Chapter 51 ∣  Resignation

-Eris

You're serious about this?

The screen flashed across my phone, perching myself on the stool near the kitchen island, Brice's response to my sudden resignation came as a bit of a shocker to him, after all, I'd been with the Dv8 Strip Club for quite some time. Maverick had informed me, that we would need to move and find some other place to stay, as Hendrix and some of his pack members knew where I lived. If Rainier and Zak were coming to kill him, they could now use their newly formed "alliance" with Hendrix in order to track us down.

Maverick wouldn't have any of that.

Yes. You have been such a wonderful boss, I can't thank you enough for the years of being able to work for your establishment, but I'm not just resigning in order to find a new job. I'm moving away, so the commute wouldn't be in my favor.

I clicked the send button, tapping the granite countertop with my thumb while I shook my left leg in anticipation. I'd been working there all my life on Earth; it was hard to just let go despite the type of work I did. It had become a second family, and it would be easier this way.

I feel like a girl breaking up over a text message.

I understand Eris, it's been a pleasure having you as an employee here and though I wish you had shown up in person, I'll accept your resignation.

Phew.

I smiled to myself, my long dark hair pulled back into a high ponytail, reaching for the piece of pizza that I had half eaten off the beige ceramic plate. Maverick was resting, it had been a while since he had any sleep and if we were going to be traveling, we'd both need as much rest a possible.

For the life of me, I just couldn't sleep. The way he'd touched me, my heart yearned for his love and devotion. Discovering that my demonic self knew on instinct how to bond, was exhilarating, willingly relinquishing a part of my soul to be forever protected and guarded by Maverick, made me feel like I had placed my trust correctly.

My vampire, I'll always be here for you. I do wonder though, what will have a part of a real soul inside your body do to you?

The way he spoke about guilt and morality, made me question whether this might change him as a person. An action he might have done, might play out differently now that he had some type of conscious within him. I liked that, knowing he might stop killing beings just because he could, maybe he could somehow repair the bond between him and his family. I wasn't sure exactly what he was thinking or planning, but it was nice to dream.

I flinched when my phone buzzed loudly on the countertop. I furrowed my brows and placed the slice of pizza back down, sliding the screen open and seeing Brice had left me another message.

Come to the club. We have a surprise for you.

"Odd?" I questioned, trying to think why Brice would need me to show up in person, after all, he had just said that it was okay that I resigned over our text message.

'Can it wait?'

I placed my phone back down on the countertop cautiously, taking the slice of pizza on the plate and standing from the kitchen stool. Opening the refrigerator door, I placed the pizza on the top shelf, hoping to keep it for later, unless Maverick decided to scarf it down when he woke up.

The phone lit up again, turning around and moving to the kitchen island. I leaned against the countertop, flicking the screen on and suddenly feeling relief.

Going away party. Come now.

Brice wasn't one to extend such an offer, but I guess this was a big change and if Salana and Teddy were helping him plan this, then I'm sure it would be fun.

Glancing up from my phone, I looked to the hallway and then back to the microwave, the clock displaying 9:38 PM. It surprised me that Maverick was still sleeping...maybe my soul was like a drug to him and it needed to wear off.

Well then, I don't see any harm in going to visit for a couple of hours before he wakes up and then we'll have to leave this place...forever. It was easier now; I'd figured out how to conceal my energy and keep myself off the radar if I wanted to and I think that was helping Maverick and I steer clear of the hunters. This at least, put my mind at ease, being able to fend for myself, for once.

Leaving my phone on the counter, I walked down the hallway, the dark soft carpet beneath my bare feet. Opening the door, Maverick's sleeping form could be found sprawled out on the bed, the covers just coming up over his waist, one of his arms across his face and the other resting on his chest.

"Don't you just look so sexy," I chuckled softly to myself, watching as he didn't move a single muscle when I had entered the room. Nearing the closet, I picked out a fitting outfit for my last night in the Dv8 Strip club. Seeing my reflection in the closet mirror, I smiled with satisfaction, wearing tight black leather pants, knee-high boots, a tight corset crop top that laced in the front and then finished the ensemble with my black leather jacket.

Walking to the side of the bed, I raised my eyebrows, whispering, "Are you really asleep?"

Maverick didn't say a word, but I noticed the faint rising and falling of his chest beneath his hand. Well then, I guess he is okay...but why is he sleeping like this?

"You sleep like you're dead," I sighed, moving to the bedroom door and heading down the hallway. When I reached the kitchen, my eyes scanned my phone, the screen lighting up once again. When I took it into my hand, I noticed that there were five missed calls in the order of:

Salana with two.

Brice with one.

Teddy with two.

When I slid the phone open, I saw there was another text, but it was from Salana this time.

Taking forever. Hurry up.

Should I faze, or should I just walk? Now that I had this ability once again, it was weird to think I didn't have to walk somewhere I had been before or at least seen in a photo, but I wasn't sure who I might run into there and scare.

Walking it is then, besides, I could use the fresh air and seeing the city one last time would be meaningful and special.

On my way.

I hit send and then powered the screen off, placing it into one of my zipper pockets in my jacket. Turning around and moving to the kitchen table, I took a piece of paper and a pen, writing:

Off to the Dv8 Strip Club.

Should be back in a few hours as it's almost 10 PM now.

See you soon!

Can't wait to see where the road will take us.

Love,

Eris

Signing my name and placing the paper on the granite countertop of the island, I headed toward the front door, opening and closing it silently behind me. I locked the door, the click sliding into place as I placed the key into my other jacket pocket, making my way down the stairs to the lower level of the apartment complex.

Would I need to bring anything with me when Maverick and I set out to see the world? I'm sure he's already thought it out and I'd trust him, he's seen much more of the world than I have, chaining myself to this one city my entire existence on this planet.

Paris, I want to see Paris.

Opening the front glass door, I stepped out onto the cement sidewalk, the streetlamps glowing brightly. The air was fresh and crisp, the coolness of it taking away all the butterflies I had in my stomach of the changes that were about to happen. It was weird, moving away from everything that I had become so used to, but with Maverick, anything seemed possible.

The wind blew my hair in the tight ponytail, stuffing my hands into the pockets and absentmindedly holding my phone and key in each hand.

"Maybe we can travel to Verona, I've heard Italy is beautiful this time of year. Such history the walls of that city must have," I spoke to myself, my mind racing with the possibility of maybe getting a chance to visit the great pyramids of Egypt or the Great Wall of China.

The sign flickered on for the Dv8 Strip Club, the neon lights flashing with a welcoming I'd missed. It would be the last time I walked through those doors and I wanted to make the most of it with the family I had grown so close to over the years. I could hear the loud music, the bass pounding through the glass and radiating into the streets, the neon lights streaming through the club.

It was perfect.

The only thing I couldn't quite understand was why Teddy looked as though he were sleeping against the entrance door.
