~Skye~

I walked into the school feeling like I wanted to throw up. I felt sick. I could have sworn that everyone’s eyes were on me. In reality though, no one knew I was there. I was just another face in the crowd. It was all my imagination. And yet it was still running wild, even in the situation I was stuck in. Today was going to be the worst day in my existence.

“Bitch!” I heard Blake scream at someone. My head snapped up so fast, just in time to see Hailey slap Tiffany in the face.

I rushed towards them. “Guys what happened?” Tiffany held on her cheek that was turning red quickly and I was sure I saw a smug smile on her face.

“Skye, please. Get out of here. Go home now.” Blake said pulling me back.

“No. I want to know what happened.” I said fighting against him.

“I warned you. I told you all to back off and give me back what was rightfully mine. You didn’t listen and now you’ll have to face the music.” Tiffany said laughing out loud.

“What is she talking about Blake?” I asked looking around me. This time everybody really was staring at me. They looked at me like I was someone that should be pitied.

“Skye.” Hailey said reaching out to me.

I saw Jake come around the corner. I ran up to him, but he looked at me like he was scared of something. “Jake, what’s gotten into you?”

He didn’t say anything. Instead he looked away. “I’m sorry Skye. I didn’t mean it.”

“Then why the fuck did you say it?” Blake screamed at him.

I was even more confused than what I was five minutes ago. “If someone doesn’t stop talking now, I’m going to find out myself. And trust me; you wouldn’t want to see my reaction.”

A girl who I’ve never met before came up to me. She had a cell phone in her hand and a YouTube video loaded on it. Someone tried to pull her back but Hailey stopped them. “He will find out anyway. It’s better that he does now…before it’s too late.”

“Too late for what? Guys you’re scaring me.” I took the phone from the girl and played the video. I saw Jake and Paul talking in the hallway. I couldn’t hear properly so I brought the phone closer to my face.

“Jake, what were you doing back there?” Paul asked pointing behind him.

“Not much.” Jake said shrugging. “What’s it to you?”

“You’re my pal. I need to know these things.” Paul said patting him on the shoulder. “So what are you going to do with this one? Another fling?”

I barely saw any emotion on Jake face. “Yea, whatever.”

“Dude, seriously? I mean, this guy doesn’t look like those easy to get types.”

“Paul, just let me do what I need to. I’ve got to go.” Jake said and walked off.

I switched the video off and closed the phone. “I’ve seen enough.” I said giving the phone back to the girl.

“Skye, I’m sorry.” Jake said grabbing on to my arm. I snatched it back just as fast as he put it there.

“You’ve said all you needed to say Jake. I don’t think I want to hear anything that comes out of your mouth.”

“Skye please let me explain.”

“No, I won’t. Is that all I was to you? Another fling? That’s just great. I mean, I always thought I wouldn’t mean anything to anyone, but then you came along and I thought that had finally changed. It turns out I meant absolutely nothing to you.” I said staring him directly in the eyes.

“That’s not true. I really liked you.” He said trying to catch hold of my arm.

“I swear if you try to touch me again, I’ll chop your hand off.” I said shrugging away from him. “If you really liked me you wouldn’t have hurt me. It’s over Jake.”

I turned around and ran as fast as my legs would carry me. Damn son of a bitch. And it wasn’t Jake who I was referring to. I was the stupid one for falling for his lies. I shouldn’t have trusted him. My dad was right. I’m not worthy of anyone’s love. I’m just trash that no one would bother picking up.

I woke up and stared into a bright light. I had a headache the size of the moon. What the fuck happened to me? I tried to get up but my limps seemed to have lost all its functions.

“What happened?” I asked rubbing my head.

“You ran into a wall.” Blake said making football movements. “Head first.”

“Really? Why would I do such a stupid thing?” I asked rubbing my head.

“You don’t remember?” he asked coming closer to me.

As soon as he said that, everything that happened today came rushing into my head as if a dam just exploded. I remembered the video I watched and how Jake wanted to ‘explain’ why he did what he did. I even remember running away after breaking up with him.

“Fuck.” I said looking to my side. I forced myself to sit and rejected the help Blake offered to help me get up. “How could he do that to me?”

“So you do remember. I was hoping that head crash would make you lose your memory.” Blake said shrugging.

I looked at him with narrowed eyes. “Are you serious? Those types of things only happen in movies. This is real life. I’ve just got a killer headache is all. Do you have some aspirin?”

“So what if I like comparing reality to movies? They’re better than the crap we have to deal with anyway.” Blake said moving to sit at his desk.

“You have a wile imagination.” I said shaking my head. Or at least doing a very bad job at it. “Uhh, Blake, could I stay here tonight? I don’t feel like going home.”

“Yea sure. I guess it’s a good thing I have two beds in my room. You can have that one; I’ll make myself comfortable over there.” He said patting the bed opposite mine.

“Dude, I’m starving. Do you have any food?” I asked hearing my stomach growling.

“My mom went out with her friends for the night, so no, we don’t have food. I’ll order a pizza or two.” He said picking his phone up from the desk.

Two large pizzas and a bottle of Coke later, I was practically passed out on the bed. Mt stomach felt so full, anyone would swear that I swallowed an entire horse. I yawned and covered myself with the blanket at the foot of the bed. Boy was I tired. Today was rough, and I hoped that tomorrow wouldn’t be as bad too.

I kept shifting on the bed. It felt like I was lost in an unknown world, yet something was holding me back. It wouldn’t let me go. And the harder I fought, the harder it held on to me.

“You’re not worthy of anyone’s love, Skye.” I heard my dad say.

“You were just a fling. You meant nothing to me.” Jake’s voice echoed in my head.

“We don’t care about you. You’re worthless.” They both said together.

I fought harder. So hard that I was finally able to break free of the chains linking me to them. To those people that never cared for me. They used me and expected me to be okay with it.

My body started to shake even more than before. Was I having a seizure? “Skye.” I heard my name in the background. “Wake up.”

I shook a few more times before I was knocked back into consciousness. When I opened my eyes, I was staring into the greenest eyes I have ever seen. “Blake, I was trying to sleep, you know?”

“You were scaring me you were hawking continuously. I though you were sick.” He said lightly punching my arm.

“It’s good that you woke me up then. I have nightmares all the time, so I wanted to get away from them. I said sitting up and rubbing my eyes. “Thank you.”

“For what?” his face looked puzzled.

“For accepting me and not thinking that I’m…worthless.” I said looking directly at him.

“I told you already. You’re my friend. I don’t care if you look like a donkey or smell like a dog. I’ll still think you’re cool.” He said smiling at me.

“Thanks a lot for the ‘kind’ words.” I said not looking amused.

“I couldn’t resist. You looked so serious. I had to find a way to make you laugh.”

That got me going. I burst out laughing. “Well, it barely worked.”

“Hey, what can I say? I’m awesome.” He said spreading his arms out to his side.

“Whatever.” I said getting up off the bed. I grabbed my jeans and shoes, since I slept in my boxers and t-shirt last night.

“Where are you going?” Blake asked following me.

“You do remember that I don’t live here right? I have to get home. I’m already late for school.” I looked at my watch.

“You’re more than three hours late. It’s pointless going now.” He said trying to convince me to stay.

“I need to get my stuff. We can hang out all day if you want. But I need some stuff from my room.”

“Won’t John or Vanessa see you?”

“They went away for the week. I guess finding out that I’m gay took a toll on them.”

“Oh, I’m sorry.”

“No, it’s fine. I need some time alone to think too. I’m glad Sam understands that.” I said pulling up my jeans. “Could you give me a ride?”

He nodded and walked out of the room. “I’ll go clean up first, and then we can go.”

~Jake~

“No. You don’t understand.” I said screaming at Tiffany. “You had no fucking right to do that. And now I may have lost the most important thing that ever happened to me.”

“Jake. You have to see that this was better for all of us.” She said trying to convince me.

I turned around and stared at her. I couldn’t believe the words that were coming out of her mouth. “Are you out of your Goddamn mind woman?”

“No, in fact I’m not.” She said folding her arms across her chest. “You can’t hate me for making things right.”

“You fucking destroyed my life! How the hell is that making things right?”

“I got what I wanted.”

“And I’m sure you must be jumping for joy on the inside.”

“No, actually I’m not. Blake is still with that bitch.”

“Tiffany. You are the bitch. No, you’re worse than a bitch. I don’t even think they have a name for your kind. How could you do that to me? I had a good thing, and you ruined it all.”

“I wasn’t the one who said all those things. You were.” She said pointing a finger at me.

“That video was edited and you know it. Everything was mixed up. I cared about Skye, and now he’s gone. This is all your fault. I swear Tiffany, you deserve what’s coming to you” I said looking her n the eye.

“Is that a threat, Jake?” she stepped forward. No less than a few inches away from me.

“No, it’s not. I’m just saying that karma has a way of getting back at people.” I said and grabbed my stuff. “I didn’t do anything bad to Skye. I didn’t use him, I never cheated on him. I never even thought about other people. I loved him and now I’m the one who has to prove my loyalty. He might never trust me again. I hope for your sake, that they have mercy on you.”

I ran out of her house and climbed into my car. It wasn’t too long before I was standing at Skye’s doorstep. I walked up to the door and rang the bell. I felt like an idiot. Here I was coming to my former ‘unofficial’ boyfriend’s house to beg for his forgiveness. As I said before, I didn’t do anything wrong. In fact, this had to be the most honest and faithful relationship I have ever been in.

Instead of Skye answering the door, his brother did. I stepped back a few paces. The dude was small, but at this point I was afraid of anyone that happened to be on Skye’s side.

“Sam, is Skye around?” I asked still a little more than nervous.

“No, he’s not. I don’t think you have the right showing up here Jake. Don’t you think you’ve caused enough trouble as it is?” He asked looking up at me.

I was about to explain my part of the story to him when I heard a car pull up behind me. When I turned around I saw Skye getting out of Blake’s car with Blake hot on his trail.

“Jake, what are you doing here?” Skye asked glaring at me. Blake looked like he wanted to beat the bejeesuz out of me.

“I need to talk to you.”

“Well I have nothing to say to you.” He attempted to walk past me but I managed to block him.

“Skye, please give me a chance to explain.” I begged. If I had no pride or dignity I would have been on my knees. I didn’t do it because he might call me a loser for doing that. It was kind of worse than him avoiding me.

“If you don’t get off my property in the next thirty seconds; I’m going to call the police.”

I took that as my cue to leave. Fuck this shit. Usually by this time I would have given up already, but I just can’t. Skye is way too different for me to give up without a fight. I wasn’t going to let some slut decide my life. If my life was going to end up ruined, it would be because of my own stupid mistakes.

“Fine, I’m leaving. But I will get that chance Skye. That’s a promise.” I ran back to my car and decided to go to the only place that I could think of where no one would judge me or call me a douche.

Drinking the last bit of my fourth beer for the night, I thought about what would or could have been. Would things still be the same if I never said those things, or if that video was never taken?

I stared out over the cliff at the stars. They were so lucky. People watched then all night long but never criticized them. They valued the stars’ existence. The most memorable things in life happened right beneath them. And here I was sitting on the hood of my car, wishing that my life could be even a fraction like theirs. That way, I’d be certain that people would accept me no matter what happened.

I was brought out of my thoughts by the sound of my phone ringing inside the car. I got off the hood so that I could answer it. When I checked the caller I.D, I saw that it was my mom. I sighed at the fact that she knew the exact moment when to call.

“Hey mom.” I was pretty sure that she could hear how miserable my voice sounded. “Is everything okay?”

“No Jacob, it’s not. What’s going on with you? You’ve been quit rebellious these past few days. Are you okay honey?” she sounded more worried than usual. “Where are you? I’ll come get you.”

I knew my mom had some idea that I drank. She probably knew that I was on my way to going far beyond my limits. I glanced at the rest of the six-pack in my car. I wouldn’t want her to see me like this. She may have known, but some things were better left unsaid.

“I’m fine mom. I need to come home to fetch a few things. We can talk then.” I said with a sudden idea popping into my mind.

“What do you mean? Jacob you’re starting to scare me.”

“Mom, I’ll see you later.” I said before hanging up the phone.

If I wanted to give everybody time to relax and come to terms with what happened, I would need to give them space. I was sure that my grandmother would gladly accept a surprise visit from her favorite grandson.

~Sam~

“I don’t think he did it.” I said pacing up and down in my bedroom.

“What do you mean he didn’t do it? I saw the video, the proof was right there.” Skye said standing up from my sofa.

“I meant that in today’s world, people would do anything to get back at others. You know, to make look like the bad guy.”

“Are you seriously trying to defend Jake?” Skye looked beyond angry. I took a step back for precautions. “I can’t believe that you would do something like this. How dare you betray me?”

“I’m not defending him…much. I’m just asking you to hear his side of the story. You asked me not to talk to him, and not to associate with him at all. I actually liked the guy. Why do you have to be so stubborn?”

“I am not stubborn. If you talk to Jake, or even look in his direction, this,” he pointed between the two of us. “will be the last time I ever talk to you.”

“Skye, you can’t do that.”

“Watch me.” he stormed out of the room and I flinched as the door slammed shut.

I rested my forehead against the door. Why was Skye so damn stubborn? How could I even be related to him? I turned around abruptly and reached for my phone. I searched for the contact and pressed dial. After two rings, he answered.

“Hello?” he sounded a bit busy.

“Hey Jake, I can’t talk here. Do you have a few minutes? We need to talk.”

“Why don’t I like the sound of that?”

“It’s important. Please?” I was practically begging him at this point.

“Fine, I’m in a hurry, so this better be quick. Meet me at the diner in fifteen minutes.” He said then hung up.

I scrambled around my room searching for a clean t-shirt. Heaven alone knew when last I cleaned out my closet. I found one and hurriedly put it on.

I was about to make a run for it down the stairs, when Skye blocked my way. “Skye, move. I’m in a hurry.”

“Where are you off to Sam?” he asked licking the ice-cream of his spoon. I knew what he was trying to do. He was trying to act cool, so that I’ll start feeling jittery. Well, it was sure as hell working.

“I…uhh…I’ve got some things to take care of.” I stammered.

“Like what?” he started licking that damn spoon again. Why was he tormenting me like this? Acting cool, as if nothing was wrong in the world.

“School work.” I walked past him. “I’ll be back soon.”

I was halfway down the stairs by now. Yes! I mentally thrust my fist in the air. I couldn’t believe that I got past him.

“With who?” Fuck. What the hell was wrong with this dude?

I slowly turned around. “Dude, what’s with the twenty questions? You don’t need to know what I do every minute. It’s none of your business, so get out of my grill.”

He stared at me in shock. I took that as an opportunity to get the hell out of here. I walked down the remainder of the stairs as fast as I could. I grabbed my jacket and jumped into the first cab that came by.

“You’re late.” Jake said as I walked into the diner. “Thirty minutes to be exact.”

“Don’t go all drama queen on me. It’s not I could drive myself here.” I pulled out a chair and propped myself in it. “And it wasn’t like I could ask Skye to give me a ride either. What was I going to say; hey Skye, can you drive me over to the diner, I’ve got to talk to your ex-boyfriend who allegedly broke your heart.”

“It’s not my fault that his heart was broken. I didn’t break it.” He stated.

“He seemed pretty bummed about it to me.”

“I told you it wasn’t me!” he slammed his fists on the table in anger. We got a few weird looks from the people around us. I smiled at them weakly to show that Jake meant no harm.

“Then tell me why he never came home that night. Or why he wouldn’t speak to you. Never mind the fact that he has been crying his heart out in his room every minute.” I leaned over the table at looked him straight in the eye.

“He’s been crying every minute?” his tone was softer now.

I nodded. “Please, this is the only chance you’ll get, since everybody just about hates you right now. Tell me why. Tell me…the truth.”

“Some of those things in the video- I admit- I said it. But I swear, I never said it in that order.” He started. “Paul, my best friend, was on my case about why I was talking to Skye and what my plans with him were.”

Jake went silent. I leaned my in turned my head to the side. “And?”

“I agreed with whatever he said. I didn’t mean to. He wouldn’t stop bothering me. And I told him that I would take care of it and that he had to let me do what I needed to.”
