"Deep in the forest a call was sounding, and as often as he heard this call, mysteriously thrilling and luring, he felt compelled to turn his back upon the fire and the beaten earth around it, and to plunge into the forest..."
― The Call of the Wild

John Griffith Chaney was an American author born in 1876. He chose the name "Jack" for himself as a boy, and since his father was never part of his life, Jack took on his step father's surname, London. London was well known for being a novelist, journalist, and social activist. The Call of the Wild and White Fang are two of his most famous literary works. Both novels are set in the Yukon, Canada during the Klondike Gold Rush.

The Call of the Wild is considered an animal fiction, in which an animal is anthropomorphized, and given human traits. It follows a domesticated dog named Buck, who's stolen from his home and sold as a sled dog in Alaska. Buck becomes progressively primitive and wild in the harsh environment, where he is forced to fight to survive and dominate other dogs. By the end of the story, Buck abandons civilization, and relies on his primordial instincts and learned experience to emerge as a leader in the wild.
