"So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God"

Back home, your mom had always been a fan of big dinner parties - the kind where the living room would fill to the brim with pretty women gossiping and whispering about all sorts of delightful things and the back patio would be stacked with men smoking cigars and talking about work, their wives, and the likes. Your mother called herself an old soul - but you liked to call her an uppity bitch. Either way, the terms were interchangeable. Your father was insistent that she wasn't as bad as you made her out to be. In reality, he was right. However, the throws of teenage angst was absolutely overwhelming. Simply put, neither you nor your mother were inherently bad people - just different. However, you were convinced she was inherently bad.

"Are you coming down?" Your mother knocked on your room door - the one you shared with your two siblings. The apartment you shared with your family was startlingly small - much smaller than the ones in America. Your father's job had only covered a two bedroom. Since he didn't plan on staying here longer than a year, he had opted to take the all-expenses paid two bedroom. For his job, you sacrificed comfort. Despite the lack of privacy, there was something exhilarating about being so close to the action - smack dab in the middle of the investigation.

"No, I don't plan on it"

You could feel your mother's frown through the door.

"Your siblings are downstairs at the table right now, brushing up on their conversational Japanese with the Chief of Police and you're upstairs sulking. Come on down, it'll make your father look good"

Your mother could feel your frown seeping through the door. It wasn't that you weren't interested in meeting high-ranking officials, it was more that you weren't interested in being crammed at a small table.

"Ray Penber is downstairs with his fiance - I think her name is -"

"Naomi Misora" You interrupted. It wasn't uncommon of you to be aware of who was who in your father's inner circle. In fact, it was common. Your nosiness was often mistook for intelligence. It wasn't that you found yourself above average - it was simply that you knew who was who. Connections were the only way to survive. "I'm not interested in playing politics. I know pretty well that they're here for pleasantries. Why would they talk about highly-classified information in a small house with three kids?"

"It's not any of your business to know a lick of that information" Your mother spit back, her arms folded over her chest. "You're in your last year of school - you're only seventeen. Why don't you enjoy life instead of brood over your father's cases?"

Your frown deepened. Is that how you were seen? As brooding? Your mother hadn't intended for it to be an insult but that's how you construed it - as an insult. Perhaps your fatal flaw was an intense draw to the morbid and obscene. You didn't really have a penchant for justice - justice was fleeting and oftentimes idealistic. You had a thirst for knowledge. Simply knowing who killers were and how they got away with their murders was enough for you. Sure, you could get into the semantics of whether or not KIRA was playing God - but everyone was constantly arguing about that. Why bother playing philosopher when there was no point? The law simply states that murder is illegal - there would be punishment for KIRA when, not if, he was caught. But what fascinated you more was the process of unraveling a murderer - getting into his mind and swimming in it.

If you had told your mom about your interests, she'd probably put you into intensive therapy.

"It's not brooding" You responded.

"One of your fellow classmates is downstairs, too" Your mother said from behind the door, "He's the chief's son. You probably know him - Light Yagami?"

Every muscle in your body tensed.

"I'll be downstairs shortly"

Everyone was huddled around the table, politely passing the food back and forth to place on their plates. Your plate remained close to empty. There was something about sitting in the presence of Light Yagami that felt unsettling and made you lose your appetite. It was like sitting in the presence of evil - but even that much didn't make sense. What could be so bad about a seventeen year old? He was pretentious, sure - but nothing more than that. But who would believe you if you were to tell them that? Especially given that he was he Police Chief's son.

"My son tells me you two share a few of the same classes"

Soichiro Yagami. Chief of Police. Light Yagami's dad. Married to Sachiko Yagami. The only kid that they have together that I know of is Light.

"We do" You responded dryly. You could feel your mother's lips curl tightly at your dry tone; you could just tell that she felt as though it was disrespectful. Quickly, you corrected yourself. "Pleased to meet you, Chief of Police, Yagami-San"

Both your mother and father let out a sigh of relief.

"You're very polite!" Sochiro Yagami smiled at you, "You're nothing short of the delight my son described you to be!"

Your eyes shifted over to Light Yagami for the first time that night, gaze landing on your classmate. He was giving you a friendly smile - but his eyes made it feel like he was condescending on you. You were tempted to snap at him for giving you such an ugly look, but with how friendly he seemed - you didn't think it'd do any good. In fact, it'd probably just cause a rift and for your father to potentially lose his position with the FBI. After all, your daughter insulting the son of Japan's Chief of Police wasn't very good press.

"Is that so?"

"Yes! He was also talking about how well your Japanese was coming along - almost as if you're a native speaker! Your speech seems a bit rough in areas, but you're speaking very well for someone who is new to the country" It wasn't met as a jab, but more as an honest compliment.

"Thank you" You broke your staring contest with Light to focus your attention back to his father.

The conversation over dinner seemed quite lovely, if you one was interested in conversation. After your father had formally introduced Raye Penber to The Chief of Police, he had quickly discovered that the two had already met.

"This isn't my first time meeting with Penber and his lovely fiance. Misora-San had been formerly assigned to work with us on finding another serial-killer ten years ago... however, the one that we apprehended was not one nearly as complicated as this current one..."

Silence took over the table and suddenly, everyone seemed stiff.

"It seems to me that there is some business that needs to be attended to" Light Yagami finally uttered his first words after his extended silence. Light directed his attention to your father. "If it's alright by you, I would be honored to show my classmate, your daughter, and her younger siblings around the area and treat them to something sweet - as a thank you for putting a pause in their life so that you can come help my father apprehend KIRA. This might allow you privacy to talk about KIRA, your next plans, and work without worrying about exposing your children, or myself, to too much"

Your father paused for a second. He wasn't a trusting man by nature. As nice as Light Yagami seemed, he always second-guessed everyone. However, Light Yagami and his smile was incredibly charming - not to mention that he was the son to The Chief of Police. What could possibly be the worst repercussions of allowing Sochiro Yagami's son to show them around? Food poisoning, perhaps.

"That's fine by me" Your father nodded. "Just have them back in two hours. They have school in the morning - yourself included"

Light Yagami nodded before standing up, your younger siblings bouncing upwards in excitement at the promise of something sweet to eat.

For a moment, you locked gazes with Light Yagami before letting out a small sigh.

You might be the subject of a few vicious rumors from classmates, male and female alike, for going out on a school night with Light Yagami with your siblings - but you couldn't really imagine anything worse beyond a few rumors about your dating life circulating.
