What is a story without a cover? Sorry, I don't know the answer, but the old saying 'a picture says a thousand words' still applies today and can help us draw in readers.

If the eyes are the window into your soul, then the cover is the window into your book. It should give the reader some idea of what the book is about. If it has a soccer ball, it probably includes soccer. If there is a shirtless guy and an attractive lady, there's a good chance it's romance. If it has a rotting person crawling out of a grave, it is probably not romance.

So pick relevant details, but also make sure your cover stands out in the crowd. Put your cover beside several others and see if your eyes skim over it. If so, why? What do the other covers have that captures your attention more?

A word about copyright (another evil word...), copying images off of the internet for a Wattpad cover usually isn't too bad, but you MUST cite where you got it from. Credit is due where credit is due. The wisest course of action is to look for 'free backgrounds' or 'free images' (read the fine print because Google isn't too smart here).

Or look for a cover maker. Quite a few people on Wattpad are extremely talented and will happily make a cover for you in exchange for a follow, shout-out, and/or credit in the summary (try searching for 'Covers', 'Graphic Artist', or 'Covershop' on Wattpad and check if they're still active before making a request).

Most of the time, a Wattpad cover artist will want their names in your summary or Author's Note, which is standard practice on Wattpad.

Take a walk through a book store – which covers grab your attention and why? This will help you learn to create covers that will draw in readers.

Did you win a small writing contest and received an award sticker to add to your cover?

Congratulations! There are several ways to add an award sticker to your cover. You can bribe a cover maker to do it for you or do it in various photo softwares like Canva, picmonkey, etc.

Don't forget to save and update your cover.
