We all sat down on the picnic blanket that was carefully laid down on the perfectly cut green grass. My head was on Jace's lap as his fingers delicately played with the ends of my hair. Jace and his Mum were deep in conversation, Skylar off playing on the play equipment as I admired the vast, infinite blue sky that was hovering above us.

Beams of the warm sunlight warmed my body as my eyes followed the direction of a flock of black birds that were flying in the sky in a triangular formation. The constant vibrant blue that the sky was painted in was frequently interrupted by large groups of soft white. The clouds looked like if one were to reach up and touch them, they would feel like the softest and fluffiest thing one had ever experienced.

The distant sound of chatter filled my ears.

I glanced up at the brown-haired and blue-eyed guy I liked as he enthusiastically chatted with his Mother. His eyes were nearly as vibrant as the blue sky above, almost sparkling in the light. I observed as his jaw moved up and down with every word that was said, using his hand to add emphasis to what he was saying, his other hand twirling the end of my curls with his fingers.

The happy sound of an ice cream truck sang through the air, calling all the children and pulling their attention towards itself. I quietly chuckled when I heard one kid scream, another shouting, "Ice cream," like it was a battle cry. Several little people eagerly crowded the truck, others running towards their families, just as Sky was running in our direction right now.

"Skylar, you really need to stop running around. We don't want you to trip and fall onto your arm and break it again," Kate told Sky.

"Okay, Mom," she said sounding bored and looking like she was holding back an eye roll, "Jay?" Sky speedily changed the focus off her Mum and onto Jace.

"Yeah?" Jace replied, looking up at her as she stood next to him.

"Can you get me an ice cream?"

"Why didn't you just ask Mom?" I sat up off of his lap and moved next to him. Jace glanced over to me and shifted his body so that he was closer to me. What's up with him today?

"Jay. You know why," Sky said in a bored tone. Her sassiness was amusing to watch.

"I don't actually," Jace teased one of his eyebrows raised.

Sky deeply sighed, her arms hanging lowly on her sides, "Because Mom would have said no. You say yes," she grinned saying the last part, raising her eyebrows twice, her arms behind her back. She twisted her body slowly side-to-side, making the bottom of her dress twirl around her legs. When Jace hesitated, she stuck her bottom lip and made her eyes rounder, giving him the puppy dog eyes.

A laugh escaped my lips when Jace sighed but stood up, nonetheless.

"Do you want anything?"

"No, I'm fine thanks," Kate replied, looking up from her phone just to answer.

"Ivy?"

"Uh. Can I have a Calippo please?"

"Sure. I'll be back in a second." I watched as Sky took hold of Jace's hand as they walked towards the truck.

Sky skipped excitedly next to Jace. He looked down at her and smiled as she said something to him, making him laugh. I observed as he pulled Sky into a side hug.

"They have always been close like that. Even more so when their Dad died." I turned to look at Kate. She was sitting there just as I was, watching the both of them. The latter part of what she said was new to me. Jace never really spoke to me about his Dad or anyone really till now.

"I can imagine," I said through a small smile.

"Although, I think it is pretty clear who the boss of them is. Jace just can't say no to her."

"I can see why. She is an extremely sweet kid." I fully twisted my body so that I was fully facing Kate. It felt like she was going to say or ask something that needed my full attention.

"What about Jace? You two looked very comfortable together," she questioned, rubbing her lips together afterwards. There it was, the question.

All I could do was smile and nod. I didn't want to lie and say that everything was perfect and nothing had happened – good or bad – but I also didn't want to come across as ungrateful or that I create problems.

"He told me what happened - what you said in the car on the way here." A confused expression crossed my features but was quickly covered by a knowing look. She's talking about when I told Jace that I don't know where I stand with him. I felt slightly embarrassed at the fact that Kate knew but it was how I was feeling.

"You know, I respect you for speaking up. Calling him out as you guys would say. Not many people would do that, they would carry on like it doesn't matter."

I smiled at Kate, "Thank you. I just find it hard sometimes because some people can lie so easily, so it's working out who is lying and who is telling the truth. I question if I mean as much to him as he does to me," I briefly and truthfully explained. I didn't want to drag his Mum into any of this, so I kept it simple. She didn't need to be dragged into our problems.

I heard a small sigh come from Kate's direction before she spoke, "Sky is one of the most important people in Jace's life, he thinks the world of her much like she looks up to him," she smiled to herself at the thought of her two children.

"He likes to protect her and that includes from people. Jace has had a few girlfriends before," I interrupted her with a laugh, remembering how Sky had worded it yesterday.

"Yeah. Sky mentioned, that, and I quote, he has had lots of girlfriends."

Kate rolled her eyes, laughing as well, "That child I swear..." I laughed even harder for a second before getting back to what Kate was telling me.

"Well, even with his lots of past girlfriends, he has only ever introduced one to Sky before you. He only introduces people that are important to him to Sky."

Silence filled the air between us after that was said.

I heard Skylar chatting excitedly to her Mum about something as I sat there helplessly grinning at the words Kate just spoke.

She was implying that I was important to him. A part of me almost couldn't believe that, especially with the way he had acted, but if that was true the one person that would know would be his Mother.
