What are you doing here? (21)

I look out of the car's window at the orphanage building, it looks so much different than the first time I saw it. Now, that they crowd's gone and there's only a handful of people does it look normal.

A guard opens my door for me and I step out of the car pushing my sunglasses into my hair. I cross the little stretch of road to the entrance and climb up the steps. Everything on the inside is the same as it was before.

Samantha looks up at me and a smile spreads across her face. "Your highness, welcome back!"

She hurries forward and grasps my hand tightly before shaking it vigorously. I pry my hand out of hers and ask.

"Are the rest of helpers in yet?"

She clicks her tongue. "No, they're on lunch break." After a pause she adds. "Is there something you want from them?"

I shake my head. "No, I just want to talk to them about the children's comfort and whether they're comfortable working in this environment."

"Ah! You always think of other people. That's so kind of you." She says in an over exaggerated voice, making me give her a weak, fake smile.

"I'll just wait there then." I tell her pointing towards the little waiting area with magazine racks.

"Of course! Can I get you something to drink?" She asks, eagerly following me.

I sit down on a couch. "Some water, please."

She hurries off and I heave a sigh of relief but in a matter of moments she returns with a bottle. I take it and thank her. But after a few seconds of having her stand watch over me I ask her as kindly as possible to resume her work.

Once she leaves I call William. The moment he picks up,

"What made you hire a woman like Samantha?!"

"What?" He asks surprised.

"I just got here and she just won't stop bugging me!" I look over at her only to find her looking at me and she waves, forcing me to wave back.

"She won't stop looking at me and just waved at me! What's her problem?"

He sighs. "Look, she's old enough to be our grandmother. So, just ignore her and do what I asked you to."

I huff. "The helpers are on lunch break, so I have to wait for them to get back."

I hear chatter from his end and he says, "I have to go because the meeting's about to start and father's giving me the death glare."

I laugh at this. "Alright, bye. I love you."

"Love you too."

Just as I end the call a little voice calls out. "Cassy!"

I look up to find Sarah running towards me with Samantha right on her tail, saying. "Madam, if this girl is annoying you I can take her away."

"You're the one annoying me instead of her." I think to myself but out loud I say. "No, it's fine. She's not. She's a really good girl."

Sarah beams at me as Samantha unwillingly goes back to her place at the desk. I hug the little girl in front of me.

"How've you been?" I ask her.

"Good!" She replies with a shy smile.

"Where're the other girls?" I inquire.

"They're asleep. They all stayed up late night playing dolls but I went to bed like a good little girl." She replies making me smile.

Then all of a sudden she says. "My aunt came to visit me again a few weeks ago."

"She did?" I blink in surprise.

"Yeah!" She confirms.

"Now do you remember her name?" I ask, hopefully.

She shakes her head making her ponytail swing. "Nope! I forgot to ask her, but I'll ask her the next time I see her."

"Please do." I tell her.

"Princess Cassandra!" I look up at Samantha. "The helpers are back."

"Could you please gather them in one place?" She hurries off happily to fulfil my request and I turn back to Sarah.

"Okay, I've got to go but I'll stop by later to check on you, okay?" She nods her head and skips off.

I get up and walk towards the corridor that leads off the lobby. One of the cons of being four months pregnant with twins is that in order to cover it up you have to walk slow, real slow.

By the time I reach the first room which William told me is the mini theatre, everyone has gathered just like I requested.

"Hello everyone!" I call out and all conversation ceases.

"I'm here to ask you all for your feedback. I want you to be completely honest with me. Will you be?" A chorus of 'yes' answers my question.

I take a deep breath.

"Alright, first of all are you all liking your jobs?"

"Yes."

"Are you happy with them?"

"Yes."

"Are you fine with the environment?"

"Yes."

"Are the children comfortable with you?"

"Yes."

"If there is anything that you want to change please do let me know." This is met with silence, so I repeat. "Any changes that you want to be made?"

I look at the still crowd and then slowly a hand appears in the air. I motion towards the lady it belongs to to speak.

"I'm a mother of two sons and I took this job because I knew that these children lack parental attention. So, I thought that maybe I could provide them with a fraction of that. Most of the people working here are youngsters who have no experience in the field of handling children. My suggestion is that instead of wasting money on training them get other people who've been trained by life. People who have children of their own and can understand those here."

I understand what she means and nod my head in approval.

"You mean to say that, we should get experienced people. Experienced not in the sense that they're trained but that they have their own children so that they can understand the children here?"

She nods her head and I say. "That's a quite good suggestion. Anyone else?"

Following her lead several more people come up with problems being faced and how to solve them. I make a mental note of each one of them so that I can pass them on to William.

Once I'm done, I thank them for their time and leave the room. The moment I step outside my phone starts to buzz in my pocket. Helen.

"Hey Helen!"

"Hi! Umm...Could I have the entire day off instead of just this afternoon because my relatives they aren't here yet and are going to be running late?"

"Yeah, sure. You can." I tell her.

"Thank you so much!" With this she hangs up and my phone shows me a new message. I'm too engrossed in the picture of Leo that Ella just sent me that I don't realize where I'm going and bump into someone making me look up.

"What are you doing here, Helen?"
