Prologue: six months from now

Our legs dangled over the edge of the sky-high treehouse, the sunset sparking us up like candles illuminating our city. I always needed to be closer, so I leaned my head on his shoulder, and he set his cheek on my hair. Perfect and warm, just like him.

When the sun disappeared, the light lingered, making us glow. With him, the light could never leave. No twilight ever stood a chance.

In the end, our words were perfect promises along the summer breeze and the backs of gull's wings.

"You know I love you, right? I always did. I always will."

"I know."

Part One

If you need to know one thing about Greyson Scott, his heart was tender from a young age. Whether it was soothing me after a fall or wishing his parents weren't so unhappy, it never took much to bring him to tears. Some thought it a weakness, like a perpetually bleeding wound or a fractured bone that would not heal right. I knew better, of course.

If you need to know one thing about me, my heart was equally as tender.
