Chapter 49: Wrong side of the bed

Sav always dreamed.

And when she did, she always remembered. She couldn't stop it.

It was never a memory she wished to see.

Only nightmares that haunted the abode of her sleepless mind were present in her dreams. She didn't know if it was a blessing that it kept her from seeing happy memories that she could no longer reach, or a curse that she kept seeing things she never wished to see or imagine again. And that's why tonight, in front of the room she was supposed to be sharing with Nami and Robin, Sav was hesitating to enter.

It had been a long time since she had properly talked to people, let alone slept in the same room with them. Hence, no one had actually seen how she had trouble sleeping, how she woke up with panicked breaths in the middle of the night or how sometimes she cried, just a little. Sometimes letting out small names of people she knew, people she could remember, which had slowly dwindled down to a single person.

So now as she stood in front of the closed door, her questions jumbled up to form a confusing questionnaire, asking her what the best possible option was.

Would she have a nightmare tonight?

Would she have trouble sleeping causing the other two to be uncomfortable?

Would she make too much noise?

Unfortunately, before her questions could be answered, the closed door that stood in front of her flung open. Sav sucked in her breath as though it would help suck in all her anxiety. Nami's curious eyes locked onto her own, which she assumed (or hoped) were blank.

- "Oh, I guess you were coming in." Nami spoke up, with a happy and friendly voice. Sav smiled back with a similar demeanour, seeming calm and collected, just as a bad bitch should be. BUT WHAT WAS SHE SUPPOSED TO DO NOW.

Sav smiled even wider.

- "Oh, no! I was just about to head to the deck to do some night viewing actually!" Sav replied, with vigour, her energetic voice making it seem like she had never seen a starry night in the sky before. Nami didn't seem fazed, probably because she had someone eccentric as Luffy as her captain. But Sav didn't need to think about that right now.

- "Oh. Have fun then!" Nami said, smiling once again as she headed back into the room.

Sav sighed, slumping her back. Resigning to her fate, Sav thought maybe she didn't need to sleep tonight.

The diamond-like stars shining in the dark with the violet shaded night sky somehow actually did good to Sav, who was sitting on the floor of the deck, with her head raised up and her eyes open wide.

Back when she used to live in "her world" it would never be possible to see this many stars at night, even if one specifically looked for them. Once in a while, the stars would peek through the dust and the light to present themselves to the world and its inhabitants. Or maybe, it was only because she lived in a city. Either way, Sav had never seen such a sky. Thus, she felt that it was a good thing that she had decided to stay out tonight.

Sav layed down, closing her eyes and letting the breeze brush against her face.

Before she knew it she was already in deep sleep.

Everything felt oddly comfortable.

That's what Sav thought when she woke from her slumber. This comfort didn't come from the bed, Sav noted, which was comfortable enough but not the cause of her confusion. It wasn't the surroundings that brought comfort but the quality of her sleep that gave her this sense of ease.

Sleep...

It was weird, she didn't remember sleeping. Sav slowly got up to a sitting position on the bed, her eyes not yet fully open and her mind not yet awake. She groaned.

Where was she?

Sav stretched as she looked around the room. Her eyes that were roaming around the area fell on top of a blanket that was folded neatly on the floor on the other side of the room. Which confused her further. Why was there a blanket on the floor?

Sav got up, too groggy to care for the answer. But as she stood up, her eyes landed on yet another peculiar item. Ace's hat was placed neatly on top of the table near the bed. She froze. A question came up in her mind.

Was the hat in the wrong place... or was she the one who was..intruding?

Sav looked around slowly as though she did not want the answer to her question.

There was only one bed here. This was not the room she was supposed to sleep at.

....

....

....

Was this Aces room?

Sav crouched down, covering her face with her hands. If someone walked in right now they would think she was trying to hide, or disappeared. But unfortunately she was not doing a good job at it. A groan escaped her mouth as she wallowed in embarrassment. How had she ended up here?

Sav stood there a bit more, still covering her face, not wanting to see the room that was causing her embarrassment.

Until her stomach groaned.

And she gave up.

Food was more important than her embarrassment. But it didn't mean she needed to act rashly. She did not pause until she reached the door of the kitchen. Pausing for a second Sav finally walked in, with worry in her eyes and hesitation in her steps.

- "I knew Crocodile, one of the seven warlords, was in this country... But a pirate trying to steal a Kingdom? That sounds like a bad joke. A pirate dropping anchor in one spot and settling down? " Ace stood up, having noticed a certain girl enter the room. "There could be another side to this takeover thing." He added, walking towards Sav.

Zoro frowned. "Another side?" he questioned.

- "Some sort of deeper goal.." Ace clarified as he made eye contact with Sav. Who responded by taking a step back, still not sure how she had ended up sleeping in his room. Before she could speak to him Usoop spoke up, filling the kitchen table with a new energy.

- "We're finally going into the desert! I bet it'll be hot..."

Nami entered the room just as he said those words, Sav moved to the side to let her in, causing her to move closer to Ace who had for whatever reason decided to stand next to her today.

- "It gets over 50 C in the daytime!" Nami answered Usopp causing Chopper to exclaim with surprise.

- "Eh!? It does?!"

However a heartbroken Sanj was quick to change the topic of the conversation.

- "What happened, Nami-San?! Where did your dancer outfit go?!" His eyes held true heartbreak as he spoke and Vivi's entrance didn't help much either. "Aah! Not you too, Vivi-chan! Why are you dressed like that?!" Sanji bellowed, laying on the floor with defeat.

Vivi laughed at his reaction. "In the desert, any exposed will wind up terribly sunburned!"

- "This is terrible...My dancer girls..." Sanji rolled to his side, Sav could almost see tears in his eyes. Just then their eyes met as Sanji seemed to recollect himself. " At least I have you Sav-chan." He bellowed. Sav laughed from shock, not knowing what to say.

Ace held Sav's arm at that moment, placing a cloth on top of her hands which he had gently pulled to his side. "You should wear this." He added as he moved to help the others get the ship ready for anchor. Sav reached out, tapping his arm before he could leave, not minding Sanji's renewed cries for his loss.

- "What about you..?" She asked, extending the cloth he had given her. Ace smiled at her.

- "Don't worry, I have an extra one in my... room." Ace replied. Sav blushed. Now she wished she hadn't asked.

Zoro passed through the kitchen heading to the deck. "Let's get ready to disembark" Usoop said, as he followed after Zoro who replied with a "Yeah."

- "Sav are you hot? Your face seems a bit red." Vivi asked Sav, who was too busy considering whether she should launch herself into the sea or not. Before she could reply, Luffy's question broke off their conversation.

- "What's that?" His outburst piqued their interest. Both Sav and Vivi moved towards the deck and what Sav saw made her stop in her steps. 20 to 30 Seal like animals had surrounded the ship as they shouted with one of their hands (?) reached to the sky in a battle cry.
