"Hailey, what's wrong buttercup?" Madison pokes at my arm with the back of her pen, pulling me out of my deep brooding.
"Hmm?" I avert my gaze away from the white board and look over at her. Mrs. MaryL, my foods teacher, had a home made banana bread recipe written up on the board that we were suppose to be copying down, and baking tomorrow morning.
"You're quiet," she says.
I scoff softly and look down at my empty notebook. All I head written down on the top of the page was Banana Bread. "I'm always quiet, Madison."
"No, you're like extra quiet this morning," she points out. "Are you okay? How did things go Friday with you know who?" She says quietly, looking over at the other two students that sat at our small table.
A small sheepish smile starts to creep on my face, and I feel my cheeks starting to warm up. "It was great," I tell her. "He was.. I don't know." My voice begins to trail off.
"If they were great then why are you so pensive, Hailey? What's going on?"
I sigh shaking my head, "Isa-" I stop and look over at the two guys siting at our table, who are talking among themselves and look back at Madison. "He," I tell her. "Picked me up this morning and gave me a ride to school, and things didn't really go so well with my dad."
She lets out a small gasp, "holy crap! What happen? What did he say?"
"It wasn't anything like that. He actually wanted to meet my dad. He asked him if he can take me out, but of course my dad did what i was expecting him to do and was not okay with it one bit." Madison was about to say something when I quickly interrupted her, "but that's not what I'm upset about."
"Then what is it?"
"I don't even know," I shrug my shoulders. "I over heard some girls talking about him, about me, us, in my first period."
She shakes her head softly, "wait, what do you mean us?"
I smile sheeply again, "he walked me into class because I was late, and kind of made sure that I didn't get in trouble for it."
"Wow. It's getting pretty serious," she says sarcastically and I laugh softly.
"I'm scared," I confess. "What if they're right?" I tell her and she stares blankly at me. "The girls. What if I am just his next fling? What could he possibly see in me?" I ask her.
"Hailey, stop. Those girl's that probably said those things are most likely nothing more than envious, nasty, skank, bitches." I snort. "Don't freak yourself out over something that could be nothing. Take things slow, keep getting to know him. You're obviously someone special if he's giving you this much time. Come on, when's the last time you ever heard of Isaac Matteo hanging out with a girl at school, other than Angela?"
I nod. She was right, Isaac always did have girl attention on him, but I never once did see him hanging around any. Madison turns her head away to continue finish writing the recipe down, when I catch a glimpse of a small blemish at the back of her neck. "What's that?" I arch an eyebrow, knowing damn well what it was already. It's a hickey.
"What?" She turns to look at me.
"That." I point my pencil towards her neck and she quickly fixes her hair so that it isn't so exposed. "Oh my God, is that from Ric?"
Now Madison's the one smiling sheepishly this time, she giggles softly and nods. "No way!" I squeal as softly as I can. "What happen? Tell me everything!"
She smiles and is about to say something when something behind me catches her attention. I turn to look back and see Mrs. Reese the school's vice principal standing under the door frame, but she's not alone, she's accompanied by none other than Isaac.
Why the hell is he here, with Mr. Reese? Is he in trouble?
"Sorry to interrupt your class Mary, but you have a last minute transfer here." Mr. Reese tells Mrs. MaryL.
What! Transfer?
I quickly snap my attention back towards Madison and she shrugs her shoulders looking just as confused as I do. "For someone who you think only wants to sleep with you, he's sure is going the extra mile to get your attention." She murmurs under her breath.
Mrs. Reese leaves the class shutting the door behind her and Isaac walks up to Mrs. MaryL's desk, handing over a piece of paper to her. She takes the paper from Isaac and scribbles something down, handing it back to him. "Find an open seat and write down what's on the board, Mr. Matteo."
He turns back around and our eyes immediately lock. Isaac begins to smile and makes his way over to my table, our eyes never once leaving each other. My smile only continues to grow when he stops and is standing to my right. He grabs the back of the empty chair and smiles, "is this seat taken?"
I shake my head no and remove my bag from the chair, placing it on my lap. Isaac pulls the chair out and removes his backpack, taking a seat next to me. My cheeks are starting to hurt on account of how much I'm smiling. Isaac leans forward onto the desk, looking over at me. "Hi."
"Hi," I greet him back shyly.
He nods and smiles looking to the left of me, "what's up, Maddy." I turn to look at Madison and her face is completely priceless. She doesn't say anything back, she's just staring at Isaac with a blank expression on her face. She's completely speechless. Isaac leans into my right, whispering into my ear. "Is she alright?"
I giggle softly while nodding my head, "Madison?" She immediately comes out of her weird little trance and slowly turns to look at me not wanting to take her eyes off of Isaac. I giggle even more, Madison looks totally star struck right now. "This is Isaac, Madison.. Say hello."
She sticks her arm out over the table, mumbling a 'hi'. Isaac takes her hands in his, lightly shaking it and chuckles softly. "Hey," he says. "Should I call you Madison? Because Ric referred you as Maddy."
She shakes her head and her cheeks instantly start to flush at the mention of Patrick's name. "Maddy's fine," she tells him.
Isaac turns to eye the other two class mates who sit to his right and in front of him. "Find a different table to sit at," he says deeply.
Carlos and Julian don't say anything, they eye each other for a second and then look over at Isaac. "Now!" He snarls and the guys immediately gather their things and leave our table.
"What seem's to be the problem boy's?" Mrs. MaryL looks up from her desk top.
"Nothing."
"There's no problem." Each guy answers after one another, taking a seat at two different tables.
"Was that really necessarily?" I mumble softly, looking up at Isaac.
He smiles and ignores me when Lorenzo and Niko, two more Italians from this school, from this class, take up the now two empty seats.
"What's up, KP." Niko, the taller of the two says as he takes his seat. Isaac doesn't greet the boys back verbally, he simply nods, doing a little bro shake with both guys. Lorenzo, the lighter skinned guy who's sitting to Isaac's right, reaches for Isaac's notebook and starts to write down the bread recipe down for him. Must be nice to always have someone do your work for you.
Isaac turns to look at me, the smile from earlier no longer visible on his face. "It wasn't necessary," he says softly, trying to keep his voice just a little louder than a whisper. "But one thing you should know about me, princess.. I don't like to share what's mine."
His?
"I am not yours, Isaac." I grumble.
"Yet," he smirks. "Have you talked to your dad since this morning?"
I shake my head quietly and pull my phone out of my bag, unlocking the screen placing it in front of Isaac. "But he left these."
Isaac picks up my phone scrolling through my missed calls. I had a total of eight from my dad in the last two hours and three text messages from him. The messages were only him yelling at me to answer his phone calls, I replied to him in between classes, in all cap locks so that he knew I was yelling back. "IM IN CLASS!!" His third message came in about three minutes later, explaining how we would be having a very serious talk when he got home. I k'd him and put my phone on do not disturb.
Isaac scoffs softly handing me my phone back, "my dads still scarier when he's mad." I can tell by the tone of his playful voice that he's trying to cheer me up, and it's working.
I titter, "oh, I bet."
Isaac flashes me his smile and my knee's go weak, "he's just worried, Hail. He's doing what any other dad would've done, he's just looking out for his little girl. I'm not exactly the type of guy you bring home to mommy and daddy, so I respect where he's coming from, why he's so upset." He reaches for my hand on the table, placing his on top of mine. "I promise that I'm gonna try my best to show him that I'm more than just a Matteo."
I pull my hand away from him, "what are you doing here?"
He tilts his head a bit confused, "what do you mean?"
"Here, in foods." I tell him. "I thought you had shop?"
"I did," he grins. "But turns out that there was some type of mistake with my schedule."
"And so what? They stuck you in here instead of any other elective?" I say with a smile as I watch his grin slowly start to grow, and nod yes. "Pretty big coincidence, don't you think?"
"Ya think so?" He says teasingly.
"Isaac."
"Hmm?" He continues to smile.
"You can't just do stuff like that."
"And what am I doing, Hailey?" His eyes gleam with sarcasm.
"I'm not sure anymore.." I admit softly.
Isaac's eyebrows clench together as he notices the change in my mood. "We're not on the same page anymore, are we?" His deep, harsh, voice is now surprisingly soft, but it strains. I get the feeling that he doesn't normally speak in a delicate manner. "What's wrong, Summers?"
I shake my head and try and offer him a small genuine smile, but it still comes out sad. "Nothing," I lied. Truth be told, I could not stop thinking about those side comments that the kids in my first period were saying. I liked Isaac, I felt drawn to him for some strange reason, and that's what scared me. I didn't want to like him, I didn't just want to be his next little fling.
"I'm doing it again, aren I?" He whispers. I softly shake my head no, and Isaac mutters a swear word under his breath. "I over did it, didn't I? I should've listened I'm sorry, I'll fix it. I-I don't know what the fuck I'm doing here, I'll give you your space."
I reach for his hand on the table, placing mine on top of his, lightly squeezing it. Isaac gazes up at me and I smile softly, "I'm suppose to be the anxious one here, not the other way around."
He hmphs, squeezing my hand some more. "I'll go," he croons. "I'll have it fixed by tomorrow."
I nod no, "I like it."
"Then why the long face, princess?"
"It's nothing," I tell him.
"Hai-"
"Oh my God!" Madison croaks. "If you don't tell this boy what's wrong, Hailey, I will!"
I turn frowning at her, "tell me what, Hailey? What's she talking about?" Isaac says beside me.
I open my mouth to say something when Madison quickly beats me to it, "she over heard some kids saying something's."
Isaac lets go of my hand immediately and leans in towards me, i can tell he's upset. "Who? What did they say?"
I shake my head softly, looking into his eyes. "It was nothing."
"It's obviously something if it's got you this upset, Hailey!"
I sigh long and hard, looking down at my hands. "Its stupid, I don't even know why I let it get to me."
"I can't fix it if I don't know what's wrong, princess. Talk to me."
"The girls," I muttered. "In my first period.. They were saying things." I can see Isaac staring at me from the corner of my eye. "Like how you're probably only giving me attention because I slept with you." I breath.
Isaac chuckles softly to my right, "Hailey, look at me." I do. "You and I both know that is not true."
"They said that whatever this is, that it won't last. That I'm just your next fling until you get bored again and move on to the next."
Isaac looks away, looking down at his notepad. "And do you believe them?" He says lowly, glancing back at me. "Have I not been anything but respectful?" I merely nod. "Then why would you believe them, Hailey? Why would you let them get to you?" He irks.
"Because this is not normal, Isaac! You are not just some normal guy! You're Isaac Matteo! You don't date.. especially not girls like me!"
Isaac doesn't say anything, instead he chuckles while shaking his head. It almost sounds menacingly. He grabs his backpack from the ground and abruptly stands up from his chair, causing me to flinch at his sudden moment.
"Where do you think you're going, Mr. Matteo?" Mrs. MaryL asks as Isaac continues to make his way towards the class room door. He ignores her slamming the door open, and leaves the class room, leaving half of the class including myself, and his two friends stunned.
"What the hell just happened?" Madison mumbles.
I turn to look at her, a weak smile on my face, tears welded up in my eyes and shrug my shoulders. "I don't know."
