The next day when I woke up, I was all alone. Johnny was gone and he left a note saying he went to buy some food. That left me and Ponyboy.

He was still asleep so I decided not to wake him. I went outside to check out the weather.

It was breathe taking. I have never been in the grasslands and never saw something so golden. the fields were full of wheat and there weren't any buildings in sight.

"Beautiful isn't it?" A voice behind me startled me. Ponyboy was awake apparently.

"Ponyboy! You scared me!" I looked at the fields, "I have never seen anything like it,"

"Tell me something. And I want you to be sincere. Do you... do you like Johnny? Is that why you stabbed your brother to save Johnny?" He looked at me. I didn't feel like lying so I told him the truth.

"Yes. The first time I saw him I fell in love. I didn't realize it before but that is when I started acting and dressing like a greaser," I looked at him and tried to read his face. He seemed..thoughtful.

He leaned on the rail, "I bet he likes you too," he looked back at the fields.

Just then I heard someone come from behind. I turned and saw Johnny with a bag taking stuff out.

"Went to town to buy some food...baloney, bread...." Ponyboy went to help him.

I picked up a book, "Hey is this Gone With the Wind? I love this book!" I said.

"Oh yeah. Ponyboy is always talking about it. So i bought it and figured that Ponyboy will read it to us," he looked and Ponyboy.

"Johnny...is this hair dye? Oh no..no no no no," Ponyboy's hands flew to his hair, "Not my hair!"

"The newspaper will have our descriptions. The fuzz will be looking for us," Johnny looked at me, "Sorry Candy. This means you too,"

I groaned. I love my hair! I have never imagined it being different.

Johnny took out his switchblade, "Who wants to go first?" He grinned all though all of us felt lousy.

Ponyboy sat in the chair in front of Johnny facing away from him. "Now Ponyboy, this is my first time. I have never cut anyone's hair before," Johnny turned to me "Have you ever cut hair? Because if you had, I think you should do all the cutting," He handed me the switchblade. I took it only because I have done it before.

I carefully grab hold of a piece of Ponyboy's hair. I started cutting and when I was done, I thought I did a pretty good job. His hair looked as short as the rest of the soc guys have theirs.

"Can I see it now?" Asked Ponyboy.

"No. First dye your hair," Johnny handed him the hair dye and led him outside.

Johnny came back inside and looked at me. "You're going ot have to cut my hair too," He looked at me willingly, "You're not going to hurt me with that switchblade right?" We laughed.

He sat down and I started on cutting. Even more carefully so I won't cut him or hurt him.

"I remember," he said, "I remember the day you punched your brother in the face just to protect me. I-I couldn't get you out of my mind and...." Suddenly Ponyboy came running in.

"Johnny! My hair is horrible!" he was now a blond. I tried really hard not to smirk.

"Oh Ponyboy ya don't look that bad! I think you look good as a blond..." I started to say. Johnny burst out laughing and soon Ponyboy and me joined in.

"Candy it's your turn in the hair salon!" Johnny said.

"Fine but make it shoulder length," I handed him the switchblade and sat in the chair. Carefully he grabbed my hair and started cutting. I saw my dark hair falling down on the floor.

"Candy your hair is so smooth....." Johnny made me blush. I took care of my hair.

He told me to go outside and dye my hair. I reluctantly did so and wait for it to dry. Johnny came out with a broken mirror and held it out for me.

"Oh no. My hair is..is ruined," I groaned.

"Oh come on! It don't look half as bad. I like it..." he grabbed some of the hair in my face and put it behind my ear, "Either way you still look beautiful,"

We were both staring at each other and blushing for what felt like forever. That's when Ponyboy came from behind and whispered something in Johnny's ear. They were saying something I couldn't hear so I suggested that we eat.

The rest of the day the boys taught me how to play cards and other games and soon enough I was joining in. Later Ponyboy read us chapter 1 from the book.

Before I knew it, the sun was setting outside. I stared out the window.

"Do ya'll wanna go outside and see the sunset?" Ponyboy asked. We agreed.
