I knew the moment I woke, that I wasn’t alone. Keeping my eyes closed, I let my visitor’s aura wash over me, cringing when a heavy blanket of disgust slid across my bed, before settling against my body.

“I know you’re awake,” a voice accused, and I recognized Thomas. “We need to talk, but you need to listen.” A light rustling preceded him and then my bed sagged when he lowered himself onto it.

“How did you know?” I asked, jolting upright and scooting backwards against the headboard, my eyes widened. I didn’t want him touching me, his aura was bad enough.

“Know what?” His thick brows pulled together.

“You said you could see them, but you knew what they’d said to me.” He had repeated what they’d said. They’re right, you are his, forever.

Glancing down at his lap, he clasped his hands together so tightly, the skin on his fingers began turning white. Sweat popped out on his forehead and his lips moved like he was talking, but no sound came out. Veins bulged in his neck, tears filled his eyes, and I wondered if he was going to die right there on the foot of my bed.

“I can’t,” he rasped. “They’re everywhere right now - your room is full of them. They’ve cloaked us both in their vile shadows.”

Without moving, I glanced around the room, but didn’t see anything, or anyone, other than him.

“I thought that was you,” I observed lightly, still not completely sure he was trustworthy.

Then, a bright wave of pure white swept into the room, rolling across Thomas before blasting me, slicking my hair back from sheer force. Like a gale force wind, it chased the darkness away, shadows retreating to the farthest corners of my room.

“That -” he huffed and cleared his throat. “That was me.” I opened my mouth, a thousand questions about to roll off my tongue when he held his hand up to quiet me. “Not now,” he repeated. “I will tell you everything, but first we must shield you from them.”

“Who are you?” I demanded, shoving the covers from my body, and leaping from the bed. I made sure to keep my eyes on him as I began to pace the sterile tile floor.

“Are they quiet?” he asked, instead of answering my question. “Can you hear them now?”

Frowning, I tilted my head, surprised when I realized I didn’t hear anything. Jerking my eyes back to his, I shook my head. He’d quieted them.

“How?” I asked.

“You should be more concerned about what I am, rather than whom.”

Fear seized my lungs and I backed into the corner.

“No, I’m not a demon.” He lunged from his perch and stalked toward me. My heart hammered so hard, I feared it would explode. “Do I look like one of them to you?” he demanded, his face contorting into angry lines.

Right now? Yes.

But, I’m smart enough not to say that out loud. My heartbeat ticks the seconds by as we stand face-to-face, me wondering just who the hell he is, and he presumably reminding himself that we’re in a nuthouse. Having a sane conversation with anyone here would be a miracle. As we stood facing one another, I watched his eyes roam over my body, starting with my hair and ending on the floor with my feet. He inhaled heavily and slowly released his breath.

“I’m sorry,” he murmurs. “Please, forgive me. It’s been so long since I inhabited a physical host.” When his eyes came back to mine, a silver sheen washed over the surface of his, the entirety of his whole eye shimmering like a diamond caught in sunlight.

“We’ve actually spoke before,” he says, offering me his open palm. “We’ve spoken many times. Please, take my hand, I’ll answer all your questions, you have my word.”

Suddenly realization dawned like someone flipped the switch in my brain. Taking in his disheveled appearance, I couldn’t believe I hadn’t noticed it sooner.

“You’re the Seraphim.” The words sound like an accusation. “You’re the one the demons always torture.”

Releasing my hand, Thomas folds his tall, lanky body into a gentlemanly bow, before sweeping his arm back to encompass my empty bed.

“It’s nice to finally meet you Penny, please, sit, and let us talk.”
