Jason

My eyes were glued to Molly as she sat down next to me in the wooden chair. My toast fell from my hand and landed on the plate below. I couldn't fathom the fact that she was here, sitting beside me after falling off the earth for over a damn year.

I still vividly recall the last time I saw her. Having decided to be friends with benefits, she had come to my apartment late one summer night. I remember telling her that I didn't want to do that anymore and that I still loved her because, at the time, I did. She told me she didn't want me in that way. Basically went on about how I was an awful boyfriend but the best sex partner she ever had, and she wanted to keep it that way.

I had felt like my heart had been torn out of my chest and stomped on all over again from when I found out she had cheated on me months before that. We had gotten into a heated argument, and she left and never came back...until now.

I breathed deeply before finding my voice. "What do you need to talk to me about?" I questioned flatly.

Molly looked away from me for a moment before maintaining eye contact once more. She cradled the baby boy in her lap as he began to stir around in her arms and let out small whines.

"I really don't even know how to say this...but I have to." She muttered, shaking her head. "A few months after we stopped seeing each other, I found out I was pregnant."

I furrowed my brows and shook my head at her. "Okay?..." I trailed off. "That's great...what does that have to do with me?" I asked, even though I knew exactly where this conversation was headed. I prayed to God above that she wouldn't say what I thought she was going to say.

"Jason..." She trailed off, frowning deeply. "I think my baby might be your son."

I looked at her in absolute disbelief as my stomach began to knot up. "Molly, what the hell do you mean you think he might be my son?!" I roared, causing her to flinch and her baby to start crying.

She lifted the crying baby to her shoulder and rubbed his back in an attempt to soothe him. She shushed him gently. Guilt filled me as I watched him sob. I didn't mean to be an asshole and make the kid cry.

"Look, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have yelled and scared him." I apologized, gripping at my hair out of frustration. "I'm just really fucking shocked right now."

"I know you are, and I wasn't expecting you to be exactly thrilled about me coming at all, let alone dropping this bomb on you." She stated. "But he's starting to get bigger, and I need to find out who his dad is before he realizes something's missing...he deserves that."

All I could do was nod my head as she continued, completely out of words at this point. "Around the time he was conceived, you and I were still sleeping together, but I had also had a one-night stand. So it's between the two of you."

My brows rose in shock, although I had no idea why I was even a lick of surprised. This was Molly, after all.

"The other guy, I have no way of contacting him. I don't know his name, number, or anything. It was just a drunken hook-up." She sighed. "But I knew you were working here, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask if you would get DNA tested. It would give my son and me the answer we need."

I could feel my heart rate start to pick up as I looked at both her and the little boy in her arms. "Well, like-I mean, do you have any idea which one of us might be the dad?" I asked.

"Honestly, Jason, you and I were hooking up consistently, and the other guy was just a one-time thing, so it's more likely to be you..." She trailed off. "His eyes, they're bright and blue just like yours, and sometimes when I look at them, I see you."

"God." I hissed under my breath, not believing what was happening right now. "I can't believe this shit."

"I wasn't expecting to get pregnant, Jason. I was on birth control." She claimed. "But when I look at my innocent child, I feel so guilty for putting him into a situation like this, where he might grow up never knowing his dad, so I had to come and ask." She pleaded, her eyes growing watery. "He's the best thing to ever happen to me, and I want him to have the best life."

I let out a sigh and looked down at the little boy who was cooing and playing with Molly's long blonde hair. Guilt and sorrow took over my emotions as I saw his cheeks still stained with the tears I made him cry earlier. That could be my boy...my son.

"What's his name?" I asked, watching as Molly's face lit up just a little.

"His name's Liam." She smiled. "Liam Blake."

I leaned forward in my seat so that I could get a better look at him. "Hi Liam." I cooed, watching as his little head bobbled toward me. He gave me a gummy smile, and immediately I smiled back at him. I had to admit that he was an adorable baby. As much as I couldn't stand Molly, I would absolutely be there for this little one if he turned out to be mine.

"Here." Molly offered, holding him out for me to take.

I felt myself grow nervous as I took Liam into my arms. He looked up at me with another adorable, toothless smile, cooing at me and flailing his chunky little arms. Both Molly and I laughed at the little boy as he got comfortable with me. I cooed back at him, making him giggle loudly.

Liam had blonde hair just like Molly, and he definitely had her smile too. I saw what she was talking about with his eyes. They were the same shade of blue as my own, and it sent chills down my spine.

"Molly?" I asked, looking up at her with an even mixture of confusion and irritation. "Why wouldn't you tell me this a long time ago? I mean, how old is he now?"

"Well, first off, I didn't know I was pregnant until I was almost halfway done with the entire pregnancy. I had no symptoms at all and just minor weight gain, so I really had no clue...He's 5 months old now."

"Well, why not tell me when you found out?" I asked sharply. "I mean, what the hell is wrong with you?" My voice rose in volume as I grew more perplexed with what was going through her head.

"I don't know Jason, okay. I didn't know who the dad was, I thought maybe when he was born, I would be able to look at him and tell, but I couldn't."

Before I could even respond to her, I heard footsteps coming down the hallway that led to the kitchen. Olivia appeared in the doorway, totting a container in her hands and that precious smile on her face. It faded slightly as her eyes darted from me to the baby in my arms and over to Molly. Her brows furrowed in confusion.

"Um, hi..." She trailed off. "I brought cookies if anyone wants some." She stated softly, sitting them down on the table in front of us.

"Hi Liv." I greeted, forcing a smile as my heart nearly beat out of my chest. "Uh this is-"

"Molly." she cut me off, sticking her hand out to shake Olivia's. Liv raised her brows and reluctantly shook her hand. "I uh-I think I should get going." Molly muttered, standing up from her seat and taking Liam back into her arms.

"Yeah..." I nodded, scratching the back of my head.

"I guess I'll shoot you a call to get everything figured out?" She asked, handing me her phone to put my number in. I glanced over at Olivia, who had now taken a seat across from me. Her arms were crossed, and her brows were pulled together as she tried to understand what was playing out before her.

I took Molly's phone and quickly added my number before handing it back to her.

"Thanks." She muttered, obviously feeling the awkwardness that had grown thick in the room. "Uh, I'll show myself out." She stated before disappearing.

I let out a groan before dropping my head into my hands in pure frustration. I could hear Olivia shuffle around the table and take a seat next to me.

"Jason?" She called out, pushing my shoulder lightly. "Was that the ex you told me about a while ago?"

I looked up at her and nodded my head. "Yeah." I stated blankly.

"Well...What was she doing here, talking to you?"

I sighed, not knowing what this would do to the relationship that we were building. It might be enough to ruin everything between us, and I wouldn't blame Liv for running, to be honest. A baby would be a huge responsibility that I'm not even sure I'm ready for.

"So...she had a baby." I started. "And she said there's a chance he might be mine."

My stomach turned sharply as those words left my mouth. My eyes scanned Olivia's face to look for a reaction, but her face had gone expressionless. Her warm brown eyes were locked on the table.

"Liv, I had no idea about any of this." I stressed, placing a hand on hers. I could see her body stiffen before she let out a deep breath, relaxing again. "I-I mean, she just showed up here with a baby and told me." I exasperated, feeling sweat beads form at my hairline.

I could feel my heart still racing what felt like 90 miles an hour in my chest. I knew this was going to happen. Not this specifically, but something to fuck everything up. I just knew it. Nothing ever went perfectly smooth in my life. Nothing.

"Jason." Her sweet voice whispered, snapping me out of my thoughts. I glanced over at her and was greeted by her soft hand on my cheek. I nearly melted against her gentle touch. "That's some really shocking news..." She trailed off. "But I'm here for you, okay?"

I furrowed my brows, a little confused. I mean, I was happy she said the exact opposite of what I thought she might say, but I couldn't help but wonder if she was really okay with all of this. Hell, I wasn't even okay with it my damn self.

"You wouldn't leave?" I asked, grabbing hold of her hand in mine. She brushed my knuckles with her small thumb and shook her head.

"Why would I do that?" She questioned, cocking her head to the side. "First of all, it's not like you went and got her knocked up last week. Secondly, If somehow that baby is yours, I think he deserves to have his dad in his life...he'd hit the dad lottery with you."

A sense of relief rushed over me as she finished speaking. I couldn't hold back the smile forming on my lips in response to her heartfelt words. "I don't know what I did to deserve you sweetheart. Thank you."

I brushed my fingers across her rosy cheek. Although she said all these things to me, I could tell she wasn't telling me 100% how she felt. Her eyes dropped from gazing into mine to her lap.

Before either of us could say another word, Russ and Cassie came rushing into the kitchen.

"So what the hell was that all about?" Russ wasted no time at all to bombard me with questions. "I can't believe she came here bro...and was that her kid?" He asked, flabbergasted.

"She definitely came, and that was definitely her kid..." I trailed off, shaking my head. "Might be my kid too."

Both Russ and Cassie's mouths hit the floor as they stared at me in complete shock.

"I'm sorry, what?" Russ howled, letting out a loud chuckle. "You're kidding, right? Tell me you're joking, Jase, because that's real funny!"

"I wish I was."

"Fuck man." He hissed, plopping down in the chair across the table from me. "How shitty would it be to have pro-created with her. I mean, did the kid look like you at all?"

I shrugged my shoulders, feeling Olivia's hand squeeze mine lightly. "I don't know, Russ. He looked a lot like Molly to be honest. He had blue eyes kind of like mine, but that's no tattle-teller."

"Well, you know we've all got your back, man." He assured me, gesturing toward Cassie and Olivia.

I let out a deep breath, trying to disperse some of the pent-up anxiety writhing inside me. "Thanks, man. I'm so grateful for all of you guys."

Olivia rested her head on my shoulder, and I leaned down to press a kiss on top of it. I could tell that her face had gone blank, and her mind was running in circles. All I wanted to do was pull her aside and really talk to her about this, but before I could even begin to speak, an alarm went off, signaling us off to a call.

Russ and I shot up and quickly said our goodbyes to the girls before rushing out to grab our gear and hop on the truck.

"Boyd, everything okay?" Captain asked, glancing over at me.

I placed my helmet on and nodded my head. "I hope so, Cap. It's complicated."

Olivia

Cassie moved over into the chair beside me as the sirens of the firetrucks grew further and further away. I could feel her eyes burning into the side of my face as she stared at me, concerned.

"Babes?" She asked, breaking the silence between us. "Are you okay? That was a huge shock, to say the least."

I let out a small sigh before nodding my head. "Yeah, I'm okay, Cass, just caught off guard...maybe a little worried about what's going to happen."

"What do you mean, Liv?"

My stomach began to knot up once more as my mind jumped to the worst conclusions. "I just-I'm worried that if that's Jason's baby...what if he decides he wants to leave me and be with them as a family." I muttered, twisting my lips to the side. "I mean, I want him to be there for that baby if he's his dad, but I don't want to lose him in the process, you know?"

"I don't think that's going to happen, Liv. She's his ex for a reason."

"Well, exes get back together all the time Cass, you know that."

She grabbed my face in both her hands and made it to where we were looking directly at each other. "Olivia, stop jumping to the worst fucking conclusion all the time." She warned. "All you're doing is driving yourself crazy."

I shook my head, and Cassie dropped her hands back down to her lap. "You have to understand where I'm coming from, Cass." I pleaded. "Molly was his girlfriend for over two years...he was in love with her."

"Liv, that may be true, but he's with you now." She tried assuring me.

"He's not even with me, with me Cass. Nothing's official about us."

Cassie shook her head. "Just because you're not officially together doesn't mean that he's going to just drop everything that you guys are building to be with his ex."

"His ex and their baby, you mean," I added, crossing my arms.

"We don't even know that yet, Liv!" she exclaimed. "That might not even be his baby, and everything could go back to the way it was."

"I know." I whispered, feeling my eyes grow watery. The salty tears that were forming stung my waterline. "I'm just so confused and stressed out."

Cassie sighed before pulling me into a hug. "It's gonna be okay babes." She promised. "If anything knowing Jason, he's probably scared that you're going to leave him."

"I just wish that my life could be drama-free for five minutes Cass."

"I know, babes, and it will be soon, you know I'm never, ever the one to defend guys, but there's something about Jason that tells me we don't have to worry too much about him...I mean, I'll always have my eyes on him, but he really cares for you."

"I know. He told me he didn't want to lose me over this. I just...my mind is just going non-stop right now."

"Maybe one of these will help?" Cassie asked, pulling the container of cookies we had baked over to us. "Nothing makes a fat ass feel better than a cookie." She joked, causing both of us to erupt in laughter.

"What would I do without you?" I smiled as she placed a cookie in front of me.

She shrugged before taking a bite out of her own. "You'll never find out because I'll always be here whether you like it or not."

About an hour had passed, and Cassie and I finally heard the guys return to the station. We were still right where they left us at the kitchen table. Russ walked in and sat next to Cassie, draping an arm around her shoulders and pulling her in for a kiss.

I glanced up and saw Jason still standing in the doorway. As my eyes were met with the deep frown on his face, my stomach went swirling. He nudged his head toward the exit of the room.

"Let's go talk...in private." He stated with little emotion.

Nodding my head, I stood up from the chair and walked over to him. He looked even more upset the closer I got to him. I could feel my hands start to shake, wondering what he wanted to talk to me about that required us to leave the room.

"Follow me."
