Chapter 17 ∣  I'll Find You

-Maverick

I felt like shit for looking into her past when she clearly stated that she didn't want to tell me. Knowing Eris for the short amount of time that I did, I wanted to give her some space to calm down so that when I did speak with her, she wouldn't want to drive a stake through my heart or chop my head off.

I know she doesn't want anyone, including myself to pity her...but I don't think she's ever fully healed from the actions of Kalyn and Keegan. She's never spoken to anyone about it and just bottles up the pain inside...until it exploded when I found out on my own. I'd gladly be the ear to listen to all her pain and sadness, wanting to help her as best as I could.

It hurt me...that she hurt.

It shouldn't. But it did.

I'd never felt even the slightest concern for anyone else well-being, except for my own.

Not until I met Eris. She's not like anyone I've ever met before. Though she portrays the strong, sexy, defiant, persona of someone who's never been hurt, in reality...I'd never seen anyone else so fragile and broken.

Maybe she isn't my true love by blood...but I wouldn't mind getting to know her to see if what we have, might be more than just a one-time fling.

Heh, I have so much sympathy for the one who is destined to be with me.

No. I can't do that. I won't bring her into my chaos of life. She deserves more than that. Running with me would put her on radar that she so desperately tries to hide from. I can't change who I am or what I've done...but maybe I could find a new future in Eris. It's a long shot, but I just might have a chance.

It was about 11:00 PM and the Dv8 Strip Club would be in full swing by now, Eris taking center stage and seducing another bunch of naive humans. I really wanted to see my little vixen, just to see how she's doing...

Please don't be too pissed off at me...

Thoughts of pleasuring her only had my mind wandering into places it shouldn't. I knew it could be a very long time before Eris truly trusted in me enough to fully submit to me...if that's what she decided to do.

If she forgave me.

After gaining access to her place of work, the emphatic music was seriously going to cause me to go deaf with how loud they played it. I mean come on...guy with sensitive hearing that wants to participate.

That's odd.

I couldn't smell her.

Just as I was about to take a seat and wait for her performance, I decided against it and attempted to find her boss. Luckily, it wasn't too hard to track him down, noticing he was leaning against the bar, talking a little too loudly to one of Eris' co-workers. It appeared that he was very angry, and this human was bearing the brunt of his wrath.

"Where. Is. She?! Salana...you better not be covering for her ass again!" Brice yelled at the stripper as she cowered away in fear, timidly shifting her weight from one foot to the other.

Covering for her?

"Excuse me," I started, drawing Brice's and the stripper's attention.

When Brice saw me, he immediately smiled as I had paid quite a bit to get her off for the night. Luckily, I had grown up with parents who were well off.

No, I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth. Ha-ha...silver...but, they had taken care of mostly everything for me when I was younger.

"Where is Eris?" I asked politely, the stripper beside him giving me a sideways glance before hurriedly taking off. It must have relieved her that now she wasn't under the scrutinizing eyes of Brice.

Brice shook his head and called the bartender over. He whispered something to him, and two shots were placed on the bar in front of him. Taking both into each of his hands, Brice turned towards me, holding out his left hand as he offered me the alcohol. When I held my hand up to signal a "no", he shrugged his shoulders and pounded both back before slamming the shot glasses onto the bar.

I don't care to drink whatsoever. It hindered more senses than I would like.

"She never showed up for work," Brice narrowed his eyes before stating, "For a moment, I thought she had run off with you...but seeing as though you are here, I guess that sentiment is out of the question. Salana," Brice pointed towards the stripper he had been speaking to, who was now dancing on the center stage in Eris' spot, "covered for her in the past when she ran off from work and I thought she might be doing it again."

I cringed for a moment, knowing the reason she left early that night was on my account as I chased her ass all the way home.

And what a lovely ass it had been to chase if I might add.

"Salana hasn't heard a thing and I can tell when she's lying...she's not. Unfortunately," Brice took another shot into his right hand, "Eris won't even answer her phone and she always answer me when I text her."

"Hold up," I placed my hand on his forearm as he went to down the third shot that I had seen him drink, "Drinking isn't going to help and you're only going to cause a problem for your establishment."

Now I have consideration for this human and if he manages to drown himself in alcohol...Eris, what the fuck are you doing to me?

Brice was considering my words, placing the shot glass back down on the bar and nodding. He's not that stupid...alcohol poisoning is frightening, and I don't think he wanted to risk his liver any longer, "Look, I don't know what kind relationship the two of you have-"

"I-"

"And I don't care. Just please make sure she is okay..." Brice interrupted me, "She talks to you. I haven't seen the spark that lights up in her eyes like it does since she met you. Never. Please...I'm worried about her."

Her boss cares for her like a father figure. That's surprising.

Eh, at least she never has to worry about meeting mine.

"I'll go check her apartment," I nodded my agreement, trying to not let the smirk creep onto my face at the sound of his words.

She really does feel something towards me.

**

Something was off as I approached the apartment complex, she resided in. The scents of many lingered in the air, including Eris'. It was faint, but it was there. Instead of barging through her bedroom window and scaring her to death, I decided to take the stairs. As I came to her floor, I noticed her bedroom door was wide open.

Odd...

"Eris?" I asked, taking a few steps into her living room. Silence returned my question. Only once I had focused, could I take in Declan's scent. My eyes snapped open, stepping outside into the hallway and noticing that their scents also drifted up the staircase.

My blood ran cold as I rushed up the stairs, coming to the rooftop door within thirty seconds. After opening the door, I stepped out onto the flat roof, my eyes searching for anything. It didn't take me that long as Eris' scent was the strongest at the edge of the building.

She didn't...did she jump?

My eyes found her leather jacket on the ground, the sound of a vibration coming from the right pocket. I knelt and withdrew her phone and sure enough, she hand acquired seventeen texts and voice messages, mainly from Brice and Salana.

He couldn't have...

"Fuck...my scent is on you my little vixen..." my blood became like ice, my heart beginning to hurt as I realized what happened, "Declan thinks you're my love...he wants revenge for Willow's death. He wants my "beloved"...and he thinks that's you. He's going to use you to hurt me...well...consider me hurt."

"I'm so sorry for dragging you into this...I never meant for this to happen to you. This has nothing to do with you..." I felt regret and remorse filling every ounce of my being, trying not to lose control. I couldn't, I had to focus in order to track Eris down.

Picking up her leather jacket and holding it close to me, I breathed in her deep rosemary scent, calming me slightly as I whispered, "I'll find you."
