unfounded

That list of hers saved her from any more heavy making out. Her guy looked positively sicken. He went all brooding beau over that damn list and forgot everything else.

Seven of them. All decent numbers, four above ninety. Julian was number three at ninety-three percent. Some alien named Danoko came in at ninety but the one really bothering Kell was the guy who was just below him. Frick at ninety-five.

Her poor hon was fit to be tied.

Silent. Staring at the numbers as if he could change them with sure will.

She didn't see what the problem was. Sure, there was a lot of them and, sure those were pretty nice numbers by his standards, but all that really meant is that she'd have a lot in common with all of them.

The fifth guy was super-hot, almost as nice looking as Alric. The sixth and seventh were both humans. Shaggy haired. Both looked like they knew how to rock.

Yeah, they both looked more her type then Kell any day of the week. "I told you that any test that said Julian and I weren't a match had to be wrong. Is he the real reason you're so bugged out?"

"I will not lie; I would rather his name not be on the list. I would also rather him keep his hands to himself. No one has the right to keep you from me."

"He was on your side. He was just worried I was going to break your nose. It did cross my mind then I remembered how hard your face is."

"It matters not. No one is to come between mates. For any reason."

"So, he is the reason you're so upset?"

"My future King, there is one who is missing from the list. He arrived last night and is still being process. I will bring up his picture now. His numbers would put him just above the Human Julian."

Kellum's eyes narrowed on her. "Is there anyone you are not a match for?"

The new dude was causing a pitter patter in her chest area. Dark hair, green eyes that held some mystery. Some mischief. The boy was a troublemaker. She shrugged, spending time with that hunk wouldn't be too much of a trial.

"Your numbers are most impressive, Human Jessalynn."

"Thanks, Dez. I guess."

"Dezrick, how many of those are like Frick?" Kellum asked.

"Only him. Most of these have quite a bit of matches. All with higher numbers than hers. Except the new human. He has two matches and the human Jessalynn is ahead. Cornora has a one-point difference."

His eyes narrowed on her.

"Like Frick? What is wrong with Frick?"

He waved his hand, and the screens went away. "He has no matches. Out of all my people twenty-four have no matches."

"Twenty-two now, my future king. Frick now has one and so does Aneata. He arrived last night as well. Their numbers are not impressive but acceptable."

"Cause for celebration."

Except for he didn't sound like he would be celebrating anything.

So that was the cause for his mood. "Are you worried that I will be a mate for him or that I won't?"

"Normally I would be worried about the first and feel guilty about the second but as I keep reminding you, you are mine. That does not stop the guilt though."

Her boy toy was still so native. It wasn't just simple guilt. There was some fear laced in there as well. "It would be normal to have some worries."

"I keep remembering you telling him that he is more your type." He admitted.

"That's what you get for listening in on people's conversations." She was sitting on his counter, his only furniture right now and motioned him to her.

Somehow, he managed to look pleased and reluctant at her request.

"Poor, baby." Jess pinched his chest as hard as she could. "Stop pouting."

She chuckled at his look. "Now, run along and fetch the prick."

"Why?"

"If he's the one you're worried about, we'll fix this up quick. Run along. Dez, bring out a table and some chairs."

Frick. He was nearly as tall as Kell. Nearly but where Kellum was sleeker and powerful, Frick was built like a tank. He was good looking. His hair shorter and spiked. His eyes more a grey then a blue and held humor more times than not.

Kell was right. If you would have asked her a few weeks ago, she would have said her, and Frick had a lot more in common.

Hell, maybe they still did but that didn't matter. He wasn't the one she fell for.

Nuts. He would have been so much easier.

His eyes lit up when he saw her. Not because he was overly glad to see her but because he enjoyed picking on her as much as she enjoyed picking on him. Finally, noticing her appearance his eyes widen.

Crap, she'd forgotten her hair.

And has she mentioned wow? Dude looked good in his jeans and a red polo shirt. She felt like giving herself a pat on the back for getting these guys into some regular clothes.

"Wow, Jess. You look hot. Suppose this is what, 'you look like you have been rolling in the hay' means?"

Normally Kell wouldn't have thought much about his friend's comment but now he flinched.

That's why this had to be taken care of today. She didn't mind testing out the others so that she could buy some time for Hayden, but she wouldn't allow Kell to worry that there could be something between her and his friend.

Frick was Kell's Julian. Too important to let something come between them.

"My friend should be looking happier than he does. He told me about the list on the way over here. You are not already crushing on someone else, are you?

When he sat, she sat across from him. "There's some hot guys on my list but I'm not the problem. He is." She pointed at Kell. "Run along, babe and I'll take care of this."

Kellum came around the table and sat next to her. "That is not going to happen, and I must say, I am not very keen on that look in your eyes. Care to tell me what you are doing?"

"I'm going to ease your mind."

"How?"

She winked. "Hush up, honeybuns."

When she looked back at Frick, he was frowning. "What does any of this have to do with me?"

"You're on my list and hot cakes over here thinks that since I once mentioned I could be into you, that there might be some sparks."

"I am on... " He looked at Kellum for conformation and received a stiff nod.

He looked confused. A little sad then repulsed. "You think I want your mate? My future queen?"

"Don't call me that."

"She is the only match you have. I wish it was different. The numbers are_____."

"I do not care what the numbers are. It is more than obvious that she is yours."

Kellum gave a quick nod. "I agree."

Jess rose and walked around the table. "But... " She leaned in close enough he would feel her breath on the back of his neck. "He needs to see that for himself."

"Jessalynn."

"Hush, love dove. Just going to do a little experiment. See, when I'm this close to you breathing becomes difficult. My heart starts doing wild flips."

Every freaking time. Just by being close to him.

Frick went still.

"You smell nice. Woodsy." She watched his throat work and leaned in even closer.

"Jessalynn." His warning rose a degree.

"Don't worry about sweet lips over there and his narrowed eyes. Just concentrate on me."

"You want me to die today?"

"You want him to be worried that you want me? Close your eyes and tell me what you feel?"

"Mostly, sick to my stomach."

"Kell, sit down. I'm not even touching him."

Yet.

"I do not like it."

"What about you, Frick? Do you like me this close?"

"No. For one thing, I keep waiting for him to choke the life out of me."

"Is your stomach all warm and gooey?"

"Warm and gooey?"

"Want to kiss me?"

"Nope."

"Not even a little? Not even if I want you to?" She whispered the question against his neck.

There were no shivers. The tone of his voice never changed. His eyes were still more grey then blue, no fire. No desire.

Maybe that's why Kell was about to sit back down. He still didn't look happy but even he was able to see that there was nothing there. Frick wasn't reacting the way Kell would be.

Jess stopped looking at Prick and she looked across the table to Kellum.

He was the only one with that power over her. Even at this distance, just looking at him caused the warm swirls to come alive. So easily he turned her into a puddle at his feet.

Frick smelled good but that was it.

She could see her guy had gotten the point and she could have left it at that. She wanted this subject good and dead. Plus, what fun would that be?

Jess pressed her lips to his neck. Used her teeth just enough to get a reaction out of him.

Before she could laugh, before Kell could do whatever man stunt he was going to pull, her body clinched in pain and she hissed out and went to her knees.

Fuck. It was like a hot iron being pressed to her chest that eased into her gut. Fuck. It was even worse than it had been when she'd been kissing Johnny.

When she could finally concentrate on someone other than herself, she caught both Kell and Frick staring at her. Both pale and upset. Frick holding his upper arm. Kell looking close to dying.

If she thought they could take it, she would grab her upper arm and pretend to be marked, but she could tell wow eyes wouldn't be able to handle it. Plus, Frick looked like he was going to throw up any moment now.

"I'm okay. No mark."

Kellum couldn't even manage words.

"No mark, I swear it. Frick, did yours burn?"

"No but... what happen to you?"

"Not sure. Show me your mark."

He knelt so he could do just that. Upper arm. Three curvy lines, two dots. White. No burn mark, no heat. She showed him her upper arm. No marks. He took a deep breath.

Kell, she could see was going to need more proof. She took the hand Frick offered her and climbed off the floor.

What the freak? That was the second time that has happened. It couldn't be a coincident that both times she'd been around other boys. How long before Kellum realized it too?

The whole thing kind of made her wish she was sporting Frick's mark on her arm.

"You scared me, human. I thought for sure______."

"Yeah. I'm good. You?"

"Good."

She tried for a smile. "So, no sudden urges to back me up against the wall?"

"No, thank God." He sneaked a peak at Kellum then his eyes came back to rest on her. "Do not get me wrong, you are very pretty, and I can see where it would not be a chore to kiss you. I would just rather not, if it is all the same to you."

"What every girl longs to hear. What about you, Kell? Would you rather not?"

He looked a little green and more than a little pissed. "You look like you would rather strangle me."

"Dezrick?"

"The pain was real but gone now. The scan shows no abnormalities."

He was no longer on the other side of the table. "You kissed him."

She backed away slowly. She wasn't scared of him. No matter how much heat was coming from his eyes. She was backing away because he was hot. "I wouldn't call that a kiss. And it did prove a point, didn't it?"

His voice dropped a few degrees. "Do you think you are going to go around kissing everyone on that ridiculous list just to prove a point?"

"Of course, not. Just Frick. I didn't want you to be worried about him. Did it work?"

His eyes narrowed as he came closer. "Did not want to worry me? I was scared out of my mind at the thought of you belonging to him."

Lord, he was hot. Capitol H. Capitol O. Capitol T. She was still backing away but lord she couldn't wait for him to catch up with her. "You're upset with me." She pointed out.

"I believe I am. I have been very clear that you are not allow to kiss anyone but me."

"You have been very clear about that." She admitted joyfully. "More than a few times."

"I will see you later, Frick." With a flick of his wrist, Frick was gone.

"Didn't know you could do that."

"I did not either until today when I called you to me."

"You're not worried he's in the bottom of a hole somewhere?"

"Dezrick?"

"In his room."

Jess smiled. "Have you figured out what you're going to do to me once you've caught me?"

"I have a few things in mind."
