I had given Lucian more than he bargained for. I shouldn’t have done it, but I had gotten caught up in him. I couldn’t have hated him more at the moment. Unfortunately, Ariella dragged me into a room with a bunch of vampires, including Seilauna, Sebastian, Hunter, and a few others I didn’t quite recognize. She planted me firmly in an arm chair and perched on the arm of Hunter’s recliner, which was right next to me.

Lucian walked in, his face set in stone. He spared a glance at me, and then sat on the opposite side of the room. I shook my head in amazement and looked up when Seilauna stood.

“We haven’t gotten any closer to finding a cure, and the hunters have obviously become more of a problem than we feared. They are now hunting humans that we are with. My guess to that is they want to rid of any potential vampires.” Seilauna gestured to me when she mentioned them hunting humans, and smiled. I smiled back, hoping it looked cheerful and not sad. “As most of you know, it is mandatory that we find a cure, not only in case it spreads more, but because my mate is at risk and thus so am I.” She continued and I found I was completely lost.

Seilauna amazed me though. Everything about her – her air, her stature, and her movements – practically overflowed with a type of strength and endless capability. She reminded meof a warrior almost. Someone raised their hand and Seilauna nodded, then sat once again next to Sebastian. I just barely caught the look he gave her, and I was in utter shock at how much the cold man I’d seen many a time before could be in love with her; his eyes were utterly filled with it. I looked away, kind of feeling like I was intruding on a personal moment, and caught Lucian looking at me in frustration.

The vampire that stood bowed courteously to me and I nodded. It seemed I was the only one who didn’t know him. “I am Dacre,” (pronounced Dah-kree) “It seems that the coven but fifty miles from here has taken out a hunter’s base and so their numbers are less than they used to be. Unfortunately, that does not solve our problem. It has been told there is one very close to here, and so we must seek it out and destroy it before they destroy us. Seilauna? What should be our plan?” He asked with respect in his tone, and sat back down. The female vamp I so admired did not rise this time though; she stayed where she was and thought for a moment.

“I’m not sure I can answer that one as of yet. We still have to find where it is and decide the best approach” Her face was completely crossed with thought. Suddenly Sebastian got really tense and looked like he was struggling against mutating or something. Seilauna was instantly straddling him, making him look into her eyes and uttering soothing words to him that were inaudible to my human ears. After about ten minutes he began relaxing again and she hugged him.

“We need to go. Sebastian can’t take much more than this.” Seilauna informed, and it wasn’t a “please excuse us” it was more like a “We’re leaving right now and I don’t care what you think.”

“Of course, my lady.” Dacre bowed to her and the other vampires in the room, excepting Hunter, bowed their heads as Seilauna and Sebastian exited. The room was full of quiet, frustrated vampires and I held myself back from jumping up and leaving. It was pretty tense in here.

“What’s going on?” I blurted, and instantly regretted it when all eyes were on me. Lucian snorted and got up to leave. Ariella shook her head slowly and sighed.

“Come on, Honey; we’ve got a lot to talk about.” She got up and walked over to me. I wasn’t quite sure if this was a good thing, but I took her arm and let her lead me to her room.

“Wow.” I said, as we walked in the door a little bit later. The entire walk from the meeting room to her bedroom had been silent, and awkwardly so. Ariella and Hunter’s room was decorated in pastel pink, champagne, and an extremely light brown. It looked warm and comforting, and kind of reminded me of a banana split.

“Sit.” She told me, and I did so. She began pacing back and forth and finally stopped. Ariella turned to me slowly with a complicated expression and sighed. “Seilauna. Seilauna is the head warrior, after an incident happened a little while ago. We have a very grave situation with the vampire hunters; they’re becoming more aware of our existence. Sebastian has a disease they created that drives vampires into frenzy, and it’s taken quite a toll on him. Seilauna takes care of him though; because she wouldn’t have it any other way.” She trailed off and I had a feeling this wasn’t the end of it.

“What did she mean when she said mate?” I asked in a sheepish voice.

“That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. For every vampire, there is a significant other, but it’s not like being married or being in love. It’s more than that. It’s almost like your souls recognize each other. There is a significant pull between the two and it’s hard to resist. They are the only person or vampire in the world that you are ever able to love, and if they die, you either become a lifeless shell, or die along with them. Hunter is my mate, and Sebastian is Seilauna’s. I also have reason to believe that…” She trailed off and gave me a nervous glance.

“What?” I asked, scared of what the answer might be.

“I have reason to believe that you are… Lucian’s mate.” She said quietly and I just looked at her, completely dumbfounded.

“I don’t… no… no! I refuse to love that asshole!” with each word my voice grew louder and Ariella winced as I screamed.

“Noelle, please. Without you, he can easily die. This isn’t any easier for him than it is for you. He’s going through this too. I’m sure that he will-.” I cut her off.

“No! I don’t care about his male pride and I don’t care if he dies. I want him to die! Just disappear off the face of the Earth so I never have to see his gorgeous ass again.” I screamed and realized I had called him gorgeous. I let my breath out in a hiss. He probably had known all along that I was his ‘mate’ and didn’t say anything so he could toy with me. “I’m going to talk to him.” I said in a venomous tone. Ariella began to protest, knowing it wouldn’t end well, but I glared at her and she actually took a few steps back.

I got up off of the comfortable couch I’d been sitting on and walked out. I figured my way back to the hall I’d found Lucian’s room in, recalling the path clearly. It had been only one hall over from mine so it was simple to find. I didn’t waste time on opening the door, and just flung it open with my mind. I stormed in and Lucian walked out of the bathroom with nothing but a towel wrapped around his lower half.

“What the…?” He said at the look on my face and I walked right up and slapped his beautiful face. Lucian lost his balance out of sheer surprise, but when I tried to slap him again, he caught my wrist.

“You’re such an asshole! I can’t believe I had sex with you! I hate you, do you understand that? There is no way in hell I am going to be your mate.” I yelled in his face and he just sat there looking blankly at me.

“Slow down bull’s-eye,” He began and I struggled against his grip on my wrist so I could hit him again. By now, he had grabbed my other wrist too. “You can’t hate me. I’m your mate, and this is as new to me as it is to you. You think I’m enjoying this?” He asked and I glared at him.

“Wanna bet I can’t hate you? Cause right now that’s the only feeling I have towards you.” I hissed and he pulled back a little. “I gave my virginity to the one person I can’t stand. That’s priceless.” I said, bitterly sarcastic.

“You want to hate me? Fine, but remember that I can make you do anything.” His words melted into pure seduction in his last sentence and I felt a chill race down my spine.

“Keep telling yourself that.” I said and broke away from him. I turned quickly on my heel and began heading for the door, when suddenly I ran into him. “Move.” I glared.

“No.” Lucian said and bared his fangs at me. That was a little bit scary, I’ll admit, but I didn’t back down and I didn’t flinch.

“Move.” I demanded again and he growled at me. I sighed in frustration. Then an idea came to me. “Please move?” I asked, and looked up at him with what I hoped to god was a sexy look. My hand rested on his chest and I stood on my tip-toes to kiss his neck and I heard his breath exhale fast. Lucian began turning us around and right when I saw my chance I backed away. “Thanks.” I said in a cheerful tone and ran down the hall.

“Goddamnit!” I heard Lucian yell as I made my way to my room. I was grinning in triumph, but I guess I was smiling too soon because I ran into Lucian. Again.

“Do you not understand or something? I can’t have feelings for you ok, and I’m sure you feel the same way. You’re too much of an asshole to like; your ego fills up whatever space you don’t. Go away.” I waved my hand in the air in dismissal.

“I wasn’t finished yet. You think this is any easier for me than it is you? I don’t have feelings for people, least of all a human. I don’t need them. Emotions are useless, and the only reason I’m in this goddamn coven is because my brother is probably going to go crazy any minute and I’m the only one strong enough to kill him. If I kill him, it’s like hitting two birds with one stone, because his mate dies along with him. You got that? I have to kill the only family I have left because his mate’s stupid friend got kidnapped by the hunters that are chasing after you and got some disease and offed about half of the coven. Now I’m having feelings for a mortal woman who hates me nonetheless? And I’m the asshole? You’ve got nerve.” He said in a highly acidic tone. I stood there frozen, my heart in my throat. I had had no idea what he was going through, the only thing I had cared about was myself. Lucian, all this time, had been fighting more battles than I had. “You can go home when the hunters are no longer a threat. Would that make you happy, princess?” He growled and turned to walk away.

I couldn’t stop him. I was still shocked. I didn’t know if he was really capable of killing his brother, but even if he was, it was a tremendous task filled with consequences. I’d simply disliked him because he was an asshole all the time, but, as I had just found, he had a reason to be. I still didn’t like him. Not one bit; but hell, I sure felt sorry for him.

I turned slowly and walked the rest of the distance to my room, silent as the grave. Just as I put my hand on the doorknob, I heard a woman scream. It didn’t stop either. A few thudding noises followed, and maybe a few crashes. It took my brain a minute to get up to speed with what was going on, but as soon as I realized I ran as fast as I could towards Lucian’s room. There wasn’t anything I could do about vampires in trouble, they could squash me like a bug with their pinky, but I was fairly certain he could.
