[Chapter 3 - Re-Tryouts?!]

-Riley-

Today is the day I find out if I made the team, I mean it's not like my life depended on it or anything. It would just make my brother proud, and I always wanted to make him proud of me.

I got to the school extra early and made sure to be the first inside the building, even the nerds couldn't beat me. I sprinted to the back of the school where the gym was and ran straight up to the board posted outside of it.

I skimmed the various papers until I found the paper I was looking for. I looked down the list and found the one thing that could easily make or break my day.

Skimming the list three times over I found no sign of my name and I found it to be extremely disappointing. What would I tell my family?

"Hey, Texas!" A cheery voice called out, I looked up sulkily at the person calling my nickname. Whinnie.

"What's a matter?" She asked concerned, I took a deep breath and pointed to the paper that shattered me.

She looked at it for a minute, pitty in her eyes before she cheered up, "Texas look! You have a re-tryout! The first one in years!"

I almost got whiplash from looking up so quickly, I found her finger pointing to the very bottom of the page which read, 'The following players are scheduled to have a re-tryout Friday, March 15, 2019, at 2:45 sharp: Kayden Walker, Riley Seager'

I stood there shocked, so shocked I didn't even feel the presence of people behind me.

"What's wrong Princess, didn't make the team?" A smug voice asked from behind me. I turned to see the weasel himself, standing there in a leather jacket, decked in all black. Such a Travis, definitely not making that mistake again.

"Actually neither of us made the team, so what game are you playing now?" I asked innocently, batting my eyelashes to add effect. As predicted the guy smirked and huffed a laugh before looking forward with the 'I-highly-doubt-that-' look.

To his amaze, he read the list and furrowed his eyebrows before the text at the bottom caught his eye. "Re-tryouts? That hasn't been called for in years!" He cried out glaring at me.

I shrugged my shoulders, "Well that's what you get when you mess with the best. Now see you at 2:45 sharp." I said sashaying away to my first period. Whinnie caught up to me and her eyes were as big as a deer's staring at headlights.

"What. Was. That." She barely got out. I shrugged my shoulders, "He decided to play me yesterday, not his smartest move. Now he is facing the consequences."

She gaped at me as if in disbelief, people around here really need to learn to stick up for themselves.

The morning classes seemed to go by in a blur, except for homeroom. I found out I had homeroom with the dick himself, and neither of us was happy about it. I tried to focus on the school work that I needed to do, but he was burning holes into me with his stares.

It annoyed me, why couldn't he get over himself. Yes I am female, and yes I tried out for the team shouldn't he be trying to get in my pants rather than try to get rid of me?

I sighed and shook my head as I waited for the students to clear out of the hallway. Once the coast was clear I sat at the bottom of my locker and dialed the number I could always count on.

I pressed the cold phone up to my ear as I waited for the line to pick up, I hope he wasn't preoccupied.

"Rhy Rhy?" The voice asked softly. I smiled at the nickname and hearing his voice over the phone. "Hey, Ree-Ree" I replied holding the phone in my left hand to my left ear and my right hand to my right ear.

"What's up?" He asked calmly, I think he senses my uneasiness. "Are you busy?" I asked closing my eyes praying he wasn't.

"At the moment no, I have about twenty minutes or so till the boys come in the locker room so we can get ready for the game." He replied I smiled knowing he was going to play and do great.

"So you know how we moved to North Carolina?" I asked he hummed in response. "Well the school I'm attending has no softball team. So I tried out for the baseball team." I paused for a minute.

"A baseball team, with all boys? And you're the only girl?" He asked, anger lacing his words but I didn't pay any mind.

"Yes, now keep up. So I tried out and I did everything you taught me-" I started but was cut off by him screaming in my ear. "You are the only girl with all boys? Do I need to come to North Carolina right now to kick some ass?"

I sighed and shook my head as if he could see it, "No Corey, just listen please?" I silently begged him. He sighed but gave me the go-to continue.

"So I tried out and did everything you taught me, to say the boys and the coach were impressed is an understatement. The only issue is I didn't make the team, I made a re-tryout and I have to go against the 'all-star' player that they have here." I took a deep breath before I continued, "I'm nervous Ree-Ree, I want to make it and make you and dad proud." I said the ending softer than my other words.

I heard him suck in some breath before he let out a little laugh, "Rhy Rhy you will always make dad and I proud. Hell, I'm proud you had the guts to try out for the baseball team, but I know you can handle it."

I smiled and I heard some background noises, "Hey is that your sister?" I heard someone call. Corey laughed, "You're on speaker sis, say hi to Cody!"

I felt myself get really happy, Cody was honestly my favorite and Corey's best friend. "Hey Cody, guess what! I tried out for the baseball team!" I squealed.

I heard him laugh before checking with my brother to see if it was real, "Did you make it Riley?" He asked Corey coughed awkwardly before my breath hitched.

"Sorta I just have to kick some guy's ass at baseball then I will be on the team," I said proudly. I had this strange feeling I was being watched but brushed it off. "Good job little broski, hey I got to go. See you next time you come to a game!" I said goodbye and Corey took me off speakerphone.

"How good is this guy?" Corey asked seriously. I sighed thinking back at tryouts, "Good, like almost as good as me and I'm the all famous Corey Seager's sister for crying out loud!" I said flailing my right arm.

He laughed at the other end of the phone, "Just breath and show him how you really play baseball. He can't be as good as you, you were taught by the best!" He said. I guarantee he had a full-blown smile on his face thinking of our childhood when I would always chant that he was the best.

"I'm just scared." I said before I was cut off, "Riley Kennedy Seager, I will not sit here cross country and listen to you say you're scared of some highschooler. Do not make me come from California to North Carolina to knock some sense into you, because believe me I will! Be the baseball sister I remember, the one who kicked ass the last time she met my fellow players!"

I sighed, "You're right I'm stupid." He laughed and replied in a 'duh' tone, "Yeah you are." I hugged myself slightly missing Corey. "When are you coming back?" I asked quietly.

He sighed and I heard him shuffle around, "I don't know. I was hoping I could try to come out there soon like in two or three weeks but I'm not sure sis."

I sighed and nodded understanding his situation, "Hey Rhy bear, the boys are going to come in soon. You will do great today, tell mom and dad I said hi. Don't forget who you are." His voice was serious, and I teared up a little. I nodded and squeaked out an 'okay'.

"Love you," he said quietly, I had to blink back tears "To the moon, I love you too."

With that, he hung up the phone, and I sat there for a minute to regain myself. I didn't even register the footsteps that neared me or the presence in front of me.

"So you're Corey's little sister?"

Hey guys!
