Andy isn’t in a better mood when I arrive at the hospital. There’s a box from the nearby doughnut shop and an iced coffee on her tray, but she still has a vacant look. Daniel stands up, motioning me to follow him out to the hall.
“She’s taking the news hard.”
“I can tell. What about you?”
He shrugs but his eyes give him away.
“It’s a perfectly natural response to be upset, Daniel. If I were in this situation, I’d be crying nonstop.”
“But you’re not.”
Thanks for pointing that out, Captain Obvious.
“I didn’t choose to get pregnant. I never said I want this baby either. Andy won’t let me give the baby up because she wants to be a godmother.”
“I don’t think you came here to fight.”
“I didn’t but I already had a bad morning and my hormones are out of control today.”

“What did you come here for then?”
I take a deep breath to calm myself down. There’s no reason I should be directing my anger at Daniel, even if he did jab at me.
“I was wondering if you wanted to help me pack up Andy’s things.”
“When?”
“I already grabbed some boxes from the hardware store and I was going to head over now.”
“Yeah. Let me go tell Andy.”
I grab his arm as he turns to reenter the room.
“Don’t tell her she’s fired yet. Just tell her your parents need you or something.”
“You want me to lie to her?”
“Yes.”
He pulls his arm away, walking into the hospital room. I stay out in the hallway, waiting for him to reemerge.
