Chapter 40- The Test

My hair is wet and sticking to my face whilst I sit on the toilet.

I just took a shower and downed like three litres of water in less than half an hour.

I peed on a stick.

What a great way the human race has used our knowledge. Couldn't they come up with a more hygienic method of finding out you're pregnant.

The instructions (that I probably haven't read properly) say that I do this, and then I wait five minutes.

I sigh and click the cap back on the pregnancy test.

I'm sure this will be interesting.

I place the test on the counter and set a timer.

The instructions say five minutes, so five minutes it is.

I only manage to get 2 minutes into waiting, when my front door burst open.

'Why's your door not locked?' Alice asks.

She shuts the door and storms over to me.

I grab the test off the counter and throw it into a draw. I have no idea when my reaction speed became so quick, but I'm certainly glad it's fast.

If Alice found out I thought I was pregnant, she might actually have a fit.

I feel like if I had a child, Alice might steal it and raise it herself.

Also, Alice can not keep her mouth shut.

'Do you not know how to knock?' I say, completely ignoring her question.

'Of course I know how to knock.' She says, flopping herself down onto my sofa. 'I just don't feel the need to knock on the door of a place that I basically live in.'

'You don't live here.' I say, shuffling myself across my counter so I can stand in front of the draw.

Alice watches me move with her eyebrows raised.

'What are you doing?' She asks.

'Nothing, I'm just... making myself comfortable.'

I am not doing a very good job at not looking suspicious.

She gets up and walks over to me. 'Move.'

'No.' I say.

She crosses her arms over her chest. 'Alexis. What are you hiding?'

'I- Nothing. I swear.'

Her eyes narrow and she opens her mouth to accuse me of some sort of treason, but she's interrupted by my phone alarm.

Fuck.

My stupid self left my phone halfway across the room.

If I want to turn off the alarm, I'm going to have to move away from the draw. And if I move away from the draw, then Alice is going to take her opportunity to figure out what I'm hiding.

She's staring at me expectantly, with her arms crossed and her eyebrows raised.

'Turn it off then.' She says.

'No, I'm not moving.'

She stares at me for a few seconds before rolling her eyes and turning it off herself.

'What are you not telling me Lexi?' She asks. She sounds slightly defeated, although it's not like she put up much of a fight.

'I- um-'

I've got to say something.

'Axcel was asking about you.' I spit out.

Alice's stance changes almost immediately.

She turns and leans against the counter. 'Yeah? What did he say?'

'Oh, he just asked what your name was.' I say, trying to brush off the topic.

I have successfully gotten the subject off me, but that does not mean, I want to talk about Axcel to Alice.

'What did you say?'

'Um... I said that I didn't know you.'

She stares at me. 'You said what?'

'Alice-'

She points her finger in my face. 'Stop trying to ruin my chances of marrying a rich man.'

Then she turns around, walks back to the sofa and flings herself on it.

'Do you think I could move into your apartment?' She asks.

'Absolutely not.' I reply.

I have never shared in my life, and I don't intend to start now.

'Why? We would be such great flatmates.'

'No.' I roll my eyes. 'Alice. Next time you decide to turn up at my door, please call me first.'

'Next time, lock your door. I'm just showing you what nosy old men do. Alexis, don't put yourself in a dodgy position.'

'Alice, I'm busy. Please can you leave.' I say, shaking my head.

'Why do you always have to kick me out of your apartment?' She complains.

'Because you always come unwelcomed.'

She scoffs. 'Fine.'

She walks up to the door, but stops when she is about to open it. 'But don't feel like I've forgotten you're hiding something. I will be back Alexis.'

'Mmh.' I say as she leaves.

I relax and open the draw.

I pick up the test and stare at the results box, hoping that it's not true.

Two lines means I'm pregnant.

Two lines means a lot.

Maybe if I pretend it doesn't exist, it will go away.

Yeah, I'll pretend it doesn't exist.

For anyone confused, Alexis prolly got impregnated in chapter 33 (cause they did it without protection and that) and then found out now so it was a while before she found out
