Chapter 38.

*****

I kicked the ball over to Ezra.

"Look at me, Alex!" He called. I watched him do a couple of tricks with the ball before he stopped and smiled at me.

"That so cool, Ezra!" I said genuinely surprised. He grinned beaming. He's seven. He plays better soccer than most of the people in my high school soccer team did. "When did you learn that?"

"Um, the other day. I was watching TV." He said a little shyly.

He kicked the ball back over to me. We were in the backyard just kicking the ball back and forth and sometimes trying to take it from each other. Jordan was taking a shower, I think. Ezra and Oliver had been sleeping over and this morning I dropped Oliver off at the mall so he could hang out with some of his friends. I looked up as the doorbell rang.

"I've got it!" Jordan's shout came from inside the house.

Guess he's out of the shower. I turned back to see Ezra running at me and I laughed as I tried to dribble the ball past him but he got it from me. What? I was never even in the soccer team.

"Someone's here to see you." Jordan sang from inside the house. He's being weird. We only do that stupid tone of voice to each other when we were messing with each other.

Must be Sergio.

"Come on, Ezra, we'll come back outside in a minute." I said.

He nodded picking the ball up and we walked in. I raised my eyebrows as I walked into the living room and found Jordan and Sergio laughing. Jordan was leaning against the couch with Sergio in front of him.

"Hey." I grinned.

"Alexander." I leaned into Sergio as he hugged me tightly. "I'm Diego." Sergio glanced at me, "Who are you?" He asked as we let go.

"Ezra." Ezra was studying Sergio suspiciously before he suddenly grinned, "Wanna play?" he held up his ball. I chuckled.

"Really? I thought we were going to get ice cream." Jordan said. Ezra's eyes lit up. I knew Jordan just wanted to leave us alone.

"Let's go!" Ezra yelled.

A few minutes later, Sergio and I were seated on the couch. Jordan had tried and failed to convince Ezra to leave his ball at home so I guessed that they would be playing somewhere for a while.

"What do you want to do?"

"You mean other than just sit here and kiss you?" he asked. I chuckled, "I don't know. How about we go through YOUR picture albums." he frowned.

"Those are at home – not this home." I laughed.

"You know what I mean. My mom gave you my entire life story. Uh-uh, shhh." He lifted his index finger to his lips when I tried to point out that it wasn't his entire life story, "Tell me about you." he said.

"Fine." I rolled my eyes as I leaned back against the couch and kicked my feet onto the coffee table. "What do you want to know?" I asked.

"Everything." I gave him a flat stare and he laughed, "Alright, your friends. How did that happen?"

"Uh, Shiloh and I met when we were five, I think. We got paired up at school, we were so different, but we had a lot of fun together. My mom noticed that I actually hung out with one person and arranged play dates with his mom; I wasn't the most social kid. Claire and Shiloh got into a fight the day she started at our school, I hit it off with her when I tried to apologise on his behalf. They're the type of friends that throw shade at each other every chance they get but are always there if they need each other. Jordan's aunt was my babysitter. We went to her house once when I was ten and I met him over there – his family had just moved here, I nagged her about bringing him over sometime and she did, a lot. He met my friends and I'm still not very social so I try not to cut ties with people, hence why we're all still friends." I joked, he laughed.

"Wow." he said before he got a little serious, "Uh... What happened after...?" He drifted.

"Jordan's mother took me in when my parents died, his aunt had wanted to move and they didn't think it would be good to move me around right after what happened, so I told her she could stay at the lake house."

"Ah. The lake house." he smiled.

"Yeah." I grinned sitting up, he chuckled, "I used to hate it, it was so quiet, so boring in my opinion. All our neighbours were old retired couples or these creepy guys that looked like the serial killers in movies that bring people out to a lake and kill them – basically you." Sergio laughed as I nudged him with my elbow. "As my father's business took off, I grew to love that house. It was our guaranteed family time. I have so many memories there..." I smiled before it fell and I sighed as I dropped my head onto my arms.

"Alexander?" Sergio moved closer to me and took my hand.

"They uh... died one of those weekends. I had barely seen them the past three weeks so I was really excited they were coming home and I would get to see them. I had packed, I was ready to leave and I waited. I waited." I sighed, "And waited... I was excited until I realised our house staff were beginning to look anxious, mumbling to each other about how late my parents were, how they couldn't reach them. They tried to send me to bed but I didn't listen. I became worried, feeding off everyone else I guess. And then we got a call..." I gave a humourless chuckle, "I had been ready to play sad, ready to make Mom and Dad feel so guilty for being late –" I gritted my teeth together trying to hold my tears back, "But they were gone..." my voice cracked. I cleared my throat and forced my emotions under control before I looked at him and shrugged. "That's it." I smiled.

"I'm so sorry." he whispered I looked down. "I guess asking about James now is a no-no." He mumbled to himself and I began laughing. He chuckled pulling me into his arms.

"You're awesome." I chuckled. He knew exactly what to say to change my mood.

"I know." he kissed my temple before he sighed as his phone went off. "I'll ignore it."

I shook my head, "Could be important."

He nodded pulling the phone from his pocket and answering it. "Clyde? Are you okay? Uh... I'm on my way. You're outside? I'm coming." He hung up before he looked at me, "Come with? I swear we'll only be there for thirty minutes and then go to the loft for a while."

"I'll go to the loft or we'll go the loft?" I asked.

"We." he chuckled kissing me.

"Fine." I frowned. He chuckled grabbing my arm and pulling me off the couch.

-----

"Ben, Nickolas is having some trouble, will you deal with it?"

"Why can't you?" Ben frowned glancing back at Clyde.

"The last time Clyde dealt with him, we had to cover up assault charges." Cooper, who was driving, replied.

I looked at Clyde beside me. "I was having a bad day." He muttered to me, not glancing up from his phone.

"When I have a bad day I play Call of Duty in solitude." I said. He chuckled shoving my head so I was looking forward.

We had been at the warehouse for about twenty minutes before we left. We were on our way towards the loft now, I knew Sergio was still busy with work because he hadn't stopped typing or muttering to his men since we left so I was trying not to bother him.

"Chrysler's following us." Cooper's words made Sergio and Clyde look up from their phones.

I turned to look behind us and saw a black Chrysler trailing a couple of cars behind us. I narrowed my eyes.

"Hey that car looks familiar, I –" Wait, I had not told anyone about following Kyle, Clyde knew, but I wasn't going to tell them about it now. Sergio raised his brows at me. "Um... They're rolling down their –"

"Get down –!" I was cut off by Clyde's shout as I was shoved down and Sergio bent over me while we heard loud bangs.

"Stay down." Sergio mumbled. I nodded as the car swerved and more shots were fired.

I felt Sergio's arms tighten around me as he pushed me down onto his lap; my back was pressed to his chest. I covered my ears shutting my eyes as I tried to breathe. Sergio was speaking to me but I was too terrified to be paying attention to anything he was saying, even though it could have been important. I felt Sergio's arm move and turned my head when I heard a rip. I saw that he had ripped the seat to reveal a gun and some ammunition. How had I never notice that was there?

"Hold on!" I grabbed the door as we swerved again and my ears were pierced by the sounds of a gun going off. Clyde was shooting back, so was Ben.

We were in the middle of the city! What the hell were they doing?!

I pressed my ears shut again as Sergio fired out of the window.

"Go left!" He shouted from above me. "Fuck! Copper, I said go left!"

"It's easier to lose them this way!" Cooper shouted back.

"We're headed towards a fucking park!" Sergio shouted. I tensed trying to block out the noise and calm myself down.

Breathe.

If they didn't kill us they would still kill other people. If they didn't kill us we would probably die in a car crash once they finally got a clear shot of our tyres.

I tried to sit up to see what was going on, where we were as I heard screams between the shots but Sergio forcefully kept me down as the screams became distant.

"Cooper, head to the factory's underground parking on sixth. They won't follow us because we would outnumber them." Sergio said.

"But Boss –"

"You're fucking fired! Listen goddamnit!" Clyde cut him off in an enraged shout.

Tyres screeched as we swerved and I could hear more chaos until it faded and stopped.

I felt Sergio let me go and get out of the car as the others did before Cooper was slammed against the car. I looked to see that Sergio was spinning him, he looked absolutely livid.

"Se –" I cringed as Sergio's fist slammed into Cooper's face.

"I would kill you right now if..." he drifted before he slammed Cooper into the car again as he let him go.

I climbed out of the car slowly and realised I was shaking. I clenched my fist and slipped my hands in my pockets to hide it.

Sergio glanced at me before he looked at Clyde as his phone began ringing.

"Find out who owns that car and where I went." He said glancing over at Ben before he answered his phone and walked a few steps away from us as he listened to whoever was on the phone.

I looked at the garage door as I leaned back against the car. I guessed that we drove in here and they drove right by. I began to breathe slowly trying to calm my heart down.

"You alright?" Clyde asked stepping in front of me.

I shrugged in response. "I'm not dead." He gave a humourless chuckle as my phone went off.

I let out a sigh as I pulled it from my pocket holding it tighter than usual to hide my shaking. Adrenaline still coursed through me. I cleared my throat seeing Jordan's name.

"Hey, J. What's going on?" I was trying to sound normal. I froze hearing a sob.

"A-Alex." He croaked.

"Jordan –"

I heard him sob. "A-Alex – he –"

"Calm down, I can't hear you." I said.

"I – We – we need you." Jordan's voice was trembling and he tried to speak through his sobs.

"What – what is it?" I asked.

"It - it was my fault – A - Alex. We – Ezra was –" he was cut off by a sob and I felt my body go cold. I heard him take a deep breath, "We're at t-the Mountainriff Hospital. ER." It sounded like it was all he could say because it was so hard to speak.

"What... Ezra?" I whispered, terrified.

"He –" He sobbed.

I looked at Sergio to find him staring at me concerned, as was Clyde.

"I'm... on my way, okay?" I told Jordan, "I need - I need to get to the hospital." I said.

They nodded.
