*Kaitlyn MacDonald*

A few weeks have passed since Drew and Asher left, and I've all but managed to get the two of them out of my head and focus on other things, like my destroyed friendship with Beth.

Sitting alone after school for all those days made me realize that I miss Beth, and that Drew was taking up too much of my life. So, I decide to take a risk and talk to Beth.

Parking my car in front of her house, I sit and breathe for a few seconds, psyching myself up for the confrontation that's about to transpire.

"You can do this. You've only been friends with her for, like, three years now. No biggie," I pep talk.

I walk up her driveway, fondly noting the scar on the side of a tree from when Beth crashed her bike. I ring her doorbell, wringing my hands in nervousness as I hear light footsteps approach the door.

Beth opens it, and her face, previously smiling, becomes impassive.

"Kaitlyn. Hi." She starts. Her voice betrays no emotion, and I cringe inwardly. This is all my fault.

"Hi. I was wondering if we could talk?" I ask, anticipating a harsh no.

Beth shifts furtively in her doorway, and looks back into the house.

"Is this not a good time? Do you have company?"

"Yeah, Mack is over. But I guess I have time to talk right now. After all, what's five minutes out of a month?" She steps out onto the porch and closes the door behind her. "What is it?"

"I just wanted to apologize for blowing up on you about the whole Drew incident. It was wrong of me to ostracize you from our friendship just because I was mad about something you did before I even knew Drew. And I was hoping, if you didn't mind, that we could at least try being friends again." The words poured out of my mouth like a waterfall, and I couldn't stop them from announcing themselves to my slightly willing audience.

Beth's face changes as she hears my words, something flashing in her eyes.

"Kaitlyn, I-"

"I know, I know. I just, I feel so bad for what I did, you know?"

"Kaitlyn, you didn't even do anything. If anything, I should be the one apologizing. After all, I was the one that slept with him while you were gone, lied about it and hid it from you, and then got mad at you myself when you first confronted me about it."

"I guess we're both in the wrong, then," I laugh, tears pooling in my eyes. Beth's eyes mimic my own, a lone droplet sliding down from the corner of her eye. She laughs along with me, and we're hugging like there was never anything between us.

She pulls away from me, wiping at her eyes, and I do the same, balling up my sweater sleeve and blotting my tears away. "Do you want to come inside? I know Mack is here, but I think we'd both agree that friends are more important that boyfriends. I can send him home."

"Wait, when did you start dating?"

"Oh, Kaitlyn, clueless as ever." She laughs, and opens the door for me to step into her house.

Mack is sitting on the couch, a bag of chips in hand and scrolling through his phone. He looks up as we enter. "Hey, Beth. Oh, hi, Kaitlyn. What are you doing here?"

"Why wouldn't she be here, Mack?" Beth retorts, a grin on her face. "She is my best friend, after all."

He holds up his hands in surrender. "Girls. I'll never understand them."

"I wouldn't expect you to," I comment, sitting down on a chair by the couch. "We are a very interesting species, that nothing, including ourselves, can understand us."

"Kaitlyn," Beth says, a confused look on her face. "Did you start doing drugs? How much did I miss?"

I laugh. "Nothing at all."

We spend a few hours catching up and snacking, telling jokes and stories from our time apart. When I have to leave, Beth walks me to the door.

"Kaitlyn?" She asks.

"Yeah?"

"Thank you for coming over. You had the guts to do what I couldn't, because I was scared that you never wanted to be friends again."

"That's the thing about being best friends with someone," I remark, pulling on my shoes. "You can't lose a friendship over such a trivial matter such as this one. Especially when we've been through so much together."

"Thank you. From the bottom of my heart." Beth laughs again, wiping another tear from the corner of her eye.

"Of course. Hey, guess what!"

"What?"

"Chelsea Tempest is actually the coolest person ever. We bonded a little bit over the past month, and I think the three of us will be great friends."

Beth smiles. "I'll take your word for it. Now, get going before I force you to spend the night."

"Yes, mom." I take my keys and give her a hug. "See you later, Beth."

"Bye!"

I leave her house and breathe a sigh of relief. That couldn't have gone any better.

The drive home is quick, as there's little traffic, and I pull into my driveway, noticing Peyton's car parked on the street. She and Jordan must be hanging out.

I really ship the two of them, and I think they're serious about each other.

Walking in the door, I kick off my shoes and hang up my jacket, twirling my keys around my finger. "I'm home!" I call out, walking into the kitchen.

Sam is eating a sandwich and reading a book. I double take.

"Sam. Are you actually reading a book?"

"Hey," he scowls, "I do other stuff than sleep and play video games."

"Okay, okay, sorry," I say, sliding into a chair. "Are Peyton and Jordan here?"

"Yeah, they're watching Disney movies upstairs. I guess it's their something-month-anniversary today, so they ordered a pizza and are just going to chill upstairs today."

"Sounds like a fun Sunday." I remark.

Sam nods, taking another bite of his sandwich. "Yeah, it's better than studying for finals."

"It's the middle of March. Finals are in May."

"Says the girl who thought that the hardest part of freshman year was finding somewhere to sit at lunch," he shoots back with a grin.

"Hey!" I defend. "It's not my fault Beth had a different lunch period than I did. I'm sure you didn't end up in the library the first week of school."

"What are you even talking about? You wanted to eat lunch in the library because you liked books more than people; you told me that yourself?" My brother grins triumphantly, knowing that he won.

This time.

"Whatever. I'll be up in my room."

"Don't get lost."

I merely roll my eyes and head upstairs, determined to lay around doing nothing for a while. However, when I open my door, I'm met with a surprise.

Chelsea, Blake, and Ashton are all sprawled around my room, a few boxes of pizza stacked on my desk.

"Bless up!" Chelsea cries when she catches sight of me. "Boys, we can eat now! Kaitlyn's here!"

"FOOD!" Blake and Ashton yell in unison, diving for the pizza.

As they start eating, Chelsea turns to me and says, "The smell has been driving them crazy for about 15 minutes. Now come on, let's eat!"

We talk like we're old friends while eating pizza. I finally add the three of them on Snapchat, and we all promise to start streaks with each other.

"How did you guys get here?" I ask, taking a sip from a bottle of water. "The only car I see is Peyton's."

"Well," Blake says, "you know Ashton lives in your neighborhood, so we parked at his house and walked here."

"Yeah, and by the way, after all this pizza, you're driving us back, because I'm not walking up that hill today." Ashton calls from my bed, a piece of pizza in either hand.

What is it with this kid and food? I'll never understand.

The four of us hang out for a few hours, during which I tell Chelsea that I made up with Beth. She's actually supporting of it, and is willing to give a friendship between the three of us a chance.

When the pizza is gone, and we're all dead on my floor, I decide it's time to drive them up the hill to Ashton's house.

"Bye, guys!" I call out, waving as Ashton walks into his house, and Blake and Chelsea into their respective cars.

"Bye, Kaitlyn!" They shout back.

I love my friends.

When I get home, I shower, clean up my room, and get ready for school tomorrow. Setting my alarm, I climb into bed and shut off my light.

The morning comes quickly, and I roll out of bed and into the bathroom, where I change into a pair of jeans and a long sleeve shirt with a blanket scarf over it. Running a brush quickly through my hair, I grab my backpack and shoes and head downstairs to eat breakfast.

Throwing the bananas, strawberries, ice, and orange juice into the blender, I quickly pulse it before pouring the delicious liquid into a glass and sitting at the table.

Jordan and Sam come down the stairs at the same time, both in various states of dress.

"Are you sure it's Monday?" Sam groans.

"Yeah, I checked four times," Jordan responds, slumping into a seat, buttoning his shirt.

"Ugh," we all groan at the same time. Jordan bangs his head on the table and Sam clinks his spoon against his cereal bowl with a vacant look on his face. I finish my smoothie and put the glass in the dishwasher.

"Sam, if you want to come with me, I'm leaving in five minutes. Or, if you want to be late, you can go with Jordan." I offer, pulling my shoes on.

"I'll go with Jordan. He's more fun in the mornings than you are."

"Yeah, because he's half asleep and makes obscene jokes."

"Hey, I love my obscene jokes," Jordan butts in, head still down on the table. I roll my eyes and grab my backpack.

"See you guys at school."

I jam out on the way to school, only pausing briefly to think about how long it's been since Drew left. It's been about a month, I think. Once at school, I find a parking spot easily near the front of the lot. As I walk in, I spot something and freeze.

It's Drew's car. I would recognize that beautiful automobile anywhere.

So, he disappears for a month and then reappears one day out of the blue? Strange.

I walk cautiously into the school, keeping my eyes peeled for a 6 foot-something guy. When I spot him, I hide behind a group of people talking amongst themselves. Peering around them, I see Drew talking to someone a little shorter than him.

Asher.
