Chapter 15 | the game

The field wasn't far away. Even though I had gotten a thorough tour of the campus, we never came to this space of grass. Since the entire college was partly surrounded by woods, big areas were bound to be there.

The small field had soccer goal posts, some lights for the night, and a basketball hoop in the end. We walked past the cafe, where the small number of students made me wonder what they all were doing.

When we reached the back, we saw the field. Brady and Austin stood on both sides, perhaps starting a new game. Rebecca stood in the center, acting as the referee. She had the soccer ball in her hands.

There were those other 3 people too, sitting on the sides. The ones that had come along with Brady when I had been playing the piano. I blinked once at them and averted my eyes. They didn't seem to be doing the introducing, why would I?

I crossed my hands across my chest and laid back on the tree. Izzy did the same next to me.

No one had noticed us, except the curly haired boy with the three guys. He seemed to be a year older than me. Though his calm and boyish aura made him feel younger than me.

He looked at me for a while, then turned to the pink haired girl. When he whispered something to her, her gaze went straight to me. She raised her eyebrows across the field.

And then looked away with a twisting mouth. She didn't bother me with another glance. I rolled my eyes. Definitely the bitchy girlfriend.

Rebecca had her back to me as she whistled and the two boys ran to the ball she had dropped.

Just then, Austin noticed me. His eyes went while running. His eyes were on mine. I wanted to scream at him to keep his eyes on the ball. But he didn't take his green orbs away from mine.

And.... almost tripped.

That loss of footing seemed to jolt him back to the game.

However, Brady had already captured the ball. His dark brown hair ruffled in the wind. They were so dark, they looked black indoors. In the sun though, I could tell they were a darker shade of brown itself.

His features were now so different from Austin, I wondered how the fuck they were twins.

Brady laughed at Austin.

" You lovesick fool. And you thought you could win." he yelled.

Again, those butterflies appeared at the sound of his voice. Again. His eyes turned towards mine, and those blue ocean's met my emerald ones.

His gaze didn't stay for long though, it was just a small glance of acknowledgement. I felt that irritation once again. What did I want him to do though?

I was being so stupid.

Austin bared his teeth at his brother.

" She's my good luck charm. Don't worry, now I will definitely win." he said, way too confidently. I laughed softly into the air. Austin grinned at me. I shook my head at him.

He was never going to win, whether I was here or not. Brady was too good. I'd seen him play since elementary school. Secretly, of course.

Brady's body moved through the field, his feet controlling the soccer ball as if it was meant to do that. He didn't look like the guy who hadn't played for years. I couldn't keep my eyes off him, no matter how much I tried. Even bubbly Izzy had gone quiet, all of us taking in the sight of him. I bet she wasn't feeling the butterflies, sparkles or tingles. I bet she didn't get airy sensations, goosebumps or chills.

That was me. Only Me.

Turned out I was right. Brady won the game. By the end, both of them were sweating. It would have been so hard, to play only with one player. They both had been in soccer teams previously. Though the sport was pretty underrated, they weren't. That was highschool though. I didn't want to think about that.

Rebecca ran up to me the moment the game finished.

" Hey. I'm sorry I didn't tell you, Austin dragged me as soon as he saw me in the cafe" she said a bit guiltily.

" It's fine." I said. I felt Isabelle's stare behind my head as soon as I said that.

" Yeah. She was way fine." she muttered. I gave her a small glower. She gave it back to me. But there was reassurance in her eyes. She wouldn't tell anyone.

Brady and Austin were with the 3 people at the edge of the field. I wondered if we were supposed to join them. Then, Izzy grabbed my hand, just like she had at the party, and led me to them all.

Austin grabbed me as soon as we got there. He dramatically cried on my shoulder. I was unsure of what to do, so I just awkwardly patted his back.

" Oh sweetheart, your charm didn't work! What have you done? Why did you not work your magic on me?" he whined. I laughed.

" I'm pretty sure her magic caused you to lose." I heard Brady mumble beside me.

I looked at him. His blue eyes were now close enough for me to see sparkle in them. They looked brighter than they had been. I realized just then how dull they were when I had met him here. Although they were always enchanting, that music room Brady hadn't had any joy in his eyes. I guess soccer had really helped him. He felt even more alive now. My insides flipped. It caused me happiness. I pressed the feeling down.

YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT HIM NO MORE.

Screaming at myself was pathetic. But I couldn't help but do it. I had to stop it. I swear I had to.

I learnt that the pink haired girl was named Charli. Her makeup was so good that I couldn't help but appreciate it. Rebecca gave me that look. I blinked twice. Then realized that she was indeed the bitchy girlfriend. Wow. My guess was so perfect.

The next introduction surprised me though. The curly haired guy was Asher. He smiled at me and snuck a hand across Charli's waist. He seemed too innocent and good for her scorpion tongue. I heard it very soon.

" So you are the girl Austin just fell for. Now I know for sure how soon he'll throw you away." She scoffed, " Garbage." Asher shoved her lightly,

" Stop it" I heard him whisper. But my rage was building up already. My smile disappeared and a cold expression took over. I know how to do that right back.

" Yes, and I know that if your cute boyfriend leaves you, It would be no surprise to anyone." I scoffed, mimicking her, "Garbage"

She looked astonished for a moment. All who were present stared at me astonishingly. Even Austin lifted his head from my shoulder and stared at me with wide eyes.

Charli bared her teeth. She looked like she was about to pounce on me. I smiled coldly. I know to bare my teeth too, dear.

Asher pulled her back and whispered things into her ear. I couldn't care less. When she seemed to simmer down, she gave me a glare, flipped her hair and sashayed away. Such a snobby girl.

When she disappeared, everyone looked at me. They started laughing. Even Brady laughed. I tried to hold it in, but nonetheless, a smile slipped out. I shrugged,

" Hey! I wasn't going to let her talk to me like that." I said defensively. Asher laughed and shook his head,

" She's just like that. Don't take any of it to heart." he said, giving me an apologetic smile.

" Eh, It's fine. I don't care anyway. But how did you end up in that spider's web?" I asked him.

" I swear, she has a good heart. I love her. She's just...uses her tongue to solve her problems. Her scorpion tongue." Asher responded. He had that dreamlike look on his face. Yeah, he sure was in love. I nodded slowly.

Just then, Rebecca suddenly said,

" Hey. Let's get some coffee together. The cafe has no one in it. And, since that bi-" she started.

" Don't finish that." Asher said. She became quiet and rolled her eyes.

" Whatever. Let's go. And you are coming." she pointed to me.

" Of course I am." I muttered. Austin laughed and his light green eyes brightened. I smiled and laughed with him.

We all started walking across the field to the cafe, when an arm stopped me. The other's walked ahead, oblivious of anything.

My skin sparked. I turned around to find Brady's dark blue eyes staring at me. His hand stayed on my upper hand for a minute more. The skin burned there.

He had never touched me before. And the sensations I felt now were undeniably close to lust. The sun kissed his skin, and his hair breezing to the melody of the wind.  His body was close to mine, his black hair falling forward. His heat started to seep into mine. Abruptly, he pushed a bit further away from me. His hand didn't leave mine though.

He looked worn out, but my god he was hot. I wondered if he knew what was going on in me. Of course not. Why would he?

I wanted to sigh. His hand left my skin. I didn't know if it was just me, or as he dropped his hand, a fist formed. And opened. Flexing, as if he wanted to get my trace off his hand.

" Can I talk to you for a minute?"
