EDWARD'S POV

"Right then, Evie, I'll be back by evening." I say to Evelyn.

She comes up to me and gives me a side hug, "Alright," She smiles, "Be safe, Ed." She says softly.

I return her smile, "I will. Let me just check on mum and dad before I leave."

Evelyn nods.

I walk up to my parents room. We lived in a small building, in a small flat, with two tiny rooms in it and small toilet. Since I was the only one who earned a living in the house, this was all I could afford with being a laborer.

I knock on their door gently.

"Come in." My dad says. I enter and see my mum laying down on the bed with the blanket on top off her. My mum is a paralysis patient. She got a stroke, two years back which paralyzed the complete left side of her body. My dad being the loving husband he is, retired so that he could take care of my mum.

My dad was reading a book sitting on the chair.

"Hi dad, Hi mum. I'm just going to get some groceries, I'll be back an hour or so. Alright?" I smile at my dad.

My dad looks up and smiles, "Okay. Don't forget to pick up your mum's medicines."

I nod and I go up to my mum and kiss her on the forehead, smiling, "Love you, mum." She couldn't talk as well. Whilst knowing it was due to her being paralyzed, it still made me feel heartbroken, not being able to listen to your mum's voice.

I hadn't realized I was crying until I felt a tear fall down my cheek. I wipe it off and say to my dad, "Love you."

"Love you, too." He says.

I exit the room and leave the house.

Although, these past two years had been very hard for us, due to my mum getting paralyzed. Evelyn was by our side, helping all of us, especially my mum, through it all.

EVELYN'S POV

I filled the pot with water and put it on the stove to boil. As I was was waiting for the water to boil, someone knocked on the front door.

I went to open the door to see my neighbor, Lizzy standing with a jar in her hand.

"Hello, Lizzy. How are you doing?" I ask her with a smile.

"Hello, Evelyn. I'm doing well, thank you. How about you?" Lizzy smiles.

"I'm good, thank you for asking. What brings you here?" I ask her.

"Oh, I just wanted to give you this jar of cookies that I made myself. I made loads so I thought I'll give you some." She says excitingly.

"Aww, thank you, Lizzy. That's very kind of you," Then as if I had completely forgotten that we were standing, I invited her in. "Oh my, forgive me. I completely forgot to invite you in. Come on in."

Lizzy smiled widely.

-

"Okay, goodbye, Lizzy. See you soon." As soon as I shut the front door, I go to the kitchen to get myself a glass of water.

But my steps come to a halt before I could reach the kitchen which was right next to Ed and I's room. My eyes go wide open as I see endless amount of smoke around me and see the fire coming out of the kitchen.

It was absolutely terrifying because the fire had not only caught the kitchen but also Edward and I's room, which was next to the kitchen, and his parents room.

My heart paces fast as I run towards his parents room.

There I see Mrs. Peirce already unconscious on the bed and see Mr. Peirce coughing uncontrollably.

"Mr. Peirce!" I run up to him to get him out of the house. "Come, take my hand. We need to get out!" I say loudly. The fire was all around us and it was getting extremely impossible for me to breathe.

"But, what about Sarah? Who's going to get her out of the house?" He says with tears in his eyes.

"Don't worry. I will get her out. But, please just take my hand because the sooner we get out, the sooner I can come back to get Mrs. Peirce!"

He starts nodding and takes my hand. I, somehow manage to get Mr. Peirce and I out of the house.

But as soon as we do get out of the house, Mr. Peirce falls to the ground, coughing nonstop.

"Are you okay, Mr. Peirce?!" I ask him in fear. What have I done?

His breathing slows down and he points his head towards the house, his eyes slowly closing. No no no. "Just go get my wife out of the house, dear. Please." He says while letting go off my hand.

I didn't move. I couldn't. I was in a state of absolute fear and shock and my eyes were getting teary.

"Please." He says so softly, I could hardly hear it.

I nodded.

I stood up and ran inside the house. Unable to breathe and coughing madly due to the intense amount of smoke around me. I could barely walk.

But finally, in some such way, I got to the room where Mrs. Peirce was laying on the bed, her eyes closed.

I ran to her, "Mrs. Peirce," I shake her continuously. "Wake up, wake up, please!"

But it was no use, she wasn't waking up.

It was so suffocating, my breathes started getting rapid. I covered my mouth with my hand, but it was futile.

My legs gave up and I fell to the ground.

It was getting hard to breathe.

That's when I heard his voice. Edward's voice.

"Mum! Evelyn!" He shouted our names.

"Mum! Eve-" He stopped shouting abruptly.

I saw him enter the room frantically.

He looked at his mum, crying. He shook his head in disbelief panic.

Then he looked at me as I looked at him, barely able to keep my eyes open.

"Evelyn! Are you okay?!" He asked me, terrified. "Come on, let's take you to the hospital!" He says loudly.

He grabs my hand but I shake my head, letting go off his hand, knowing that it's too late now. I could feel myself slowly dying.

"I'm sorry," I say weakly, no energy left in me anymore.

"Why are you sorry, Evie?" He says, crying.

"Your parents, they were so dear to you, and I couldn't save them." I say with tears in my eyes. My eyes slowly closing.

"You're dear to me too." He smiles sadly.

"Take care of yourself." I say, smiling weakly.

EDWARD'S POV

"Take care of yourself." She says with a weak and tired smile.

And then I see her chest slowly ceasing to rise and fall and her eyes close.

"No no no! Evelyn! Wake up!" I hold her shoulders, shaking her, desperate to find any remaining flickers of life in my wife's body.

But all I was met with was the noise of the blazing fire around me and her lifeless body.

-

"Edward!" The sound of my name snapped me back into reality.

I turn around to see my friend, Henry, calling me.

"Are you alright, mate?" He asked me while walking towards me.

I nod, "Yeah, I'm alright."

"Are you sure?" He asks, concerned.

I give him a slight smile and nod.

"Alright, let's get back to work or else cheif's going to get really furious." He says, raising his eyebrows.

I laugh as we start walking back to the construction site.

Ever since, my parents and wife died due to the fire that day, my heart has been in complete anguish.

Yes, I'm traumatized by what happened that day and yes it will take me abundant amount of time to get over it. But one day I will. I just don't know when that day will arrive.
