Bria

Chris woke me up extra early to go get back into the guest bed so his dad wouldn't catch us.

It was about 7 AM, but I couldn't go back to sleep. I decided to text Chris.

Me:
I'm bored, come in here :(

Chris💚:
That would defeat the whole purpose of us sneaking you back to the guest room, my dad will think I slept in there with you.

Me:
But I'm boreeeeeeeeeddddddd

Chris didn't respond, instead I heard footsteps approaching the door, and he came to the entrance shirtless with just some ball shorts on.

That's when I remembered the events from last night. I can't believe I...I can't believe I was so ready to...my goodness.

"Come downstairs, I'll make breakfast before we go get Forest." Chris said sleepily.

"Ok."

I climbed out of bed and followed him downstairs.

"You want eggs?" He asked taking the egg carton out of the fridge.

"Yeah."

Even with the euphoric state Chris would bring me to, the thought of Forest and I having to return to Greg's house with that fucking pedophile living there stressed me out tremendously.

Although Forest would be sleeping in my bed from now on, I was still worried for him.

"You alright?" Chris asked, noticing my change in attitude.

"I'm fine." I lied to him.

"You can be honest with me. We both got shit going on you know." He said cracking the egg and dropping it in the pan.

"I'm just stressing that's all. I'll be fine."

He stayed quiet and continued cooking the eggs, before speaking up again.

"Forest asked me something the other day. I know you're already stressed but it's something you should think about."

"What is it?"

"What's going to happen to him when you go to college?" He asked turning the eye off and dumping the eggs on a plate.

"I..I don't..I don't know. I don't want to just dump him with my dad."

Now I'm even more stressed.

"He suggested him and I stay together, like brothers." Chris said chuckling. That sounds like something Forest would say.

"Even if you were willing to have him with you, I can't imagine being away from him..or you."

"Babe." Chris said shyly.

"I mean it Chris. I pretty much gave up on trying to contact my mom..and I emailed the colleges I applied to, so they'd send me new copies of the letters. But the longer I wait the more worried I get, if I got accepted I'm leaving you and Forest. But if I didn't, I'll be worried about my future."

"Understand Bria. I'm willing to take Forest. You know that, right?"

"It's not your responsibility to basically raise him-"

"Brianna, I can."

Stress stress stress.

"Who knows, I could've already revived the letters. I haven't checked my email." I said shrugging.

Chris straight faced me.

"What?" I asked him.

"Are you serious? Check your email!" He said taking some bacon out of the refrigerator.

"I'm scared!"

"Bria-"

"Fine!" I told him, pulling out my phone and opening the email app.

UNC CHAPEL HILL (1)

OHIO STATE (1)

HOWARD UNIVERSITY (2)

UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO (1)

Shit. I'm too scared to open them.

"Did you get any?" Chris asked me, before getting popped by bacon grease.

"Y-Yeah."

"Well? Did you get accepted??"

I click on the first email. UNC chapel hill.

Brianna Hudson, blah blah blah we received your email blah blah blah and your letter is attached below.

I took a deep breath and clicked on the attachment.

The letter began with "We regret to inform you that..."

Oh god no.

I skipped to the end of the letter. "We are unable to offer you a place in the class of 2018."

My heart sunk. I forced myself not to cry, there are more to read, right?

"I..didn't get in to Chapel Hill." I told Chris.

"Are you kidding? That's some bullshit..what about the others?"

I continued to read the other emails.

Ohio State. Rejected.

Howard. Rejected.

The more I read, the more tears fell from my eyes. My mom told the truth...I didn't get accepted to any of them.

I hadn't said anything to Chris, who was still cooking. I just stood there.

He finally looked up and noticed me crying, he immediately stopped what he was doing and came and hugged me.  Usually that would make me feel a lot better but right now, nope.

"I didn't get accepted to any." I sobbed, no longer controlling myself.

"You read through them all?"

"All but UoT, I don't even want to look now." I told him, shoving my phone in his hand.

"You want me to read it?" He asked softly.

"Fine." I said putting my face in his chest.

He stayed quiet as he read the email. Let me guess, another rejection.

"Babe.."

"Don't tell me." I mumbled into his chest.

"Brianna-"

"Chris. I don't want to hear it."

"Bria you got in!"

I didn't believe it. I looked at my phone and finally I saw it, the words I WANTED to see. "We are happy to inform you that.."

Finally!

"I guess I'll be staying in Toronto then." I told him excitedly. UoT wasn't my first choice, but I'm happy I got into a decent university at all.

"I'm proud of you."

As far as I knew, Chris didn't have plans on going to college. I'm sure he wasn't interested in pursuing basketball, so it made me wonder..what is it that he planned to do?

"What do you plan to do after you graduate?" I asked him.

"Well- ...oh shit." He stopped what he was doing and ran over to the pan he was cooking the bacon in and took the now crispy strips of bacon, and put them on a plate.

All of a sudden Christopher's Dad came downstairs in a robe. "I smell food." He grinned, walking into the kitchen.

"Dad please go put some real clothes on."

"I will I will. Brianna it's almost 8, I when do you have to get your brother?"

"Oh shiiiii— shoot. Oh shoot. I have to get him at 8:30."

"It's fine I'll take her, she and I will eat in the car." Chris told his dad.

"Not so fast, Chris you're banned from the car. I'll take Bria."

"We explained to you what happened. Will you please trust me just to get Forest and drop them off? I'll come straight back."

"Fine."

Chris

Brianna and I ate in the car, as she drove in my car to get Forest.

Once we'd finally made it to the upscale neighborhood Forest's friend lived in, Bria left me in the car as she went to ring the doorbell.

Soon Forest came out the house with his overnight bag in his hand, and he followed Bria to the car.

"Hey Chris." Forest said as Bria helped him get in.

"Hi Forest."

"Did um you and Bria have fun at the dance?"

"Yeah, we had fun." I lied to him.

"Not too much fun." Forest laughed.

"Yeah Forest, not too much fun." I lied again.
