Cayden's POV

As soon as the clock hit midnight, I knew it was time for me to go home.

I was having a good time hanging out with my friends in the first couple of hours that I've been at Theo and Jake's frat party. But now, all I want to do is lay down in bed with my two girls cuddled up next to me.

"Alright, boys," I announced to my teammates sitting next to me. "I'm gonna head out. You guys have a good rest of your night."

"Already man? It's only 12," Aaron, one of the guys on the team, whined. "The party hasn't even really started."

"Hey, our guy's got a family to get back to," Theo said.

"More like a ball and chain." I'm sure he thought he muttered it under his breath but since he was already intoxicated in came out at a normal tone.

"Watch it," Jake told him with a pointed glare. "That's my sister you're talking about. And she ain't even like that."

Aaron put up his two hands in surrender. "I didn't mean no disrespect. I'm just saying, man. Cayd hardly ever hangs out with all of us anymore."

"But it ain't from Brooke's doing. Unless you fucking forgot, he's got a daughter at home. One who's being taken cared of right now by that ball and chain you speak so highly of."

I put my hand on Jake's shoulder. "Bro, chill." I tried to calm him down. "I'm sure he didn't mean anything by it."

He dusted my hand off his shoulder and stood, leveling me up. "Nah. Fuck you, Cayd."

What the hell did I do?

"You're the one who should be defending her. Not me," he went on, answering my question. "Especially after all the shit she does for you." Then he walked away, rolling his shoulders and clinching his fists.

Just for the record, I had every intention of defending Brooke. Jake just beat me to it. Obviously, I wouldn't have just sat there and let someone say stuff like that about her. Even if that person was one of my friends. I may be new to this whole boyfriend game, but even I know you shouldn't let your friends talk shit about your girlfriend.

When I looked back at the couch where Aaron was sitting, he was no longer there. Good thing, too, because I would have looked pathetic as fuck yelling at him after getting yelled at myself for not yelling at him in the first place.

"I'm gonna go, bro," I said looking over at Theo.

"Okay." He patted me on the back. "And don't worry about all of this. Those two will be all cooled down by morning."

I hope so. I don't need to be on Jake's Shit List again. I just got off of the Goddamn thing. And I'm pretty sure it had a lot to do with Brooke secret convincing.

I slightly nodded my head and turned to leave. Just as I was about to walk away from my group of friends, Stephanie walked pass our circle. I nodded my head at her, making her wave at me in response.

Through the corner of my eye, I saw Theo's mood change drastically. His calm, cool, and collected face turned angry as he started shooting death rays at Stephanie. Clearly, Stephanie saw it too because she stopped in her tracks, turned to Theo, and said, "What the fuck is your problem?"

Yup, it was definitely time for me to leave.

I walked out of the frat, looking down at my phone, trying to get an Uber to my location ASAP. Every single person standing in my way got out of it without me even having to say a word or acknowledge my presence. Being the King of Campus definitely comes with its perks.

I got back to my house in less than half an hour, especially since the nearest Uber was only three minutes away. I quietly unlocked the front door and made my way into the house, trying not to wake anyone up. Just as I turned around after locking the door, I noticed the kitchen light was on.

Maybe Brooke left it on for me.

I walked towards the kitchen and when I got to it's doorway, I saw Brooke sitting on one of the counters, eating something out of a takeout container. She didn't see me yet, since her back was facing me, so I decided to try and scare her.

I tip toed to her, trying my hardest not to make a sound. She continued to eat, swinging her legs back and forth. When I was standing a few inches away from her, I stopped.

Before I got the chance to jump out from behind her, she put her container down and said, "I know you're behind me." She then turned her body to face me and shook her head. "And do you really think trying to scare someone who's an arms reach away from a knife is the smartest thing to do?"

"Damn! How'd you know I was here?"

She pointed at the microwave sitting on the counter directly in front of me. "I could see your reflection, dummy! Anyone ever tell you, you look funny trying to tip toe. Guys over six feet with 225 pounds worth of muscle shouldn't try to tip toe," she laughed.

"Wow! What did I ever do to you," I pouted. "You've been being mean to me all night."

She pulled me in front of her and she wrapped her legs around my waist. She then grabbed one of my hands and ran it up and down her other arm. "This is another reason on how I knew you were here." I could feel the goosebumps brushing against my palm. "This always happens when I'm near you."

I pulled her head to me and leaned down meeting her in the middle with a kiss. After a few seconds, she pulled away completely but not before placing one more chaste kiss on my lips.

"I used to think that was kind of creepy when I would hear my mom and her book club talk about that kind of stuff." It's true. I did. "But now that it's happening to me, I think it's pretty cool. It means our relationship is romance book worthy," I told her while wagging my eyebrows.

"You're damn right it is," she laughed. She picked back up her container and continued to eat, what I now know is Fettuccine Alfredo. She brought a forkful of pasta up to my lips and placed it into my mouth once I opened it. "You smell like the perfume section of a Walmart."

I sniffed my shirt. "Yeah, there were some girls hanging around us at the party." She rolled her eyes at me. "What?"

"Nothing," she mumbled, then took a bite of her food. "Speaking of, how was the party?"

"It was good," I told her. "I sort of pissed Jake off, though, right before I left." She brought another forkful of food up to my lips.

"How come?"

"You know Aaron, from the team." She nodded. "He called you my ball and chain. And I didn't defend you," I said hesitantly. "So Jake got mad."

Instead of being angry, like I thought she was, she just giggled. "Aww! Are your friend's mad because I'm taking away all of their Cayden time?"

"I guess. But I promise, baby, I was going to say something to him. Jake just said something first. Then they both just got up and walked away before I had a chance to say anything to either of them."

"It's okay," she shrugged. "Jake'll come around. Just talk to him about it the next time you see him. He's just kind of protective over me. You know?"

Yeah, so I've noticed. Twice.

"I know I've asked you this before but," I paused. "I don't have anything to worry about, do I?"

"About what?"

"You and Jake."

Without missing a beat, she answered, "Absolutely not." She paused while staring deep into my eyes. "I love him and he loves me in the exact same way you love Theo. Like a sibling."

I nodded my head at her response. I wasn't happy hearing that she loved some other guy, even if she wasn't interested in him relationship wise. But I had to accept the fact that her and Jake were always going to be more than just friends.

I just had to remember that it's me who she calls her boyfriend. Not anyone else.

We stayed downstairs for 15 more minutes, talking about the night the girls had, all while Brooke carried on with feeding the both of us. I could tell Brooke enjoyed her time with Cayleigh and I'm pretty sure Cayleigh had an even better time with her. When the story and pasta were both all done with, Brooke threw her container in the trash and started to tidy up the kitchen a bit before going back upstairs.

"I'm gonna make sure everything's all locked up down here. Then I'll be right up."

"Okay," she replied. "Do you want me to start the shower for you or no?"

"No need, baby. I had one before I left. You can get bed ready for me, though."

I went around the house, making sure all the doors and windows were locked. Then I double checked them while turning off all the lights.

You can never be too safe.

Before heading into my own room, I made a quick stop in Cayleigh's. She was snuggled up against her favorite teddy bear, which was almost the same size as her. Based on how freshly tucked in her blanket was around her, I'm assuming Brooke also came in here before going into our room.

"Sweet dreams, Princess," I told her and placed a kiss on her forehead. Then I walked out, leaving the door slightly opened.

When I walked into mine and Brooke's room, I saw her placing her face wash back into her bag. She still refuses to leave stuff here or even keep her clothes in one of my drawers. She only just started leaving a toothbrush in the bathroom next to mine.

    Baby steps, dude. Baby steps.

I closed my door behind me, making sure it was unlocked just in case Cayleigh wanted to come in, in the middle of the night. When I got into bed, Brooke turned her body into mine and wrapped her arm around my stomach while intertwining her legs with mine.

    "Good night, baby," I yawned.

    "G'night, baby," she replied.

She rested her head on my chest and tightened her grasp around my body. I watched as the clock beside me turned minute after minute, waiting for Brooke's breathing to even out. I wanted to make sure she was sound asleep before I fell asleep myself.

Suddenly, she lifted her head and placed her chin on my chest. "Can I ask you something?"

"How long was that thought stirring in your head," I laughed.

She brought one of her shoulders up to her ear. "All night."

What she had to ask must be something huge if she held it in all night. Brooke's usually the type of person who doesn't like to beat around the bush. Unless of course, it's something important and she's skeptical on whether or not she should say anything.

I nodded my head at her, half curious and half afraid of what it was she wanted to know.

"Can you tell me about Cayleigh's real mom?"
