''It's my day off today.''

Y/n's smile dropped as she stood in front of Minho's hammock. ''What?''

''Yeah. Newt wanted me here to greet the Greenie in case he decides to run to the Maze.'' Minho admitted as he sat in his hammock, looking up at Y/n. ''You know why he's worried, right?''

''Funny. You're hilarious.'' Y/n felt like it was going to be a long day. Minho had run without her plenty of times. They usually had their days off aligned so they wouldn't have to swap partners around. But the only time she'd had run with someone else was Ben, and as far as she knew, he had his day off as well. ''Who am I gonna run with, then?''

Minho sighed. ''Lucas volunteered.'' To be fair, Y/n didn't know much about Lucas, so she couldn't judge him as a running partner. ''Sorry, I tried to get Newt to give you a day off as well, but he said we couldn't have too many Runners out of the maze at once.''

''It's fine.''

''You look disappointed.'' Minho couldn't help but smirk. ''Are you going to miss me that much? Don't worry, shebean, I'll greet you at the walls if you want.''

''Uh, no thanks. I'm finally catching a break from your sarcasm and I'd like to enjoy it.''

''You know you wouldn't survive this place without my persona.''

''Yeah, sure.'' Of course, Minho was right and both of them knew it, but Y/n's pride didn't allow her to say it out-loud. ''Are you gonna eat with us?''

''I was thinking of catching some more sleep, but if you want me to come that bad.''

''Shut up.''

After eating breakfast and grabbing their waters and lunches, the Runners made their ways to their assigned exits. Minho, as promised, walked with her to the south door, where Lucas was already waiting.

''So I really am running with the girly today,'' Lucas commented, causing Y/n to rise an eyebrow. ''Almost didn't think you'd let her out of your clutches, Minho.''

Y/n missed the wide-eyed look Minho gave Lucas before speaking. ''Shut up, shuckface. Make sure she doesn't get lost.''

''I've never gotten lost before.'' Y/n turned to Minho in protest.

''There's always a first time.''

''Whatever.'' The doors opened and Y/n looked at Minho. ''See you later, shank. C'mon, Lucas.''

Minho stood at the door and watched them run in, waiting until they rounded the corner and disappeared from sight. He stood there for a moment longer before finally turning on his heel and making his way back to his hammock.

Y/n and Lucas ran at a steady pace, little to no conversation between them. Y/n didn't know what to talk to him about, and she honesty couldn't even bring herself to try to get to know him. The friends she had were enough in - Minho, Newt, Alby and occasionally Ben were a great company. Hell, Minho usually equaled to ten friends, so really, she didn't care about the rest.

''We should sit down and eat, I'm starving,'' Lucas said at a little past twelve and the two sat down against the wall, munching on their bland sandwiches. ''So, like, what's the deal with you and Minho?''

Furrowing her eyebrows, Y/n gulped down the bite she'd taken and looked at Lucas. ''What do you mean?''

Lucas gave her a look. ''C'mon, now. That shank never leaves your side - did you see his face when we left? He was about to run after us with no gear and provisions.''

Y/n scoffed. ''Yeah, right. We're, like, best friends. That's all.'' There was a weird feeling in her chest as she said that, but she ignored it.

Scoffing, Lucas turned back to his sandwich. ''Yeah, okay. Just don't say that in front of Minho or you'll break his fragile little heart.''

Before Y/n could retort back, a faint machinery noise was heard from not too far, causing both runners' eyes to widen. ''Shit, is that . . .?''

''Griever.'' Lucas returned her whisper and quickly picked up his food and sandwich, shoving them in his backpack. ''C'mon, we have to get out of here. Quick!''

Y/n followed suit as the two ran as fast and as quiet as they could. The noise however followed them, causing Y/n's heart to beat triple it's normal speed. How close was the Griever? Did it actually know they were there? Was she about to actually get run over by a Griever? Torn apart? Eaten? She didn't want to imagine it as she's followed Lucas, soon enough noticing the pattern he was running in.

''We can't lead it back to the Glade!'' Y/n whisper-yelled as she took a right instead of a left, going down a different path. ''C'mon, we can loose it in section eight!''

Lucas was skeptical but he'd rather not get his ass kicked by Minho, so he followed along. The noise seemed to get closer before it finally faded in the back. Once they realized it was off their trail, they decided to return to the Glade and report to Minho, deeming it too dangerous to go back to their section for the day.

They ended up entering the Glade, though from another entrance. Y/n looked around, noticing Minho and Newt walking around with an unknown boy, probably the Greenie. Quickly, the two ran over. ''Minho!''

All three boys turned around, hearing Y/n's voice. Minho couldn't help but smirk. ''I know you must've missed me that bad, but that doesn't mean you can-''

''There was a Griever,'' Lucas cut Minho off, causing his smirk to fall.

''A Griever?'' Newt asked in confusion. ''During the day?''

''What's a Griever?''

''Did you see it?'' asked Minho, ignoring the Greenie.

''No, thankfully.'' Y/n shook her head. ''But we heard it. It was real close and it chased us all the way to section eight. We lost it around there.''

Newt nodded. ''Good thing you came back. But a Griever during the day? Has that happened before?''

''No.'' Minho shook his head, looking at Y/n and Lucas. ''What could the Creators want with letting a Griever out in broad daylight?''

''Maybe that's what got Theo last time,'' Y/n suggested and noticed the Greenie's eyes widen. Newt gave her an alarmed look before he took the Greenie away so he won't hear more disturbing things in his first hour at the Glade.

''A Griever during the day . . .'' Minho thought out-loud.

''Should we go back in?'' asked Lucas, causing Minho to look at him with his eyebrows raised.

''Ya wanna get your ass eaten by a Griever, shank? No, take the rest of the day off, help around or something.''

Lucas embraced the sudden day off, thanking his Keeper and running off to take off his gear. Y/n, however, remained by Minho's side, watching as he continued thinking. His eyes moved from the ground to her. ''You okay?''

''Me?'' asked Y/n in surprise. ''Yeah. Got scared and all, but it didn't properly approach us, so.''

Minho nodded. ''Why would a Griever . . .?''

''As much as you ponder about it right now, you won't make sense of it. We can't know what the creators want.'' Y/n tried to calm him down, putting a hand on his shoulder. Minho looked up at her again. ''How about we go help set up for the bonfire or something. We can think about the Griever tomorrow.''

The two ended up doing just that and a few hours later, Y/n watched from the side as Minho and the rest of the Keepers, along with Newt and Alby threw the lit torches at the big bonfire, starting he fire and so, the party.

''Want a drink?'' asked Y/n as she held one of the jars she was holding out to Minho.

''I thought you hate this stuff,'' Minho said as he took the jar and took a swing of it. ''Disgusting.''

''I do, but I'm gonna get used to it,'' Y/n said as she took a smaller sip than Minho, almost gagging at the taste, causing Minho to laugh. Ben came over and whisked Y/n away, forcing her to join him and a few other boys in idiotically dancing to the makeshift music. Minho watched from the side as Y/n made a fool of herself.

''Hey, uh . . . Minho, right?''

Looking to his left, Minho noticed the Greenie standing next to him. ''Yeah. What's up, shank?''

''You seem close with the girl.''

''Who, Y/n?'' Minho asked. He was already guessing where this conversation was going. ''Yeah, we're close. What's it to you?''

''Is she, like, dating anyone?''

Minho had to take a deep breath, trying to calm himself down. ''Look, shuckface. You just got put in a hellhole that you might not even get out of alive - I think you have bigger problems than getting laid at the moment.''

The Greenie gulped at the words, but persisted. ''That didn't really answer my question, though.''

Sighing, Minho simply walked away. He ended up sitting along with the other Runners, laughing along at a joke that's just been told.

''That was tiring,'' Y/n suddenly said as she plopped on the ground in front of Minho, leaning her back against his leg. ''I need another drink. I'm too lazy to get up, I'll get it later.''

Minho snorted as he handed her his jar. ''Have the rest of mine, I'm not about to be running the Maze with a headache tomorrow.''

''Oh, shit, I forgot about that.'' Despite the realization, Y/n still took the drink and took a sip.

Minho leaned back in his chair, looking up at his friends - all of them were looking at Minho with klunk-eating grins. Rolling his eyes, he looked back towards where the Greenie had been, seeing him now stand with the Builders, but still looking at the Runners - at Y/n, probably.

Y/n's hand suddenly wrapping around his leg caught him off guard, causing him to look back down at her as she laughed along at Lucas' joke. He felt his stomach turning and looked back towards his friends, trying to bite back his smile.

What was she doing to him? He wasn't sure, but whatever it was, he liked it.
