Chapter 24 | "Anyone would have done it"

Hoseok walked into the room and the strong smell of Jungkook hit his nose. He tilted his head out of confusion. Hoseok was the mate who always kept track of everyone's ruts. It was far too early for Jungkook to go into rut.

As he walked towards his room to drop his stuff off, he saw Seokjin sitting in front of your room. He was slightly panicking but trying to put on a strong facade.

"Y/N-ah?" Hoseok heard Seokjin speak very softly. "Are you alright? Do you think you can open the door for me?"

Hoseok could hear the very soft whimpers coming out of your room. Worry immediately set in, hoping that Jungkook didn't do anything to scare you. Since you were a Human, and Hybrids usually stayed home during their ruts and heats, you would have never actually seen them when they were in their most vulnerable state.

"Hyung," Hoseok called out, catching the older Hybrid's attention.

"Ah, Hoseok-ah," Seokjin said, his tense form relaxing almost immediately.

Since the Samoyed Hybrid was so invested in getting you to calm down, he didn't realize that Hoseok had come home.

"Hyung, what's wrong? How come Jungkook started his rut?" Hoseok asked softly, in a quiet voice, in hopes that you wouldn't be able to hear.

Seokjin motioned with his head for Hoseok to follow him. Seokjin led them to the living room, a good distance from your door but close enough that he'll be able to see if you come out.

"Apparently, Y/N-ie coming to live with us may trigger all of our ruts," Seokjin informed the younger Hybrid.

"Of course," Hoseok said as the realization set in. Hoseok was a nurse working in one of the big hospitals in Seoul. He worked with children of both the Human and Hybrid species. "Did Jungkook...?"

Seokjin shook his head. "He was close to. I have him locked in his room," Seokjin sighed. He never liked the idea of locking one of their mates in their room because of their ruts, which they had no choice over. But seeing your face full of fear and your whimpers, he felt like he didn't have a choice.

Hoseok nodded, fully understanding the elder's predicament. "So I'm guessing, we'll have to start taking suppressants. Since her scent is probably going to send us into a state that we're not going to be proud of," Hoseok scratched the side of his forehead.

"Just until, you know... we get more intimate or she becomes more comfortable around us. I think Jungkook's sudden rut might have scared her a bit," Seokjin said with a worried glance at your door. "I think it might have something to do with the reason why she always wore her Scent Blockers."

"I see," Hoseok frowned at the admission. "Hyung, you can take care of Jungkook. I'll try talking to her."

"Thanks, Hob-ah," Seokjin said patting Hoseok's shoulder.

"Strawberries, huh," Hoseok said as he smelled a foreign smell on Seokjin when the elder came closer to pat his shoulder.

"Yeah," Seokjin said a bright smile dawning his face. "She was so willing to overcome whatever trauma she had, but I'm worried that this is going to set everything back."

"Hyung, she'll be fine," Hoseok reassured his elder. "She's strong. I'm sure she'll be able to overcome this."

Seokjin smiled and nodded at the optimistic words of the younger Labrador Hybrid. "You're right," he agreed. Seokjin, after giving Hoseok a hug, walked towards Jungkook's room.

Hoseok went in front of your door and sat down, his back pressed against your door. He could hear your uneven breathing. Your soft whimpers had disappeared.

"Y/N-ah," Hoseok started softly but loudly enough that you would hear him from inside your room. "I'm home from work. I don't know if you know this, but I'm a nurse. I work with children at the Seoul University Hospital. Today there was a little girl, who was just over 6, who came in with a broken arm. When I asked her what happened, she told me that one of the Humans in her class was being mean to her Hybrid friend, so she pushed the Human as hard as she could. But the Human pushed her back, and she fell and broke her arm."

Hoseok began to talk about his work. Hoping to take your mind off of what happened and to calm you down to the point that you could have a conversation with him.

"When she was in the hospital, she wasn't crying at all. She was laughing and talking with her Hybrid friend, who was a mess," Hoseok recounted with a soft laugh. "You would've thought that the Hybrid was the one who broke her arm. Anyway, she reminded me so much of you, that I couldn't help but take extra care of her. I know that we aren't supposed to have favourites and treat everyone the same, but that little girl was definitely my favourite."

From inside the room, Hoseok could hear a very soft laugh. It was very faint, but he heard it nonetheless. The Hybrid smiled.

"Her mom and dad came in, and when we told them what happened, they just started laughing, telling us that they should've known. I thought that they were going to be upset, but they were pretty cool about the entire thing," Hoseok continued. "I think that little girl might grow up to be just like you. Fighting for us, Hybrids."

"Hopefully, she won't get hurt." He almost missed it, because it was so quiet, but he did hear your voice.

"Y/N-ah," Hoseok began. "Do you think you can open the door for me? You don't have to worry about Jungkook. He's in his room with Seokjin."

There was a moment of silence. Hoseok still hoped that you would open the door for him. Sure enough, after a minute, you opened your door slightly. Just enough so that he could see your face but not enough that it could be seen as an invitation into your room. Hoseok could smell the subtle scent of Strawberries. Mate.

The scent wasn't strong, as you had recently put your Scent Blockers on. But still, as Yoongi said, it was heavenly. It coated him like a warm blanket, giving him a sense of comfort.

He saw you for the first time that day, and he couldn't help but feel his heart break a little bit. Your eyes were red and slightly puffy, an indication that you were, indeed, crying. You looked up at him with glossy eyes. There was nothing more he wanted to do but to give you a hug and possibly hunt down whoever caused you so much pain.

"Is everything okay?" the Labrador Hybrid asked, not stepping foot into your room.

You shook your head. You didn't like showing this vulnerable state. But he was your mate, someone that you could trust with your life. With your pain. With everything.

"Is...he okay?" You asked, your voice still shaking a little bit.

"He should be, hyung's taking care of him," he responded.

You nodded your head. "Thank you," you said quietly.

"For?"

"You took me out of my head," you admitted, giving him a small smile.

Hoseok gave you a very wide smile, proud that he was able to help you. "If you ever need to talk, we're all ears. I don't want to brag, but I'm pretty good at listening, more than the others, that is."

You chuckled, Hoseok's smile was very contagious. "I will, thanks, oppa."

He shrugged. "Anyone would have done it," Hoseok recycled what you told him when you saved his life. It was a phrase that really stuck with him.
