~Tiffany's POV~

How could he do that? What does he think I am? I am not his toy to play with. I walked back and forth in my bedroom, the music blasting around Jess and myself.

“Who the fuck does he think he is?” I yelled into thin air.

“You are talking about Paul, right?” Jess asked sitting on the bed in front of my laptop.

“Keep up Jess. Yes, I’m talking about Paul.” I said stopping for a second to look at her before pacing again. “He thinks I’m a slut. The nerve of that bastard.”

“Did he actually call you a slut?” she asked shocked.

“I bit my bottom lip nervously. “No, not really. But he’s the same as the others.”

“What do you mean?”

“He wants ‘something’,” I said showing the inverted commas with my fingers. “-from me.”

“How do you know?”

“Come on Jess. Why else would he ask me out for a coffee?”

“He asked you out for a coffee?” She furrowed her brows.“How?”

“He came here and my dad interrogated him. After that I said I’d go with him.”

“Wait a second. So, what you’re saying is that he drove all the way to your house and withstood you dad stare down, all for acoffee with you?” her face expression turned mushy and love-struck. “That’s the sweetest thing I’ve heard. Well since school started at least.”

“How is that in any way sweet?” I questioned. By this time I had already stopped pacing and was sitting on the bed next to Jess.

“I mean, you don’t find that a lot. Most guys don’t give a shit about what we want. So, Paul asking you out in front of your dad shows that he cares way more about you that just to get into your pants.”

I scoffed and rolled my eyes. “You’re insane. He doesn’t care about me like that. Just because he said that he’s been interested in me for a while, doesn’t mean that he likes me.”

“He said that?” she said looking up from the laptop. “Wow Tiff, I didn’t peg you for stupid.”

“What do you mean?”

“The guy confessed to you and you were dumb enough to walk out on him.”

I wanted to say something but nothing came out. It felt as if there was a lump in my throat. I forced myself to swallow it and blinked at Jess.

“So, you’re saying that he actually like, like’s me?”

“Of course.” She nodded. “You’re so caught up with the whole‘everybody has an ulterior motive’ thing, that you didn’t realize that the person who truly cared, was under your nose the entire time.”

For the second time in five minutes, I found myself speechless.

I was brought out of my trance by the sound of Jess’ phone ringing. She picked it up of the side of the bed and looked down at the caller ID.

“It’s my mom. I’m going now, so I’ll see you sometime.” She walked to the door but paused before leaving. “Think about what I said Tiff. It’s not everyone that thinks of you as a slut.”

I forced a smile out but at this point I probably looked constipated. After she left I fell onto my bed. I looked up at the ceiling and felt so small all of a sudden.

If what Jess said was true, then that meant that I’ve been blind this whole time. I’ve been so caught up in ruining other people’s lives, that I never gave myself a chance. A chance to prove that I could help instead of hurt. To love instead of hate.

I reached for my phone and started typing out a message to Paul, only to stop halfway through. I didn’t know what I was going to say or how I was going to explain myself. He was one of the only people that didn’t hate me and now he joined the club. I was officially hated by the entire school. My life was a total wreck.

~Skye's POV~

“I don’t want to fucking try again!” I screamed as Sam moved to open his mouth. The only reason I knew he was going to say that, was because he had been saying it since the day we left the hospital.

“But Skye…you’ll never know.”

“And I don’t want to.” I said turning away from him. I ran down the stairs and stopped in the kitchen. I picked up the coffee pot and started to pour myself a cup.

“Skye, what if this could turn out to be a good thing?” he said suddenly appearing in front of me.

“Shit!” I said as some of the coffee spilled on my hand.“Don’t scare me like that. We’re done with this conversation Sam. I don’t want to talk about it anymore.”

I heard him sigh. “If you both love each other and you both know it, why should you stay separated? It’s not right.”

I rubbed my hand over my forehead and went over to Sam.“You’re still a kid. I am too. That’s why I don’t want to do this. I don’t understand anything and I’ve already gotten into so much shit. I don’t want to cause any more trouble than I already have.”

“But life would be life if you didn’t take chances. You have to take the risk Skye. that’s all I’m saying.”

“I told you I’m done Sam. Don’t you understand English?” I said plopping onto a chair. “And it’s not my risk to take. I’ve made up my part of the bed. That’s all there is to it.”

“Skye…” he said looking heart-broken.

“Shut up Sam. It’s over. Jake and I are not getting back together. Not now and nowhere in the near future.” I didn’t know who was more surprised at my words. Sam, or me.

It was silent for a while until we heard the doorbell. I got up off my seat and walked to the door. It was probably Hailey, coming over for some video games.

I opened the door and the face I was looking at was not the one I was expecting to see. “J-Jake, what are you doing here?”

Even with two crutches at his side, he was still intimidating. “I was just in the neighborhood and I thought that I should stop by.”

“Yea? Uhh, now’s not really a good time. I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to be here.” I moved to close the door. “I think you should leave.”

The door was almost completely closed when Jake jammed one of his crutches in the opening. I heard a sound on the other side of the door and a groan. When I looked, Jake was lying on the ground, pain clear in his eyes.

“Are you insane? Why did you do that?” I yelled as I knelt down next to him. “Sam! Come out here and give me a hand!”

“Now can I come inside?” I narrowed my eyes at him. Sam appeared in the doorway and his face lit up.

“Jake! You’re back.”

“Hey kiddo. Why don’t you come give me a hand over here?” we helped Jake up and into the house.

After making himself comfortable on the sofa and just about claiming ownership over everything in sight, I finally got fed up. I cleared my throat causing him to look up.

“Something wrong with your throat?” he asked jokingly.

“Not funny. What are you doing here?”

“Hey now, I’m the one who’s supposed to be pissed. After all, I was the one who was cheated on.”

I looked away. “If this is your way of getting back at me, you’re sick. I’m not falling for your games.”

“Who said anything about games?” he said taking a sip of his soda.

“Then why are you here?”

“To chill?” he said.

“You need help. I don’t want you to be here. I’m calling Paul to come pick you up.” I walked away before he had a chance to protest.

I heard Paul’s phone ringing, but there was no answer.“Dammit.”

“What, you’re trying to get rid of me that bad?” Jake said, leaning on his crutches at the door.

I glared at him and walked away back into the living room.“Skye, isn’t this great? Now you and Jake can patch things up.”

I looked down at Sam and scowled. “No, this is a catastrophe. All I wanted was a nice quiet night to myself, and I just had to develop a pest problem.”

“You were talking about me?” Jake said stepping into the room whilst taking a bite from a banana. I growled at him. “Whoa, calm down tiger. There’s enough of Jake to go around.”

He winked at me and I rolled my eyes. “Asshole.”

“Exactly.” He wiggled his eyebrows.

“Pervert.”

“Only for you babe.” I had a sudden intake of breath. All those times he called me ‘babe’ and meant it, now he was just being a total prick.

“I need some fresh air.” I said walking out of the room.

“Yea, I know. It’s hard to resist my hotness.” He said flexing his muscles.

“You’re so full of yourself.”

“Not as full as you’re going to be.” He winked again. My eyes widened at his comment and I rushed quickly out of the house.

There was absolutely no way I was going to be able to handle this. My life could not get any worse. My parents died, I met a total jackass-who ended up being my boyfriend-, an old crush reappeared and then I cheat on my boyfriend with him. And now for the icing on the cake, my now ex-boyfriend is hanging around my house thinking that everything is all peachy. Was I imagining all of this, or was I actually crazy?

“Skye?” I turned around and saw Jake limping towards me.

“Go awa- where are your crutches?” I said hurrying over to him.

“Chill dude, it’s cool. I hardly need them anymore.” He said sitting down on the porch bench.

“Then why did you ask for help? And why did you pretend to be hurt earlier?” I was starting to get furious.

“I wanted to talk to you. I had a feeling you wouldn’t want to.” he said shrugging.

“Why? You don’t owe me anything and sure as hell don’t owe you.” I said looking at him.

“Yes you do Skye.”

I gave him a puzzled look. “I do?”

“Yes. You owe me an explanation as to why you did what you did.”

I opened my mouth but nothing came out. My eyes started to tear up. I wiped the tears away and looked down at the ground.

“It’s okay Skye, I’ll listen. I won’t judge you.” He looked sincere.

“I-I didn’t mean to.” I said shaking my head. “It was never supposed to happen.”

“I know. But I want to know why you let it.”

“It was so sudden. I was going to go to your house, but then I had already told Steve,” Jake tensed at the mention of Steve’s name. “-that I’d meet him.”

He nodded for me to continue, so I did. “When I got there, I wanted to make it quick so that I could leave again. You know, so that we could get the whole conversation over with. What I wasn’t expecting was for him to tell me that he liked me and that he wanted to be with me. Of course I told him that I was with you and I didn’t feel the same way about him. One thing led to another and he kissed me and I couldn’t bring myself to stop him.”

He closed his eyes and turned his head away from me. “Jake you have to know. I wouldn’t do anything to hurt you intentionally.”

“But you did Skye.” he turned back to me and I could have sworn that I saw tears pooling in his eyes. “The way I felt about you…it- I have never felt that way about anyone before. I was shattered. You betrayed me.”

“I know. And I would do anything to turn back the clock and undo what I did.”

“But you can’t Skye. What’s done is done. Now we both have to live with it.”

“Jake.”

“Leave it. The past is the past. We can’t change it, but we can hope for a better future.” He sort of smiled at me.

Was Jake implying that we had a chance? I wouldn’t want to hurt him again, but it was good to know that there was still hope.

“So,” he said biting his bottom lip. “-about what you said at the hospital…”

“Oh, please don’t even start.”

“So you didn’t mean it?” he looked disappointed.

“No, no. of course I did. I do. It’s just that,-”

“That what?” he said cutting me off.

“Nothing.” I licked my lips nervously. Why was my heart beating so fast? I shouldn’t be feeling this way. After all, I was the bad guy.

“Do you still?” he said coming closer.

“Do I still what?”

“Love me.” Somehow I knew that it would come to this. Wasn’t there anyway for me to find a loop hole?

“Y-Yes.” I said after clearing my throat. “Yes, I do.”

“Good, me too.” He smiled down at me and I gave him a weak smile in return. Looking into his eyes after so long made me forget how mesmerizing they were.

He leaned closer and I stayed on my spot. Not moving closer, but not moving away either. Jake closed his eyes and when his lips were an inch away from mine, I did the same. Our lips were about to touch, just a few more centimeters, not even that much. I felt my hand trail up his torso. Our lips brushed against each other’s and it took all my strength to push Jake away.

I covered my mouth and looked away. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have led you on. I can’t allow this to happen.”

“Skye, you’re kind of ruining a moment over here.” Jake said sounding annoyed.

“I know and I’m sorry. I care about you too much to hurt you again.”

“And what else do you think you’re doing to me right now?”he said.

“I would only be taking advantage of you. I’m sorry Jake, but I think this time, you really should leave.” I grabbed his crutches that were leaning against the door frame and handed them over to him.

“When this weekend’s over, don’t be thinking that I’ll act as if I know you.” He said grabbing the crutches out of my grasp and limping down the steps.

When he got to his car he took one glance behind him before getting in and speeding off. I should have figured that he was recovered. Someone whose legs were injured couldn’t drive.

When I got into the house I caught Sam running from the window and jumping back onto the sofa. “Could you for once in your life not say ‘I told you so’ and just be there to comfort me?”

He nodded and patted the vacant seat next to him. I went over and leaned my head on his shoulder. I may have looked like a girl to anyone else, but I couldn’t resist the urge to cry my heart out.
