screams as he runs up the stairs and bursts into my room. "Cameron, oh God!"

"She talked!" Venus yells through the window, and dad looks through my window at her. "She just spoke. We need to get her to a doctor."

Dad jerks his head down to me, and smile as I cry more. "You spoke?"

"Yes," I reply.

Right away, dad drops to his knees and hugs me tight. "My baby girl spoke."

"We need to see an ENT. Oh, God, I still need to move this shit. Oh, who gives a fuck! We need to see an ENT!" Venus freaks out as she frantically runs around her room. I laugh. I love that woman so damn much.

"Talking is like a skill. If you don't talk for a long time, you lose that skill," the ENT explained. "Was there ever a time before now where you attempted to talk but couldn't?"

I shook my head.

"Is she going to be able to talk again?" Venus asks, squeezing my hand.

"She should. Her vocal skills are rusty, so I suggest she sees a speech therapist to help work on those skills. In the meantime, make sure not to overuse your voice. That will create a whole new problem." The ENT smiles as she stands up and shakes my hand. "I'm happy you found your voice."

How's your dad going to take all your stuff being gone? I ask as Venus places a box on her new bed in her new room.

"Oh, he won't notice. He didn't know I was coming over. I asked Beatrice specifically because I knew she wouldn't care enough to forbid me from going back in there," Venus shrugs.

I'm sorry, I pout.

"Don't be," she smirks as she pushes hair out of my face. "Now I get to live with you and a dad who's actually cool." Venus trails her fingers down my cheek, and I twist my head to kiss her fingertips. "You are so cute."

"So are you," I whisper.

"As much as I love to hear your voice, I don't want you to strain it. I would hate it if you lost your voice again, permanently this time," she pouts.

I'll be fine with a few words here and there, I sign to make her happy. I only talk when you're around.

"And as honored as I am, I don't want you to hurt yourself. I can go the rest of my life without ever hearing your voice again, and you know why?" she asked.

Why?

"Because the first words I heard slip past those beautiful lips of yours are the only words I ever needed to hear from you," she declared.

"I love you," I whisper.

"I love you, too," she repeats.
