All I have been able to think about was Nathan. I couldn't stand it anymore I was trying to do everything to forget about him. Spending all my free time with Rose now that I was finally able to or sleeping needing all the extra hours I could get. My eyes felt strained from staring at my computer screen as I confirmed his calendar appointments.

"Hey," Eve said in a sing song voice walking up to my desk finally snapping my eyes away from my laptop. "You ready for lunch?" Eve smiled making me nod as I turned off my computer and put it in the drawer. "Yes," I expressed. "I need a break from these phone calls." I sighed exhausted with a smile as I stood to grab my things making her chuckle.

As I put on my coat, I looked up to see a man across on the other side of the large firm. Walking slowly with Eve, I got an odd feeling watching his demeanor before his eyes met mine. Quickly looking away hoping he didn't see me staring. "Is there anyone else that's new here?" I asked as we rode the elevator making her think for a moment.

"Yeah, I think a few other interns. Everyone wants to work here." She answered looking down at her phone making me nod weakly as I slowly tried to relax. Hoping that person was just another intern. But then why haven't I seen him here before?

"And he said he reads Jane Austen too. I gave him my number." Eve said enthusiastically as I looked down at my food thinking as the side of my head rested on my hand. "Wait, I hope he's not gay." She said softly to herself in realization making me laugh lightly looking away from my sandwich.

"He wouldn't have taken your number if he was." I replied making her smile at me amused. "I thought you weren't listening to me." Eve smiled making me chuckle. "To be honest I wasn't. I'm sorry it's just-" I began until she cut me off. "It's Nathan isn't it." Eve smiled wider before bringing her straw to her mouth.

My lips parted caught off guard making her even more amused. "What? N-No-" I began again until she spoke. "Oh, please. I've seen how you two looks at each other. It's obvious that you two have a thing." Eve said making me look away awkwardly not knowing what to say. "We don't have a thing." I couldn't help but blush lightly at the thought.

"Just at least tell me if you two have sex. I just have to know what he's like in bed. I can only imagine." Eve trailed off smirking to herself getting lost at the thought. I couldn't help but laugh at her bluntness. I was glad to have a friend like Eve while all this was happening around me.

"Well, actually..."'I trailed off looking away. "No way!" She beamed through a shocked smile as people turned their heads slightly making me laugh. "Twice." I continued making her eyes widen starstruck as she leaned back into her seat making me smile amused.

"I hate you. Tell me everything." She said leaning her elbows on the table making me laugh lightly rolling my eyes. Her eyes were wide and attentive as a smile crept on her face as she ate a French fry. Ignoring the confused feelings, I felt talking about Nathan and I's relationship as girly gossip. Applying a fake smile to answer her.

"There's nothing really to tell. They were just one-night stands. It won't happen again." I answered through a carefree demeanor. "I'm sure it won't." Eve smirked amused making me ignore her. "I'm extremely jealous." Eve continued through a smile making me smile looking away to continue to eat.

As the doors opened onto our floor, I made sure to look around for that unfamiliar man I saw earlier. It was difficult to point out anyone in the crowds of people walking around. "Has anyone hired anybody new?" I asked Nathan curiously as I gave him his lunch. I tried not to show my worry as he began to eat.

"Not to my knowledge. Why?" Nathan asked with a full mouth not noticing my obvious worry. "No reason." I replied through a weak fake smile before quickly turning to walk away. I hated how hard it was for me to hide my feelings and how easy it was for him figure them out for himself. No one has ever cared enough before to figure out my habits and my tells when I'm uncomfortable or when I lie. It seemed like it matter how hard I tried to hide them it was still easy for him if he just looked long enough.

For the rest of the day, I continued to look up every once in a while, for that mysterious odd man. Maybe it was just someone I didn't see clearly. Or I'm going just going crazy with stress. I thought making me sigh as I finished Mr. Roday's files since him and Nathan were working on a case together.

His office was near the corner of the firm away from everyone making me glad it wasn't busy anymore not wanting to avoid bumping into anyone. Turning on the lights as I walked into his empty office since he usually left early for dinner with his family. I sighed finish putting away the few documents of theirs before turning around walking towards the door when someone walked inside.

I stumbled backwards as they closed the door behind them recognizing it as that unfamiliar man from before that I hadn't seen since. I was hoping I was just going crazy. "Who are you?" I asked sternly already knowing he was sent by my boss. To warn or kill me.

"You're a pretty bad hit man if you can't even point one out." He said stalking towards me. Stepping backwards away from him, slowly kicking off my heals as he turned off the lights to avoid suspicion. The young man's features only illuminated by the city lights through the large window. "Did he hire you?" I asked already knowing the answer as I continued to walk backwards as he stalked towards me.

"You should've known this would happen when you passed your deadline and started asking questions." He said before he pulled put a gun with a silencer attached making me quickly swing kick it out of his grasp. It flew onto the desk before sliding off onto the floor the other side making him charge towards me.

I grabbed him before kneeing him in the nose and throwing him against the wall. I knew I couldn't let him live knowing he would go after Nathan next. Running for the gun as he quickly stumbled onto his feet trying to recover to beat me to the gun. He grabbed my ankle as he stumbled to stay on his feet tripping me as we fell, hitting my chin on the floor.

I tried getting up quickly before I felt him on top of me turning me around roughly. He began to choke me making me fling my arms pushing him away struggling to breathe. I tried kicking, scratching, and punching him. I dug my thumb into his eye as he yelled out in pain before he sat on my legs keeping them from kicking him. Desperately feeling around for the gun trying to gasp for air.

Not being able to feel for it I clenched my hand making a fist. And with the last remaining strength I had, I punched him across the face. The man let go of my neck taking the opportunity to punch his probably broken nose again making him yell out in pain louder than before. Kicking him off me, getting up from underneath him before grabbing the gun and pulling the trigger twice quickly without hesitation.

My lips parted, standing paralyzed watching him fall limp to the ground in a pool of blood. My adrenaline continued to pump through my veins quickly looking out of the office glass walls for anyone still here. With my heart racing erratically using my shirt to quickly wipe off my prints before placing it near him. I rushed back to Nathan's office after putting on my heals and fixing my appearance.

Most of the office lights were off as I noticed it was now almost midnight. Rushing back towards my desk as Nathan was coming out of his office looking for me. Nathan's eyes widened raking me up and down in shock as J rushed towards him. His lips parted about to question me when I spoke before he could.

"There's others after us. He's in Mr. Roday's office." I said as I grabbed my coat to cover the blood on my shirt. I was about to continue when I remembered I couldn't call Julian to take care of the dead body. Realizing my fear was now reality.

My boss and the people I previously worked with were now working together to kill me. For the fact I've been asking questions and demanding answers about Nathan and second guessing this organization. I made myself an enemy and I was alone.

I knew all of this would come to bite me in the ass, but I had just hoped it wouldn't have been here at his office at the risk of someone seeing. "What the hell happened?" Nathan beamed full of worry looking over at his office. He snapped me from my thoughts making me anxious at how loud he was being. I looked around thankful there wasn't any people left in the building. "My boss ordered someone to come after me. After us. I had to kill him." I answered trying to cover my neck knowing there would be bruises.

I saw his eyes follow my movements and noticing my bruises making me study him noticing an unfamiliar emotion flash through his eyes making me look away. "I need to leave. I can't be here anymore. They know where I am." I quickly grabbed my things. "What do you mean leave?" Nathan asked full of seriousness seeing how tense and high strung I was.

"If I stay, they will hurt Rose to get to me. My boss knows about her. I can't risk her getting involved in this part of my life, Nathan. I'm sorry I brought all this chaos into your life." I answered. "You can't just leave." Nathan grabbed my hand.

Feeling that incessant throb in my heart, telling me I should apologize for being so callous. I know I was doing the wrong thing even though you knew it was what was right for me.

"I can't stay." I pulled my hand away from his turning away from him. Rushing to leave the building wanting to pack up the few things I owned picking up my life and live somewhere else just like I've done in the past. But this time with my daughter Rose.

But why does the thought of leaving this time hurt so much more? I feel like my heart has been ripped out. Leaving Nathan this way was gut wrenching. It was something I've never felt towards a man before. But I couldn't let it get to my head.

Nathan's POV

I watched through my glass office as Carmen, or I suppose Genevieve, walked away. Sighing realizing the time and how much work I still had left to get done tonight. Most of my daily work consisted of researching applicable laws and prior court rulings, preparing legal documents, and, when necessary, arguing cases in court. And all of my father's clients and cases he had handed down to me. That's why I wasn't shocked hearing the news that Genevieve was an assassin sent to kill me. It definitely hasn't been the first to come after me although I wasn't expecting it to be her of all the people here.

As I finished up a few things, I looked up making me frown not seeing her realizing Genevieve was still gone. Checking the time making me frown knowing there wasn't much to file for her to be taking this long. I got up leaving my office to look for her. As I opened my door, I saw Genevieve rushing towards me looking around frantically trying not to raise suspicion.

My eyes widened in shock as I raked her disheveled appearance up and down my lips parting about to interrogate her when spoke before he could. "There's others after us. He's in Mr. Roday's office." She said quickly grabbing her coat to cover the blood on her.

"What the hell happened?" I asked hoping she wasn't hurt. "My boss ordered someone to come after me. After us. I had to kill him." Genevieve answered hesitantly trying to cover her neck making me frown until I saw bruises. Filling with rage and other unidentifiable emotions.

"I need to leave. I can't be here." She muttered grabbing her things. "What do you mean leave?" I asked full of seriousness seeing the obvious fear on her face. "If I stay, they will find out about Rose. I can't risk her getting involved in this part of my life, Nathan. I'm sorry I brought all this chaos into your life." Genevieve answered. Turning around after I watched her leave raking my fingers through my hair. I grabbed my phone calling a friend of my father's.

"I need a favor." I said walking towards Mr. Roday's office. "How many people?" He asked. Answering him as I walked into the bloody scene. "Just one." "I'll be over in ten." He replied before he hung up making me shove my phone in my pocket.

I had only hoped the body and mess would be gone by tomorrow morning to avoid hysteria.

"Hey. Long time no see." He said walking into my office. "It's in here." I said standing up from my desk not wanting to get caught up in pleasantries. Walking past him out of my office as he followed me to Tim Roday's office. Seeing the unfamiliar man lying dead on the ground. He had a bloody nose and two gunshot wounds execution style making me slightly surprised Genevieve was able to do this.

"Seems like a professional hit. Bullet in the heart and head." He stated looking down at the body studying it. "Tell me when you're done to pay you." I said before leaving. He began to talk into the phone as I took the elevator down to the security office to delete the footage. I thought about everything Genevieve said. And feeling uncomfortable at the thought of her leaving and never seeing her again.

I had no right to care for her but the thought of something happen to her because of me or without me trying to at least help her filled me with immense guilt. Never seeing her again made my heart ache. Shoving away the pain in my chest as I struggled to work but all I could think about was her. I was itching to go chase after her, but I knew it was rational. I was only her boss, and she was a criminal. But yet she was now the in danger for protecting me.

As I continued to think about it, I stood up from my work grabbing my coat to leave. I looked over to see the man's employees finishing cleaning Mr. Roday's office before the morning. Taking the elevator down to rush into my town car before my driver dropped me in front of the hotel she was staying at.

Leaving the door as soon the car stopped, I rushed through the hotel lobby towards the front desk. "I need the room of Carmen D'Angelo." I demanded leaning on the counter as she was about to greet me making her smile. "I'm sorry, sir we can't give out that kind of information." She said making me grow impatient.

"It's important!" I beamed slamming the counter making her flinch as her fake smile wiped away. I just huffed in annoyance before rushing towards the elevator. "Sir!" The woman yelled as security ran after me as I repeatedly hit the button to close the doors.

They didn't make it in time before the doors closed making me look at the buttons again before pressing a random one. I looked to see all the numbers if floors making me groan pulling out my phone. I hesitantly called my brother as the elevator began to move.

"It's late. I really don't feel like arguing, Nate." Lee said as I grew more and more agitated. "I need you to track someone." I pleaded knowing he still had his computer even after he quit working. "I don't do that anymore. You know that." He said making me squeeze my eyes shut trying not to get angry and impatient.

"Please. I promise it doesn't involve work." I said hesitantly making it grow silent for a moment to think. "Fine. Who is it?" Lee gave in relieving a huge weight as I let go of a breath. "Carmen D'Angelo." I asked as I began to hear typing from his keyboard. "Your secretary? Why do you need to know where she is?" He asked.

"I just do. What hotel room is she in?" I asked quickly hating how much time is being wasted. "I don't know what kind of girl you're trying to hook up with, but she doesn't exist. Not before a month ago." Lee stated making me fill with annoyance does not explain everything right now.

"Just tell me where she is, Lee." I growled impatiently making him sigh. "538 on the fourth floor." He answered making me press the fourth floor. Rushing out the elevator to look for her room number. "Thank you. I owe you one." I said hanging up as I rushed to find her door until I found an open door in the distance.

Slowing down my pace before I saw Genevieve standing in a messy hotel room with clothes scattered, tables and lamps tipped over with broken glass around her feet. Her keys were still in her hand as she stood looking at everything in shock making me realize she must've just walked in. Walking slowly behind her into her hotel room not knowing what to say.
