The next day was like any other, everyone was walking around town, people walking to their jobs, and people who were off were buying things they needed. Today, Jane Holliday was starting her first day at her new job, and couldn't wait to get there. Unionville is her new home, a new start you could say for someone who is turning her life around for the better. She didn't really ask Jonathan why he was helping her out or how she got home from the hospital. She couldn't remember how she got home because of the medicine she was given to help her rest nor how she changed into her pajamas.

"Good morning, Jane. How are you this morning?"

The voice was familiar, but couldn't tell who it was at first because she was still dizzy from all that medicine. Nevertheless, she sat up, looked around, and looked in the direction the voice came from.

"Hello, John. I am fine. Were you the one who brought me home and put me in my pajamas?"

"Yes and no. I brought you home, but Debbie, my secretary and your assistant, put you in your pajamas. I am in charge of your care and health, doctor's orders."

"If the doctor ordered it, I guess it's OK, and thank you for all your help. Did the doctor say when I could start working for you."

"Yes, he did he said you can start working tomorrow and this apartment we are in now is yours for as long as you want. I would like to take you to dinner, a movie, and than back here for a night cap."

"You mean a date. Yes, I would love to. Thank you."

"You're welcome. I'll pick you up at 7 PM, we'll go to an early dinner, to the movies afterwards and then dancing. When we're dancing, we'll decided what to do next, OK?"

"OK, see you at 7 PM. Thank you for all your help, you are a wonderful person."

7 p.m. came and went, no sign of Jonathan. Jane was both worried and upset, because he hasn't arrived or telephoned also the military has returned to question all the people in the town. Some people, those who questioned, never returned from the questioning and it has many people afraid of what's going on. Sheriff Jackson has no idea what's going on and can't get a reply from the head of the troop that is marching through the town every minute tormenting the town folk.

8 PM, no sign of Jonathan, and Jane is very upset. She has telephoned John's office and home, he wasn't in either place. John's secretary said that he left at 6:30 and should have been there by now, it's a mystery to both about John's whereabouts. Jane got off the telephone with the secretary and called Sheriff Jackson's office to ask him to help find Jonathan.

"Jane, I'll do what I can, but a dozen of the townspeople have disappeared and I think the military has something to do with it. I'll get in touch with you as soon as I find out, OK?"

"OK, thank you Sheriff Jackson. I was supposed to go out with John tonight and his secretary told me that he should have been at my apartment to pick me up at 7 PM and that was over an hour ago."

There was silence on the other end for over five minutes and Jane was wondering what was happening. Sheriff Jackson came back on the telephone and told her that John has just stumbled into his office and was laying down on the couch relaxing from some unknown ordeal. John looked like was in a fight with the entire military troop that is here and won half the fight.

Fifteen minutes later, Jane appeared in Sheriff Jackson's office to see John and check that he was all right. She was shocked to see him in such a condition that she wished he were better so they could still go out, but she knew that wishing sometimes never helps. She put an arm around John and helped him back to her place, letting him sleep on the couch. John was so tired from his ordeal that as soon as Jane put him on the couch, he was out like a light and she called the doctor to come take a look at him.

The doctor arrived about an hour later, thank to being delayed by the military that was stopping everyone who happened to pass by them. He looked at John and was amazed he was still alive, especially after looking like he was through a war. The doctor treated him, told him to stay on the couch for awhile and not to move for at least two days. The doctor checked on Jane, too, making sure she was still in good health, and she was.
