Macon could register the flashes of light all around her as conscientiousness faded in and out. He held her against his chest.  The beat of his heart thrummed in time with hers.

Their breaths erratic as he ran-each crash of his feet jostling her.

Bits of gravel exploded behind them as enemy fire was all too close.

From his side he pulled at his gun, returning the blast.

After several shots, the enemy fire ceased, and Macon eased as he continue his sprint across the landscape.

"Uuugh," the groan slipped from his mouth as he made impact with the ground. He'd jumped from
some some height and sunk to his knees for only a moment.

She could see Regent pods in the distance, lit with their hypnotic lavender lights, as he scrambled with her.

He ran like a man possessed- a wild look in his eyes.

She knew she should be afraid, but it wasn't in her to care- it was all she could do to hang on to consciousness.

"Commander," shouts came from a distance that was closer than she'd thought only moments before.

"She needs help." He shouted over the sound in the distant as he studied her face.

His hand wiped the damp strands out of her face as he knelt down with her-Her body limp over his knees, but her eyes fluttered open.

He brought his forehead to hers, and she did her best to meet his eyes.  'Why was it so hard to focus?'

There was an intensity there that made her body quake.

"I love you," he whispered, "I'm not going to lose you- okay..."

The crunch of ground caught Xane's attention.

Chiss and Anders were behind them now.  Anders sunk to the ground in a heap.

"We need medical," Chiss called as his voice was strained.

"Not here," a voice shouted. "There seeing to the carnage from the feast- you'll have to transport if you want them seen."

"Damn." Xane breathed.

He closed his eyes and took in a deep breath as though what he was about to say was brought him physical pain.  "Chiss- take them, I can't leave."

Macon's eyes shot to the Commander as the words sobered her.

"No-" she managed the plea.

Her heart squeezed with the thought of being away from him.

He bit back whatever emotion that had taken over him, and he found resolve as he stood with her once more.

He couldn't bring himself to look at her as he made his way to Chiss's pod and laid her inside the shuttle.  He took off his coat and rolled it, placing it under her head.

"Be with you soon." He said as he walked away- her heart fracturing with each step begging him to look back, just once.
