Ambar POV

I look at the shock register on her face when I apologized, as she walks out in a beautiful dress, somewhat between a grey and a sky blue lehenga with a long shirt hugging her curves and net covering her belly and flowing towards the floor. She looked beautiful.

Like an angel send from heaven to bestow blessing on a sinner like me.

She must have worn this all excited to dance the night away, happily.

If not for my Grandma.

The lady in question sits in the car as I turn to nod at Chetan who was driving mom and dad in the other car. He drove the car out of the gate and I watched it leave before sitting on the driver side and put my seat belt on.

"Dadi, belt lgalo.." I say tight lipped trying to keep my anger in check and she does as told. I drive the car out of Samayra's house ready to take the woman sitting next to me as far from Jeet as possible.

(Put your belt on, Grandma.)

I drive on the empty roads of her society towards the highway, traffic increasing with each meter.

"Itna to mene kuch bolya bhi na tha, jitna tum badhaan laag gaye se.." She says and I grip the steering wheel tighter trying to calm down before I talk to her.

(I didn't even say something as hyper as you all are making it..)

(Haryanvi might sound as a rude language to Hindi speakers, but it is what it is. Oh and imagining Ambar speak Haryanvi is kind of hot. )

"Dil ke mareez ne uske bapu.. Bola bhi tha ki shadi k agle din bada operation huya tha. Ab agar unko kuch hove ga toh kon jimmedar hove se.. Iklauti chori hai unki.. Voh jindagi se bas yehi chaavein hai, ke ik pyar or sanmaan dene vala ghar mil jave uska.. Naa ki har choti baat pe galti nikal kr beizzati kr daale.. Tumne toh unki sab umeedon par pani pher diya na, dadi.." I bash out.

(Her father is a heart patient. We told you that he had a major surgery, a day after the wedding. Now if something happens to him, who will be responsible? He has one daughter and all he wanted from life was that she gets a family that loves and respects her, not insult her for every small mistake.. You destroyed their hopes, Grandma.)

"Usko bole toh bhi theek.. Uske maa bapu ki ke galti.. Unko kyu boli tu.. Unhone toh itna pdha likha kr honhaar bnaya.. daktar bnayein se.. ab uski parvarish thodi si alag hai.. pr iska mtlb yeh toh na ki parvarish galat hai.. Haan, Thode modern vichardhara vale log ne.. Uski koi galti thodi na se.. Jo hai so hai. Baat baat par uske maa-baap ko kyu bolne laagi?" I continue speaking still infuriated at her actions.

(You scold her and it's still okay. What is her parent's fault? Why did you speak to them like this? They are responsible for her education, for her being a doctor. Her bringing up is a little different but that does not mean it's wrong. Yes, they are people with a little modern thinking, But it is what it is. Why do you blame her parents for every little thing? )

I was met with complete silence as she looked out of the window.

After my Dad spoke back to her when she called out Samayra for being ill-mannered and I had sent her inside to get ready (though I was 90% sure, she'd refuse but it was still worth a try), Grandma told Samayra's mother if their daughter was a witch or if she did some kind of magic that made my family bend according to her will.

I spoke this time and told her to stop talking and just go sit in the car.

She just replied by saying that I was becoming my wife's slave. I didn't respond and gestured for mom and Chetan to go towards the car as well. Dad joined both his hands towards Jeet in apology and nodded sympathetically before we all walked towards our car.

I didn't have the heart to turn back and meet the eyes of my Father-in-law but I did look up and see Samayra walk out with a small smile on her lips. She met my eyes and I apologized. She turned to look at her father who was sitting down and I couldn't see him due to Samayra's mom's back towards me.

She turned to look at him and I shut the car door for Grandma. I didn't look back too embarrassed to face my in-laws and wanting to get Grandma out of there.

And now we were on the way back home, and she had been quiet after I shouted, until she finally breaks the silence.

"Jaanu mein inko.. Ye zyada modern ladkiya bhi haath se nikal jave. Inki doar kass k rakhni padhe hain.. Mein toh bass.." she starts to speak but I interrupt her.

(I know. These modern girls can get out of your hands if you don't keep them tied.. That's why )

"Dadi ab voh iss ghar mein aavegi toh usko khush rakhna mera kaam or agar aap ne usko kuch bola toh mene uske saath kahin baahr rehn lg jana ve.." I say making my point clearer.

(Grandma, now when she comes to this house, it's my responsibility to keep her happy and if you say something that threatens her happiness, I'll move out.)

I say pressing the accelerator as she gasps.

"Dimakh khrab hogya se k chore?" she shouts looking wide eyed.

(Have you lost your mind, boy?)

"Haan, ab toh yehi smjhlo.. Par bewajah dukhi ton na hone dunga usko.. Biwi hai maari.. Uska khyal rkhna ton bane hai.." I say.

(Believe whatever you want, but I'm not letting her be upset. She's my wife and I have to take care of her.)

" Toh apne maa baap ko chod dega uske khatir?" she says.

(You'll leave your parents for her?)

I wanted to say that my parents were not the reason. She was.

But I just honk as the guard runs to open the main gate to our mansion. I press on acceleration and drive inside parking the car.

"Aap chaliye.. Mein aaya.." I say and she nods opening the door and walking out.

(You should go.. I'll be out soon.)

She shuts the door as I unbuckle my belt and lean forward on the steering wheel, closing my eyes shut.

I just hope Jeet is okay.

I get up and pick up my phone, dialing Samayra.

The phone rings..

Once..

Twice..

And so many times until it stops.

I call again..

And then again.

I throw the phone on the seat beside me and put the car in reverse. Chetan's car honks as it drives in.

Well, he did leave before me so I must have overtaken his car in rage.

"Where to, bro?" Chetan shouts lowering his car window.

"Be right back." I say and drive my car out of the gate and onto the road.

I drive past the heavy traffic and see a cop flag me down.

I press on breaks and come to a hault pulling the window down.

"Mr. You were going at a 100 in a 60 zone and your belt seems to be missing.." he says and I was about to reply when he starts again.

"Don't threaten me about calling some senior officer or bribing. I'll add some serious charges to the challan (ticket). Get down and show me the papers." He says confidently and I just pull my badge from the back pocket and hand it to him.

"It was an emergency.. But thank you. Looks like the guy I was chasing escaped.. So yeah.. What were you saying?" I say as he looks down at my badge in his hand.

"I.. sir.. That.." he starts blabbering. I look at his name on the metallic little plate and speak.

"Officer Parekh.." I say and slowly take my badge from his shaking hands.

"I.. Sir.."

"If you'll excuse me.. I'm in a hurry..." I say and put away the badge, tying my seatbelt pointing to where his arm was resting on the side of my car.

He quickly picked it up and stood in attention position saluting me. I just nodded and drove away with the guilt of doing something very unlawful clawing at my heart.

But also I've never been so thankful for being a cop ever.

Imagine getting a speeding ticket when the whole family is preparing for your wedding and considering I would have almost argued in my raging anger.

I think, I would have ended in prison.

I was a street away from Samayra's house when my phone rang. I reached out and looked at the screen.

Samayra calling.

I immediately accept it on speaker.

"Hey..How are you? How's your dad?" I ask worried.

"He's okay.." she says and something in her voice nudged the detective side in me.

She has been crying. I think.

"I'm almost outside your house. I'll be there." I say taking the final turn.

"No.. I don't want Grandma to.."

"She isn't with me. I dropped her home. I'm here alone." I say and enter the gate decorated with roses, marigolds and fairy lights, wide open for the guests coming in for sangeet.

"But Ambar.."She says and I pick up the phone turning the speaker off and putting it on my ear as I open the car door and walk out.

"Say it, Samayra.. What's wrong?" I say and walk through the small cemented pathway made as a crossing through the decorated lawn.

I am met with silence from the other side as I walk in the main door and I could see all of them gathered in Jeet's room through the open door from the living room.

I turn to look at Samayra standing behind the stairs with the phone on her ear. She looks at me and I just nod. She nods back hanging up the phone.

I walk in and see her mother wiping her tears, standing on the side of the bed with Sabina, with Jeet sitting up on the bed, leaning on the pillow with his legs spread out.

"Sir.. I mean.. Dad... Are you okay?" I ask and everyone turns to look at at me.

"So you care, now?" Sabina speaks.

"Back off, Sab.." I hear my wife's voice behind me as Samayra enters the door and comes to stand infront of me like a shield.

"He's more important to you than your father? Hell.. Jeet isn't my real father and I'll choose him over my husband anyday." Sabina responds.

"Because your husband is a pile of crap.." Samayra shouts back as her mother speaks.

"Shut up, both of you. You aren't teenagers. Don't act like it." She says and both of them immediately bow their heads down. I turn to look at my father-in-law.

"Dad.. I'm so sorry.. for whatever happened out there. Grandma can get out of hand, sometimes but I promise you, I won't let her hurt your daughter. She's my responsibility and I'll always try my best to keep her happy.. Nomatter what.." I say in all sincerity.

"Except when she's irritating the hell out of you.. Then you have my permission to irritate her back.." Jeet says and laughs at his own joke.

"Daadd.." Samayra gasps.

"What.. I can't let this innocent soul be left weaponless with you.." Jeet says.

"She can be a monster when she gets hangry.." Jeet continues with a smile and I laugh, a bit confused.

"Okay, Dad. That's enough. Go to sleep." My wife orders.

"No.. I'm not sleeping. We are having you sangeet ceremony. I need to dance away the steam." He says and his wife speaks.

"Don't plan on ways to get yourself killed. Stay in bed. Got it.. We'll just start dinner for the guests. They can just eat it and leave." She says.

"Now you see Ambar. That's where your wife gets her attitude." Jeet says gesturing at his wife with his eyes.

" Yes.. But I didn't get when you said 'Hangry'. What does that mean?" I ask.

"Hungry plus angry..But For her it's angry because hungry." My mother-in-law speaks.

"Makes sense.. I just came back to check on you all. I should get back." I say and take a step to touch Jeet's feet.

"God bless you, son." He says and then I do the same for my mother-in-law, Naina.

"May God give you the patience to deal with our daughter.." she says jokingly.

"Mooomm.. That's enough.. both of you.." Samayra says and looks at me.

"Let's go.." She says and I turn to look at Sabina.

"Good night.." I say and she just nods. We walk out into the living room and towards the main door.

"You coming with me?" I ask and her eyes widen as if shocked.

"No way.. Not until tomorrow." She says as we walk towards my parked car.

"Yeah.. I guessed so.. Plus I don't have the box of tissue papers in my car right now, for you to cry on.. It's almost like a necessity when taking you away from your mom and dad.." I say jokingly as we reach behind the other two parked cars away from any eyes.

"Yeahh.." she says and then sniffles a little.

"Hold on.. Ayra.. You crying?" I say and turn to look at her. I sweep the hair away and bend down to put my head to her height.

"I just.. I can't.." she says wildly shaking her head.

"Hey.. Come here.." I say and pull her into my arms, in a warm tight hug.

"His BP rose so much..*sobs* in mere moments..*sobs* I gave him the injection..*sobs* He didn't respond immediately.*sobs*. I thought...*sobs thrice* I lost him.." Samayra speaks crying in my arms as I rub her back trying to console her.

"He's fine.. He's here.. He's a strong man. Nothing's gonna happen to him. Sssshhh.." I say and she doesn't respond.

She keeps crying in my shirt and I let her.

I hold her for around 10 minutes, standing there.

"I'm sorry.." she says wiping her tears and pulls out of the hug leaving me cold, taking her warmth away.

"I am usually unable to cry infront of anybody.. I just.. It was.." She goes to say.

"It's okay. I'm here.." I interrupt her and hold her hair back looking at her face.

I couldn't help but laugh.

"What's wrong?" She asks touching her face and I hold my shirt away from my body, as she notices the turmeric paste that was previously dry but now again wet with her tears.

"Oh my God.. I have turmeric on my face.." She says and I laugh louder.

"And Mascara running down your eyes. Go wash your face before Danish sees and gets scared for life.."

"Shut up.." she says and I try to muffle my laughter as a chuckle escapes.

She grips my shirt tightly and pulls me down, smashing her lips on mine.

The kiss was passionate and lasted until we were out of breath.

"You have super stay Matte lipstick on your lips. Don't let anybody see you like this.." She says and winks setting my shirt collar right, before pulling away from me.

"What the.."

"Use a good make-up remover or just... coconut oil.." she says and walks away as I couldn't help but smile at the she-devil I just married. I could remember the feeling of her soft lips on mine too fresh and too special along with her misty fragrance as I looked at her walk away in that sky blue dress.

One more day. Just One day Ambar.

And she'll be yours.

If she agrees after knowing my past.
