"She's awake now." Doctor Gilbert said as her hand rested on my shoulder. "I'll take you to her." She said so I followed her.

"How long does she have?" I asked and the doctor briefly closed her eyes.

"Any day now. It's a miracle that she's still alive at this point." She said softly.

"I thought she had longer." I said in confusion.

"She hides her pain very well. The cancer has spread to almost every organ in her body." The doctor explained. "I don't think she'll make it through the night."

Everything stopped around me and I could hear myself breathing. My eyes was wide in shock and a tear slipped from my eye. This can't be it.

"Can I see her?" I asked and the doctor nodded.

I opened the door and spotted Joan's tiny body curled up under a blanket. I went to sit next to her and she painfully turned her head to watch me.

"Thank you for last night." She said softly.

"I got you something." She said with a smile on her face. "I left it in your top drawer." She said weakly.

I couldn't respond to anything she said so I just listened. The lump in my throat was growing bigger and bigger with each second that passed.

"I love you so much." She said before placing her small hand in mine.

"I love you too." I said softly before placing a kiss on her forehead.

"Tell Dom that I love him." She said under her breath and I nodded. I could tell that she was crying.

"My everything." She breathed out tiredly.

She rested her head on my chest and I cried silently. Joan would look up at me every once in a while almost as if to make sure if I was real. And when the evening came I switched the light off before pulling her into my embrace. I listened to her breathing stop and I knew that she was gone.

I gently shook her but she didn't respond. My heart shattered to pieces when I looked at her lifeless body. She seemed so peaceful.

Her long eyelashes softly caressed her milky skin and her long curly hair spread out around her face and shoulders. I held onto her body while I cried for her.

And after numerous failed attempts of waking her up doctor Gilbert entered the room. I silently left Joan's room, knowing that I had to leave her. Knowing that I would never see her again or hear her beautiful laughter ever again.

~

A month had passed since Joan's funeral and none of us were coping without her. I wasn't alive anymore I was just weeping.

I drove home from work while the wind blew through my hair. I loosened the tie around my neck before pulling a cigarette out of my pocket.

I started smoking and memories of Joan flooded through my mind. Her beautiful brown orbs haunted me, I saw them wherever I went. Everything reminded me of her and just when I think I'll be fine something as stupid as a song on the radio pulls me right back to the edge. This has been torture, I can't take the pain anymore.

I parked in my driveway and climbed out of my car. I went into my house and headed upstairs to my room.

I opened my top drawer and noticed an envelope on top of a black box. I've been dreading and avoiding this moment. I carefully took her gift out and closed the drawer afterwards.

I opened the box and inside was a golden necklace with her fingerprint on it. Our initials was carved onto the back and I smiled softly.

I opened the envelope and saw that it was a letter from Joan.

Dear Louis.

There is so much that I wanted to tell you so I tried to fit it all in one letter.

Let me start by saying that I never knew I had it in me to love somebody as much as I loved you. You were my first and last love.

I would've spent an eternity with you, if possible. I would've told you that I love you every single day. And now I'll spend a lifetime waiting for you. Because I know I'll see you again someday.

I will never leave you, Louis. I will always be there, whenever you need me just remember me and all of the things we used to do.

Appreciate the little things in life. Like calling your mom once or twice a week and visiting Chelsea every once in a while. Forgive your father. Because it's in these moments that we spend with the people we love that we find ourselves again.

Let love light the road you're walking. Because igniting your heart will eventually set you free. I love you, Louis.

P.S. I miss you too,

Joan.

I placed the letter on my nightstand before running a hand through my hair. I bit back the tears that threatened to escape my eyes.

I stood up from my bed and grabbed my already packed suitcases from out of my closet. I took them downstairs before going back up to my room.

I grabbed the letter and the necklace before heading downstairs again. I opened my front door before I placed my baggage outside. I locked the door behind me and placed my bags into my trunk.

I'm going to Africa to continue Joan's water project. Eritrea to be precise, the country has such a rich and colourful history that it would be my pleasure to help them.

Joan always wanted to go. She's the main reason why I'm trying to be better.

I drove to the airport while listening to faint music on the radio. And all I could think about was Joan.

The best part was waking up next to her. My brown eyed beauty. Feeling her warmth as she laid on top of me only made me fall deeper in love with her. The smell of her perfume was my drug and I loved the high.

Now looking back on everything that happened I wouldn't change a thing about it. She taught me how to love.

And I will never love another again. And I'm perfectly fine with it being this way.

Our journey isn't over yet, it has just begun. I had the privilege to know the most beautiful soul and the world deserves to know her name.

This is my story and Joan Gibbs will always be apart of it.
