Chapter 18 ∣  Electricity

-Adrasteia

He did that to me. In a moment in which I thought he'd just been trying to scare me; he really wasn't playing around. As I sat on the shower floor, the water hitting the top of my head while my face was pressed into my bent knees. I could still taste him, the saltiness lingering in my mouth and down my throat.

I'd never been treated that way before. I was nothing to him, but I had also brought him to the point of snapping. He never had done anything like that...and I was wrong to say the things I had. He could have beat me, forced himself on me, shared me with Harlan.

Yet, he didn't.

What he did, was humiliating...

I wrapped my arms tighter around my legs, breathing in as I choked on another sob. The tears had mixed with the water, washing away from my face and leaving it red and swollen.

He wanted me to respect him? After that...I don't respect him, I'm afraid of him.

If he wants respect, he needs to show me respect...the clothes I wear, are for his taste, not mine. The way he touches me whenever he likes, yes, I may enjoy it some of the time, but I don't like being used just because he wants to do whatever he likes.

Numbly standing to my feet, reaching my hand out to the wall, I stood to my full height. A wave of nausea hit me full force, desperately attempting not to throw up. The steam rising to the ceiling, was suffocating my lungs, drowning in anxiety of what he could do to me now.

There were no limits he held.

This really wasn't like the world I'd lived in. Maybe it really is time for me to stop acting like I'm still living on Earth, because I'm clearly not.

I turned the water off, stepping out of the shower and looking barely seeing my reflection on the mirror, which also was hazy. I'd gathered a fresh set of clothes, breathing in deeply as I towel dried my body and long hair. Slipping into the black thong and shorts, I sighed, the old clothes that he had torn from my body had been taken away. In its place, I'd had a deep violet bra now latched into place, the halter top sitting across my chest and exposing the flesh of my stomach.

I didn't feel like blows drying my hair, reaching for a tie and pulling it back away from my face. That lightning reflected off the silver collar, my eyes landing on it with hatred.

I'm weak.

But, I'm not helpless.

He got what he wanted, displaying his power and forcing himself down my throat...I didn't think he'd actually do that...

Hanging the towel over the railing, I gripped the handle of the door, opening the bathroom and letting the steam exit into the room.

You will join me for dinner.

My eyes landed on the bedroom door, what Keegan had told me, running through my mind. Silently opening and closing the door behind me, I pulled the door shut with a solid sound echoing in the hallway.

You've got to be kidding me.

Harlan was standing guard across the hallway, leaning against it with his arms folded across his chest. His dark hair had fallen over his left eye, the purple iris of his right one locking onto me the second the door had opened.

My eyes quickly glanced away from him, glaring down the hallway as I took a few steps away.

"Awe, it's going to be like that now?" His voice was filled with amusement, keeping his distance behind me.

Anger coursed through my veins, my hands turning into fists as I continued to walk away. I wasn't going to give in to this, the way they mocked me. I used to be silent and deadly, now look what I've been reduced to...

"Someone seems to have been put in their place," he sighed, "You're no fun anymore."

I whipped around, causing him to almost trip over me and I glared up at him, "You touched me without my consent and then you took my energy. How am I supposed to brush that off as a joke?"

"You should be happy, you saved me a trip to Earth," he chuckled, and I hissed at him. "It's not one-sided here, you know. If you need blood, then go ahead and ask. Speak up about what you want that doesn't involve whining like a child or wanting to go back home because if you haven't got that through your thick skull yet, it's not happening."

"You didn't bother to ask me," I rolled my eyes, "you just took what you pleased. And excuse me for not wanting to be treated like a slave here. This is like opposite land and it wasn't something I could ever have been prepared for."

He shrugged his shoulders in defeat, "Can't be helped with how damn fine you are lady vampire," he paused a moment, my not amused face sinking in and then stated, "Fine! Adrasteia, I'm sorry. Does that make it better? If you haven't noticed...Keegan doesn't want to treat you like a slave and that's making the ones who make up the rebellion very angry. They want vampires back, but not one seated by the king's side as his equal. He's sticking his own neck out and saved you from being killed. Can't you just give it an honest try here?"

"It's a start," I turned away from him, heading back toward where I knew Keegan would be waiting. "Though, I didn't know you were my counselor here...I would have pegged Tyco as the type who would be chatting my ear off about what I should and shouldn't do here, considering he advises Keegan."

"Where are you going?" Harlan asked.

"Keegan said to join him for dinner," I replied, knowing this friend of his was probably here to make sure I didn't run again. That's the thing...the one thing that I had come to terms with. I couldn't run away. Though it's beyond me how he could trust him after what he did.

Guess their bond runs deeper than mine ever would.

Harlan gently took hold of my forearm and pulled me toward a long hallway that led to the back of the castle. "That is true, though you're eating outside."

"He wants to blind me again?" I arched an eyebrow, not bothering to struggle in his hold. He led me away until we came to a large door. I heard voices, and I turned to my right, seeing one of them belonging to Keegan, while he spoke with what appeared to be kitchen staff. I could smell the scent of the foods being cooked from within the room. It was enough to make my mouth water, as the last time I attempted to eat normal food, I'd become sick from the lack of blood.

"Have fun," he nudged me and left, backtracking where he had come from.

Thanks a lot. I've had all the fun I can handle right now.

When Keegan shifted his attention to me, I flinched, his eyes making me quite nervous. His features softened for a moment, finishing what he was doing before he walked toward where Harlan had left me to stand.

"Are you hungry?" He asked.

I nodded my head silently, looking to the door and asking, "We're really going out there?"

"Yes," I turned back to him when he said, "Here," in his right hand he held out a pair of dark shade sunglasses. "This should help with your sight, don't need you blinding yourself. You've evolved residing on Earth...your species that is. You apparently used to be able to walk in this artificial light, like it was nothing, now the mere glance of a ray hitting your eyes the wrong way distorts your vision."

Taking them from his hand, I muttered, "Thanks."

"Let's be on our way then," he reached for the door, pulling it back and revealing the landscape before my eyes. Unfolding the shades, I placed them on the bridge of my nose, adjusting them behind my ears. He allowed me to move ahead of him, knowing he had nothing to fear from me, though my heart skipped a beat when he was behind me. Not being able to see him, made it hard for me to focus on the table and chairs that had been set out for us to have our meal.

Just the two of us.

When one of his hands touched my shoulder, I instinctively pulled forward and away, a sudden and quite cry passing my lips. He released me and I had to steady my accelerated heart, turning to meet his gray eyes through the shades.

"I-" the words wouldn't form, thankful he couldn't see the tears that filled my eyes, the bridge of my nose stinging.

"I'm..." Keegan's voice trailed off, sighing and shaking his head before finishing, "I'm sorry for what I did. I shouldn't have taken my anger out on you, but I did. It made me furious that the only person on your mind, was that useless beloved of yours when I touched you. I'm not entirely good at restraining myself...and I hurt you."

I whispered, "It's fine."

"No, it's not fine," he tried to outstretch his arm again and it took everything in me to stand still before the bipolar incubus, not sure if he would turn on me again. "I hurt you and I never wanted to. That was the whole reason I brought you here, to get you away from the one who not only physically broke you, but mentally and in your heart. I wanted to help you pick up those fractured pieces...and start over here."

"You frighten me," I finally spoke, "yes, I was out of line...but you used me and that's worse than being ignored by Landon."

"I know, and for the first time, I truly am sorry," he sighed, seeing the frustration cross his face, the emotions that had been conflicting inside of him were scary. He placed his right hand inside of his pocket and withdrew a key, looking to me before saying, "Maybe we can start over."

He was going to give me my strength? He wasn't afraid I'd kill him after what he did?

The honesty was lingering in his eyes and I knew he really was beating himself up over his actions. Good, he should, but it was nice to see an action that displayed that he did want to know me and not keep me imprisoned by his side.

"How about we keep that collar on?" There was a low hissing sound that came from above us, my eyes lifting just in time to get a glimpse of two shadows. That was, until I felt something hard whip across the side of my face, knocking me back and skidding across the ground.

That was a tail...

Trying to push up, one of my hands went to the side of my face, the sting and slight electrical current shocked me, displacing the energy. My eyes lifted, seeing two demons, a male and female, their large bat-like wings expanding from the center of their shoulder blades. Their thick tails thrashed around, the sudden fight that broke out between them and Keegan threw me off guard.

What?

I could see the electricity sparking the top layer of their skin and each time they contacted their tails or fists, I saw how much it weakened him. They were quick, using their ambush as an advantage.

Lifting and getting to my feet, I narrowed my eyes, feeling the shift in them as I moved quickly toward the one who had caught Keegan by surprise, her tail wrapped around his neck. Just as I was about to reach her, the incubus slammed onto the ground in front of me, but I slid to the ground, sweeping right around his body and continuing to the succubus.

Keegan's eyes had shifted, his hands trying to pry her tail off, but the electricity was causing his heart to beat erratically, afraid it might stop.

Where is Harlan...?

The electric blue in Keegan's eyes reverted to his gray orbs, his face grimacing in pain. Launching myself and gripping the succubus' shoulder and wrapping my arm around the top of her neck just under her chin, my fangs elongated, and I plunged them hard and deep into the side of her neck.

She screamed, but my own pain soon overwhelmed my body, the electricity pulsating through my body as I tried to end her life. Just as a large hand grabbed the back of my hair, I pierced through her windpipe, and when I was ripped away from her body, so did half of her neck come with me. The blood pooled onto the ground, the firm grip she had on Keegan, diminished.

I screamed, being thrown hard against the ground. Before I could even recover, my windpipe was cut off, suffocating as the incubus' large thick tail tightened around my neck. "Bitch."

The electricity flooding my body hurt, the hands that had lifted to try and loosen the grip, fell back to my sides, crying as the pain slowly consumed my body.
