Amelia

Do you still have any memories of your childhood love? I remember each and every one, but one in particular. He was my best and final true love. He could never be replaced. We were in the same class in both fifth and ninth grade. I sat right beside him.

He was extremely smart. We were like those academic rivals you've read about, but with more reality and a one sided love. We'd never spoken before, but he always said "Hi" as he passed in front of me in the hallway. Sitting so close to him made me nervous.

The worst days of my life were when he never said "hi" to me, because that little two-letter word meant everything to me because it was likely the only time he thought of me.

I've always thought that my feelings may be reciprocated and that we could someday be together. We might attend the same high school, keep in touch during college, perhaps even get married. But reality hit me hard when I entered high school and didn't see him.

He was really special to me. But he didn't even notice me. I think he greeted me every day out of formality rather than love.

I swear I remember his name, we had the same initial, seriously what was it? I stopped thinking about it as soon as I spotted Ms. Harper walking towards her car, so I walked faster to catch up with her. Out of breath, I greeted Ms. Harper with "Good morning." "Amelia, good morning. Is everything okay?" She added, worried.

I simply replied, "Can I speak with you for a moment, please?" She nodded, and I started speaking. "Do you remember my condition?" Another nod.

"I don't mean to be rude, Ms. Harper, but yesterday, as I was about to leave, a man who perfectly looks like you walked inside your house. I grabbed my things and left."

She smirked. "That's my brother, and don't worry, I'll tell him not to come over till I come back home. Alright?" I stood quiet because I was too embarrassed to talk.

She said, breaking the silence. "We should absolutely try the café I found. I've heard they have the best cakes. By the way, what is your favorite cake flavor?"

"Chocolate cakes." She jumped the moment she heard what I said. I stared at her, perplexed, and she explained "It's also my favorite. We're totally going there after work. Okay ?" This time, I answered, "Sure."

She drove to work, and I began walking inside with the thought, "I really love my job."
