An overwhelming feeling of weakness took hold of Static's body as he continued to fly both you and him to the Asylum, the blue highlights around his Saucer flickering as you both crossed over a still destroyed bridge.
That feeling only amplified as he felt-
"Shit"
The power sustaining your guys' method of transportation ran out, causing the both of you to begin to fall.
You both crashed into the ground, Static's Saucer rolling off somewhere in the distance while both you and the hero struggled to stay conscious from the impact.
Both of you laid there for a few moments, seemingly content with laying on the ground and closing your eyes.
However, you and the Hero forced yourselves back to your feet, if not in a slow and agonizing looking way.
As you became aware of your surroundings you realized you were at the entrance to the Asylum, as you had landed right in front of the door.
Shakily standing up, you each began to lean on each other, using each other as support to balance the other out and not collapse as you guided one another to the doorway.
Shakily raising your hand, you knocked on the madhouse's doors in a weird sequence, which after almost ten seconds of waiting caused a beep to be heard from the door.
Static didn't have time to question it, as you had already begun to move forward into the dark hallway that led to the main lounge.
Not having the energy to close the door behind him, Static followed you, resting his body against the corridors walls the first chance he got.
You did the same, only difference being your hand was using it as support to stop yourself from collapsing.
Both of you stayed there, dawn creaking in through the slightly opened door, lighting up bits of the space around you both, but also causing the shadows the seem darker than normal.
Your back was to the Hero, both of your chests rising and falling intensely as fatigue had finally set in.
"Y-You...."
Your voice trailed off as you tried to speak, which in turn caused Static to turn his head to you.
"What was that"
"W-What?"
"What the fuck, was that"
Your uneven breaths had stopped while your figure was completely still. Static could only stare at your back.
Suddenly you turned your body, grabbing Static by the cloth around his shoulders and pinning him against the wall.
"WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT STATIC?!!!"
Your yell echoed across the empty space around you, a look of desperation and rage in your face.
"I- I-.....I don't"-
"You froze"
The Hero flinched, his eyes widening as the visions of red wrapping around ran through his head once more.
"You FROZE STATIC!!! THAT WAS IT, IF ZATANNA DIDN'T BY SOME MIRACLE COLLAPSE THEN THAT WAS THE END!!"
Your fist connected with the wall beside his head as you continued to yell at him, your voice almost breaking as you tried to catch your breath in between your outbursts.
"How are we supposed to save Gotham if on our first mission we almost fail?"
Static's eyes began to get watery as he realized what you were implying, and he lowered his head.
"We can't give up on G"-
"We were almost taken away because of you"
You let go of his clothes, moving back a little right after. But the Hero didn't move.
"All you had to do was follow through, that was it. But you couldn't. YOU COULDN'T! I'M NOT STUPID ENOUGH TO THINK YOU DON'T HAVE YOUR OWN DEMONS STATIC!!"
The migraine that had disappeared came back in full as you continued, but you didn't pay any attention to it.
"But the minute you let those demons put someone who's supposed put their life into your hands in danger, how are they supposed to trust you enough to put their life into your hands a second time"
Your voice was low, nothing more than a murmur. But the hallway carried it so that it was clear enough for the unresponsive Hero to hear.
"What if we're in a similar situation, and you freeze again. Then I die? Because believe me there will come a day where that happens!"
Static's hands clenched into fists, but his expression never changed. That is, until he turned his head up and saw your expression.
Many different emotions were present on your face. Frustration, disappointment, anger, sadness, but one that Static noticed was
Grief.
"How can we save Gotham if the one person who's supposed to have my back can't?"
"I don't know"
His voice was quiet as he spoke, almost docile.
"You don't know?"
"I don't know"
"You don't know"
You laughed a little, your hand making its way up to your forehead as it turned slightly maniacal.
"Static, if y- *cough*"
You began to cough, the action interrupting your next words as blood began to leave your mouth with every cough.
"Y/N?!"
"What's going o"-
Static watched as you collapsed to the ground, your head banging against the floor as you did so. A black liquid began to flow down your nose while your body began to violently shake.
"Y/N!"
"Call Constantine"
"I- I- alre- try"
"He's not answering?"
"She said bef- watch- couldn't- in co- act wi- im"
Although her voice was raspy, Canary tried to make herself as coherent as possible for the man on the other end.
She was also keeping her eyes on the road, as she was driving at very high speeds in a vehicle that could very easily spin out of control if not handled properly.
The Batmobile.
Zatanna, who was in the passenger seat of said vehicle, had stopped shaking. And the black liquid that was leaking from her nose had stopped.
"I'll get into contact with Fate, since this seems to be something that the magic users might know about"-
"Bats"
Canary stopped driving, and the man in the cowl could see that from the GPS he had on the very expensive vehicle.
"Canary?"
She didn't respond, her eyes steeling as she looked through the windows on the bat themed car.
Highlighted by the sky that was painted pink in sunrise, were figures.
Numerous people blocked the road in front of the Batmobile, so much so that it looked like an entire crowd had gathered. Each member had their face painted white, and decorations on said paint that made them look similar to clowns.
Canary looked in the seat behind her, and saw that another crowd had seemingly appeared out of thin air. This time each one of them had a bag over their heads that resembled a scarecrow.
She was trapped.
"Bats how does the eject button wo"-
"We already know what you're thinking, and if you eject yourself out well......"
Canary looked up to the rooftops surrounding either side of her, and saw even more shadows lining the edges of them.
This time, every single individual that was peering down at the armoured vehicle, was wearing a mask reminiscent of a bird, the eyeholes of them seemingly glowing a golden yellow, which did nothing but amplify the pressure of their gazes.
"We've been waiting for you Batman"
Canary turned her attention to the voice, which came from a device being held in the hands of one of the clown-themed people in front of you.
"Although I'm surprised you showed up this early, I'm grateful all the same. Now I know these men won't be enough to beat you, but if you've truly come out then you'll be committed enough to keep going despite your injuries"
"Ahl Ghul"
Batman's voice reached Canary, and the second she heard that name the feeling of dread she felt before amplified.
'They have every exit blocked. I can't just run them over either because they'll die. Fuck what do I do?'
"Or, you can come out and accept your fate. Although I know you wouldn't do th"-
Canary opened the door of the Batmobile and stepped outside, her hands in the air as she did so.
There was only silence on the other end of the device, before the voice spoke again, this time venom in his tone.
"What is Black Canary doing here and where is Batman"
It wasn't a question, but a statement. One that Ahl Ghul seemed very keen on getting answered.
"6 more seconds"
Batman's voice came from the car, but only far enough so that Canary could hear.
"Answer the question"
"3 more seconds"
"So be it. Kill her"-
A grunt. That's what interrupted the leader of the League of Assassins.
Then another grunt. And a third one. Then a hell of pain. Then another.
Canary turned her head to where the sounds were originating from, behind her.
More yells were followed by gunfire, and the sound of bodies hitting the floor seemed to go by even quicker as multiple figures burst forward through the horde of bodies, each coming into view.
"So basically, you punch people with shadows?!"
"That's the simplified version, it's much more complicated than tha"-
"So you have the powers of an edgelord?"
"Did you just compare the ability to manipulate"-
"Dear god I'm working with an edgelord. How far has Gotham fallen"
"And what's your power, a taser?"
"Have you ever been hit by one before? We'll see if you're still laughing after"-
"Guys! Team bonding is great and all but we should be focusing on- Canary!"
"Barb- B-....Batgirl?"
Canary barely managed to croak out the female Heroes name, which caused Batgirl to sprint over to her friend.
She instantly put Canary's arm around her shoulder, just as the tired Hero calloused into her.
"You're not ok, get back in the car"
"I can still"-
"Dinah, please stop. You like you've been through hell and I'm guessing you've exhausted your Cry"
Canary looked down, her eyes foggy as she had yet to agree or disagree with her friend. She could faintly hear the voices of two others bickering outside of the car, but she focused back on her friend.
"Za....t- na"-
"We'll look after her, so trust me"
Canary looked up at Batgirl, the fogginess in her eyes expanding as she nodded, before allowing herself to be placed back inside the armoured vehicle.
"Speaker: Batgirl requesting lockdown mode"
"Request granted. Lockdown mode initiating"
A robotic voice came from the panel holding many different buttons and switches inside the Batmobile, and instantly after a protective layer of glass came up and blocked the windows, while the car seemingly condensed a little.
"This is a pity. We were hoping it would finally begin"
All of the masked figures that littered the edges of the rooftops moved out of view, vanishing as if they were never there.
"There's no point in wasting so much manpower on the likes of you. It's such a shame Hero's as pathetic as you show up when I'm expecting the best one of them all"
"Ahl Ghul?!"
"Batgirl, a pleasure to see you again, but I'm afraid I don't have time to waste on the likes of you"
A beep came from the device, before the figure holding it crushed it in their hands, causing the device to break into multiple pieces.
"First we have to run across all of Gotham"
Batgirl felt a vein on her face bulge.
"Then I find out my friends are seriously hurt"
"Oh no"
"Gotta say, I feel bad for the suckers. But I can't let her have all the fun now can I?"
Bluebird walked up beside the shaking Batgirl, who looked like she was ready to explode.
"AND I'M NOT EVEN WORTH YOUR TIME?!"
Immediately taking out multiple batarangs, she threw a few behind and in front of her, which broke the guns in some of the figures' hands.
That's when the brawl officially started.
'My head'
Those were the only words you could think of as you regained your consciousness, your eyes still closed as thoughts began to run rampant throughout your mind. Darkness being the only thing that you could see.
'Why did I collapse?'
'What's going on?'
'Why can't I hear anything?'
'Why can't I open my eyes?'
'Am I dreaming?'
'Am I back in that place?'
'What's going on?'
'Everything feels weird'
'Who's watching me?
'Is someone watching me?'
'I'm gonna die'
'Stop looking at me
'Am I floating?'
'Their gaze'
'I'm dying'
'Everything's bending'
'Stop looking at me'
'Future does not exist'
'Stop looking at me'
'Who am I?'
'World is dying'
'Someone'
'What's going on'
'Am I dreaming?'
'Who are you?'
'Stop looking at me'
'Am I dreaming?'
'Am I floating?'
'Why are you watching me?'
'Multiverse is dying'
'I'm dying'
'Stop looking at me'
'Am I dreaming?'
'Stop looking at me'
'STOP LOOKING AT ME'
"I am sorry"
'W-What's going on. Why can't I see?'
"You are under my eye. Your body isn't allowing you to see because you cannot comprehend me. Your mind would break"
'Why am I here'
"I could sense a disturbance in my tether of reality. Two in fact. There's not a lot of things that can surprise me, and this awoke a curiosity I had long forgotten"
'What are you talking about'
"You.........are not from here, are you?"
"Ah, I see now"
'Who are you?"
"Who am I? Well, I guess you could say I'm everything here. But, not truly everything"
'Stop with the riddles'
"Alright I've had my fun. It's been a while since I talked to someone, a few millennia in fact"
"I'm called many names. But, if you're where I think you're from, you'll know me as"
The
Presence
Your body attempted to instinctively sit up from your laying down position, but metal bonds came out of the sides of the patient bed you were in and wrapped around you, pinning you to the mattress.
You began to squirm, your mind breaking into a panic as the feeling of being trapped began to worm its way into your mind.
"Y/N"
Your squirming slowed in intensity, but didn't stop.
"Y/N can you hear me, it's Static"
Finally, your struggle ceased as you forced your body to calm down.
"I'm going to let go of the binds now ok? You're not in danger, we're in a room until he Asylum"
You nodded your head, your eyes still not open but you recognized the voice of Static.
You felt the straps around you retract itself, and the feeling of freedom overwhelmed the previous anxiety you were feeling.
But that feeling was replaced with pain, as the injuries you had suffered seem to hit you all at once.
Your hand made its way to your head as you voiced a question to Static.
"How long have I been out"
"10 minutes. Doc's getting some supplies to tre-.....tre-......to treat u"-
The Hero went limp, which caused his body to crumple to the ground.
You were about to get out of your bed to help him but a voice cut you off before you could.
"What you need more than anything right now is to refrain from physical movement. From what I can gather he used to much of his powers, and his body needs rest to recover itself"
Hugo walked into the room carrying a tray with numerous medical supplies.
"Not to mention the injuries he suffered against.....Deathstroke.....still aren't completely healed"
Placing the tray on a nearby table, Hugo lifted Static off the ground and put the Hero's arm around his shoulder, and then dragged him to a nearby bed before laying him on it.
"You haven't recovered either. But the physical damage you both suffered, while extreme, can be recovered to at least the condition you were in a few hours ago with the right care before the auction. But that's not what I'm worried about you see"
The sigh of relief you were about to exhale stopped as Hugo continued, pulling up a chair so that he was in between both yours and Static's bed.
"I worked at Arkham L/N. Arkham Asylum. And I was the best of the best. A man who could decipher a person after just one conversation with them"
You didn't like where this was going. It had already been a long night? morning? and the last person you wanted questioning you was Hugo Strange.
"After a while in this craft, some of us gain an ability. It's not a power, it's not something like super strength, but an inherent ability that allows us to tell when someone is mentally troubled or unstable just by looking at their eyes"
He leaned back in his chair, his eyes never leaving yours as in your mind they seemingly grew larger and larger.
"I already know you're hiding
