My car wasn't big enough to fit of all of us, so we all climbed into Shawn's Range Rover. My car did have four seats, but the boys complained that they were way too big to squeeze in the backseat. A fight ensued over who was taller, which Jacob lost, even though he was at least 6'0". Jacob then decided to prove that he was stronger, but that was obvious. Shawn was muscular, but more lanky and thin than Jacob. Jacob was bulky, covered in muscle from his many lacrosse workouts.

Shawn drove us, explaining that Jacob had failed his driver's test four times. After the fourth time, Jacob just gave up and gave his car to Shawn. His family was so rich that he could give out Range Rovers to his friends. I know.

Mia was nervous, but she started to warm up in the car. It was impossible not to feel comfortable with the guys, with Jacob singing at the top of his lungs in the car, and Shawn cracking jokes and making fun of him. Both of them were super funny, and there was never an awkward silence.

We pulled up outside Lahaina, the popular ice cream shop by our school. I worked here full time during the summer, but I was switching to part time for the school year.

"Hellll yes" Jacob drawled in a fake Southern accent. I smiled. He was way different than I had thought. Most guys on the lacrosse team were kind of jerks, to be honest. But Jacob was different— definitely cocky, but more of a loving goofball.

I could see Mia looking at him with infatuation, biting her lip as she walked behind him. He turned around and smiled when he met her eyes.

Okay, I'm calling it. They would be so cute.

We got in line to order, while Jacob grabbed a booth by the window. I was still confused as to why they wanted to hang out with us, but I was having fun.

"Olivia!" Jacob yelled from across the restaurant, earning glares from the other people. I turned to him with a questioning glance. "I want strawberry ice cream! The biggest size!" He called again. I gave him a thumbs-up and ordered it for him, getting myself the same thing. Strawberry has always been my favorite flavor.

"Hey, love. How's it going?" The owner, Luanda, asked me at the corner. We had grown close over the years, and she was the one who gave me a job this summer.

"I'm good, Lu. I missed the shop."

"When's your next shift? I need my partner in crime." She said, handing me two giant strawberry ice cream cones. "On the house, babygirl."

"Thanks! And I'm coming tomorrow, I'll be here at two." I told her.

"Great! Now you go have fun." She responded, shooing me away. I started towards the table, but she pulled me aside again. "Those boys are smoking!" She whispered, winking.

I shoved her away and laughed. "Um, no way Lu."

I went to the booth, sitting down beside Mia. Handing Jacob his ice cream, I giggled at his face. His eyes lit up like a child on Christmas.

"Strawberry is the best flavor, hands down." I high-fived him, agreeing.

Shawn frowned. "No way, you're wrong. Cookies and cream is the only way to go."

I scoffed. "Definitely not. I'm with Jacob on this."

"Yes! That's why Olivia is going to be my new bestie. Suck it Shawn." Jacob paused for a minute. "We need nicknames."

"Well, Mia usually calls me Liv."

"Nope, not original enough. We'll find one later."

"No one wants to be best friends with you idiot. She probably likes me more," Shawn teased him. He was always sarcastic, but I could tell that he was really nice underneath.

"Yeah, both of you are wrong. M is my all time," I said, smiling at Mia. She had her favorite raspberry sorbet.

They both scowled at me, eating their ice cream. We kept chatting, talking about school and our classes. I learned that I had math with both Jacob and Shawn, but I hadn't seen them there the first two days.

Shawn and Jacob both looked down. "We were too scared." Shawn admitted.

"I hate math." Jacob whined.

"Wait, if you weren't in class, where were you?" Mia asked, confused. She had only ditched class once, when she got her first period in ninth grade. She was embarrassed that it was late, but I was so jealous. Periods suck.

"Music room." Shawn said.

"Lacrosse field. You don't get to be the best with lots of extra practice," Jacob said with a cocky smile.

I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, sure. Don't forget we all saw you cry when you lost to Creekside High last year."

Jacob looked horrified, and Shawn cracked up. "See, that's why I like you. Standing up to Asher, and now Jake."

Jacob wrinkled his nose. "I had gotten hurt. I was crying in pain, not because we lost."

"Your ego was hurt, not your body," Shawn muttered and Jacob shoved him on the shoulder.

"Wait, music room?" I asked Shawn. I always thought he was just an athlete.

He rubbed the back of his neck. "Yeah, I kind of like to sing." He said.

Jacob spoke up. "And play guitar, and play piano, and even-" Shawn cut him off with a glare.

"Don't. You. Dare." Shawn said, staring him down with a chilling look.

Jacob wasn't fazed, leaning back and smiling. "Trombone!" He screamed, laughing.

Mia and I laughed too. "You- you play trombone?" I asked between fits of laughter. There wasn't anything wrong with it, but that was not what I expected from the most popular guy in school. Shawn glared at us, embarrassed.

"I hate you," He muttered to Jacob.

We continued eating, laughing and talking. The boys were pretty funny, and definitely unexpected. Mia gradually became more comfortable, until she was cracking jokes with me.

After we finished our ice cream, we headed back to Shawn's car.

I left Mia with Jacob as I walked ahead with Shawn. We chattered on about the next surfing competition. I could see Mia behind me, shyly smiling at Jacob as he not-so-subtly flirted with her.

Shawn and I shared a knowing glance. "I know, we'll work on it." He said.

I would definitely be trying to set them up in the future. Jacob was fun and outgoing, and he seemed perfect for Mia.

Shawn dropped us back at school so I could get my car. The second the boys drove away, Mia burst.

"I can't believe they asked us to hang out! That was so fun. " She gushed to me, and I laughed.

"You and Jacob seemed kind of flirty," I teased her.

"I can't believe I actually talked to him." She said as she climbed into the car. "He looked so good today." She sighed. I put the roof of my convertible down, and Mia put her hands up as she sang along to the radio. Mia and I had the same music taste, and she played our shared playlist with all our favorite songs. I could see her smiling to herself as I drove. I knew she was on cloud nine from talking to her longtime crush.

The second we got to my house, Mia screamed for my mom.

"Maya, I talked to him! We had ice cream!" My mom laughed and hugged her. She knew all about Mia's crush. Since Mia never knew her mom, my mom was her confidant and advice-giver.

We did homework together in my room until Mia went home to see her dad. I watched more T.V. with my parents and took a bat, trying to go to bed early.

I checked my phone as I got in bed, and my breath hitched. There was a text from an unknown number.

"Tutoring?" It said. I smiled, immediately knowing who it was from. I typed "Asher" into the contact list before turning my phone off, not responding.
