The kids crashed after dinner that evening. Kane agreed to stay since it was one of the few times he and Mo had a chance to be alone.

They both showered and changed before curling up on the couch, exhausted.

Kane yawned, glancing at the girl who was sitting as far away as possible.

"You can come over here," he said, extending his arm.

She gave a little smile, scooting into his side. She threw the large blanket she was using over his lap, too.

"I had a great time today," he said. "I love getting to spend time with those kids. We should think of something else we can do."

She nodded, "The summer will be over before I know it, and Dray will have to go to school." She frowned, feeling a deep ache at the thought of the little boy reaching a milestone without his parents.

Kane dried her lone tear with his thumb. She was deep in thought, and he did his best to be comforting.

"My sister and her husband died in a car accident almost three months ago," she admitted. Saying the words out loud made them feel real and she shuddered.

There was the piece Kane was missing to her story.

"No one can tell the weight you are carrying," he said, his hand running along her bare arm. "But Mo, I'm not sure that's a good thing."

Another fallen tear and she pulled the blanket to her chin like she was embarrassed.

"I just need the kids to be okay," she whispered.

"What about you?" he matched her tone, voice soft and loving. "You have to be the most selfless person I have ever met."

She made a quiet noise of disbelief. "You are way too good for me."

"Nonsense." His lips brushed the side of her face. "I'm falling for you, you and your little family."

She took a deep breath, "Me too, but we just need to go slow. I just don't want-" she hesitated.

"For the kids to get too attached?" He could read her like a book.

She nodded.

"We'll take it one step at a time, but I'm here for you. Whatever you need."

She finally turned to look at him and he wasn't going to waste another opportunity. He cupped her cheeks, bending his head until their lips met.

She pushed into the kiss, arms snaking around his back. He made her feel like she mattered, like everything she was doing was valid and important.

He pulled back, resting his forehead on hers.

"Doing okay? Was it too much?" he asked.

"I'm okay," she murmured, eyes closed as a sleepy smile formed.

He smiled, too. He finally gave her some space and he yawned.

"I should get going," he whispered.

She nodded, not feeling very pleased about him having to go so soon.

"Are you free tomorrow?" she asked.

He sighed, "I'm sorry, love. I need to catch up at the shop, and my mom wants me to come over to dinner."

She blushed deeply at the nickname. "Okay. I looked over those documents you emailed me about what you wanted done for your sites. I'll start working on them and I can draft a proposal."

"Perfect," he said, standing and stretching. "I think we will make a good team."

She stood, too, and he pulled her close. She snuggled into his chest. "I know we will."
