Imma be honest with you, if I ever had the chance to make a movie of any fictional character, I would pick Mami. The untapped potential this character and her (possible) struggles have is astonishing and I would love to see her try to deal with it on her own in a 2-hour feature film (live-action or anime, doesn't really matter)

I'm starting to really like her, ngl. She gets way too much hate tbh.

"Give me your phone."

You and Mami sat across each other on the carpeted floor, and since you were constantly checking the time, it had been approximately 6 minutes since she entered your apartment but she wasn't paying any attention to you.
You groaned, being as serious as possible when you told her to hand over that phone her eyes were not steering away from. Her feet shifted, and for a second her almost sinister eyes look up to stare at you before Mami looks back at the small device on her hand

Mami: "...Why?"

You looked at her almost as if questioning whether her brain worked or not. Mami came to you for help, and yet, it doesn't seem as if she even needed it. You were starting to get a bit angry.

Y/N: "If you want me to help, then I'm gonna need your phone."

Her eyes went from focusing on the phone to looking at your face again, but she no longer had this evil aura to her. Mami vaguely shook her head before going back to her business.

Mami: "Just give me a minute, I'm texting—"

Not wanting to deal with this any longer, you took the phone away from the girl, which surprised her a bit before she clenched her fists and lunged forward to get it back, only to be stopped by your leg.

Y/N: "Stop. I'll keep it for now and give it back to you later, yeah?"

Mami seemed furious, but it was clear to her that she couldn't win if you two started wrestling right now. You were a lot stronger than Mami and if she punched you right now, there would be no guarantee that you wouldn't hit her right back.

Mami: "Alright, alright!"

Calming down after what happened, Mami sat back down on the exact same spot, but she inched a bit closer to you, hoping to somehow take her phone back by using the element of surprise.

Mami: "...What are we gonna do today? Are we going to meditate or something?"

Her sarcastic tone of voice annoyed you to the point where you really wanted to just kick her out of your place, but a deep breath managed to help you calm down, and your mind got to keep itself away from that thought of hating Mami for a second, and you simply focused on the mindset that she wasn't doing any of it on purpose.

Y/N: "No, I'm here to... help you change, if it's the last thing I do."

Mami: "I don't need you to change me. I thought you liked me this way."

Y/N: "No one likes you in any way."

Scarily enough, your voice almost matched hers. A serious, slightly angry, and with slight sarcasm mixed in there as well, you were almost mimicking the irritating girl.

Mami: "Whatever."

Sighing, you tried to think of a way to start whatever this was, but it was a bit difficult given that you've actually never done this before.

Y/N: "How are you?"

Mami sighed, looking at you with contempt, like she's expecting you to know how she's feeling based on everything that's happened. You had an idea, but you weren't ready to start assuming things until she outright told you her problems.

Mami: "...How do you want me to respond? That I'm fine?"

Y/N: "I just need you to be honest."

Mami: "I don't know. I honestly don't know how I am or how I feel."

A quick response, but it was like Mami knew what she wanted to say. She is no longer sure whether she should be doing this, but something in Mami told her that it could help her, somehow.

Mami: "...Is that all you're gonna ask?"

Y/N: "How are things at home?"

Mami: "...Do I need to pay you after this?"

Y/N: "No, you don't. Just answer the question."

Mami: "..."

She doesn't answer. Mami doesn't want to answer. She realizes that she's being a lot less cooperative than she thought she'd be, but why? There was no reason to be like this, because she really needed to talk to someone, even if that someone had to be you of all people.

Why is it so hard? Maybe she didn't want to show weakness, maybe she just wasn't ready to tell anybody about her mountain of problems.

Mountain. Even if she wanted to tell you, she couldn't. Too much plagued her head and it messed her up. Ever since she was a child, she had a lot to worry about, but how could she tell you about everything that's happened to her and, more importantly, how would you react?

'Why? Why me?', she thinks.

Y/N: "Are you alright?"

Getting caught in her own thoughts, Mami didn't realize a tear started rolling down her cheek and made its way down her face. She quickly wiped it away and cleared her throat.

Mami: "That's weird."

Y/N: "If you don't wanna talk about it, we don't have to."

Mami closed her eyes for a second before she started speaking.

Mami: "...My father, he... always wanted a son. My mom wasn't the one at fault, it was me. I was the one that was born. It wasn't her fault..."

You could already piece things together and realized what she was trying to say. Childhood trauma is, in a way, the thing that could determine the way we live our life.
You were thinking that maybe this is why she behaved this way, but who knows, this is Mami you're thinking of. She could be lying, or not.

Y/N: "Give me your hand."

She slowly moved her hands towards you, not thinking much of it when doing so. Mami flinched a bit when you held them and pulled her closer.

Y/N: "I know this may sound a bit false to you, but you'll be okay..... Do you wanna tell me more?

Mami: "No... I don't... I don't wanna remember her... her smile..."

Mami's voice was just mutter now, almost as if she could no longer speak. Tears wanted to escape her eyes but she held them in, there was still time to go back home and hopefully enter her room before her father sees her.

Y/N: "It's okay, take a deep breath—"

Mami let go of your hands and burrowed her face in your chest, holding your arms and tightening her grip to hold back. She's trying to stop herself from crying, so she would eventually go back to the Mami you knew. That was impossible, because she felt like this was her only chance to feel safe, to cry.

Y/N: "You can cry. I won't say anything."

Mami: "Stop it... Why are you even trying to help when everyone that knows me has already left!?"

She refuses to look at you, but she raised her voice nonetheless.

Y/N: "Because everyone deserves help. And because... because I care, Mami. I care about you."

Mami: "...Do you?"

Y/N: "Yeah, I do."

After a couple of seconds of silence, Mami let go of you and looks up. Tears streamed down her face all at once, and she's a complete mess.

Mami: "I'm crying... are you happy now?"

Y/N: "Here."

You gently cupped her chin with one hand and wiped her tears with the other.

Mami: "..."

Y/N: "Is there something else you need? I can help."

Mami: "So I do have to pay by the hour?"

Y/N: "It hasn't even been thirty minutes, but if it makes you feel better, then you can."

Your face was awfully close to hers, but she didn't care. Mami liked this moment, it was this moment when she realized that maybe she could change for the better, not only for her, but for you.

For you...

Mami: "Y/N?"

Y/N: "Yeah?"

Mami: "Kiss me."

Y/N: "I'm sorry?"

Mami: "You have the chance, do it."

Y/N: "I think I'll pass. I can't just do something like that—"

She didn't let you finish talking, and decided to take the initiative and kissed you. Her weight pushed you down on the floor where she kept going, showing no signs of stopping. Your hands held her hips, and you decided to accept her. This time, you had a feeling things would be different.
They had to be.

Afterwards...

Mami: "Was it okay to do that?"

Y/N: "It's what you wanted, so yeah. Did it help?"

Mami: "...I don't feel alone. Not anymore."

Mami smiles, and this time, she was being honest.
