Flashback Scene

I was cleaning up the shards of glass on the kitchen floor, sweeping them up and throwing them into the trash.

I wiped my forehead with the back of my hand. There was currently a heatwave, temperatures were in the triple digits, we couldn't afford air conditioning so I just had to make due.

After all the shards were picked up I grabbed a mop and started wiping down the floor. There were little droplets of my sweat littered on the tile floor. It was when I heard footsteps making their way towards me I tensed up, but I kept mopping, knowing better than to stop.

I heard him grunt as he knocked over items in the kitchen, I kept my head down and away from him as I continued working.

He chuckled. "This is what I like to see."

I glanced up and saw my father standing in the doorway watching me clean. I turned around so my back faced him, I couldn't bear looking at him any longer.

I didn't say anything and just kept cleaning. The kitchen was looking pretty close to being spotless. I was almost done when I heard a clatter.

I looked back to see that my father had knocked over a Corona, the tiny glass fragments shattered all over the kitchen. .

He chuckled, before he walked over to me. He grabbed my arm roughly, dragging me towards the glass. He pushed me towards it and I had to catch myself before I flew face first into the shards.

"You missed a spot."

I nodded meekly, I put down the mop and bent down to pick up the pieces of glass.I felt my hands quake and shake as I picked up each individual piece. I could feel my fathers beady eyes glaring holes into my scalp. I reached to grab the last piece, but his hands made it there first.

I peered up at him, pure evil shone through him. His lips curled into a smile. He brought his hand up to chuck the shard at me before he dropped it right in front of me. Taunting me with what he was capable of doing.

"I want this place sparkling before I get back..." He turned on his feet to leave. I let out a small sigh of relief.

"Make sure you clean yourself up too." he added. "We'll be having guests over tonight." He left the room laughing manically.

I sat still in the kitchen, as the front door slammed shut. I made a mental timer, to not move for ten minutes.

As soon as I felt the timer go off, I walked over to the front door and looked out through the peephole, and when I didn't see anyone I dashed to my room. I grabbed the bag that I hid in the back of my closet. I searched through it, desperately trying to find the money I would use to buy plane tickets. Relief filled my senses when I felt the couple hundred notes I had been saving up for three years.

I threw the bag over my shoulder and ran to my fathers room, I looked through his closet, then to his cabinets, not caring about the mess I was making. Because by the time he would come back, I would be long gone.

After five minutes of looking for my passport I found it. I quickly opened it and whimpered when I saw that I had a week before it expired, the time to leave was right now.

I sprinted towards the kitchen, my feet glided against the wet floor as I opened the backyard door and ran as fast as my feet could take. My feet pounded with very step they took on the ground. The tears were now flying freely from my eyes, I could taste freedom.

I kept my steady pace, and after about a mile of running, I was huffing and trying my best to catch my breath.

I put my hand on my chest and felt the rapid pumping of it greet me back. I was a couple feet away from a busy intersection.

I looked up at the street and saw a car approaching, slowly. Not even thinking twice about the dangers that could come from this, I stuck my thumb out to signal them to stop.

I saw the brake lights appear as the car came to a stop right next to me. Slowly the car window rolled down, and in the car was an old couple. Both of whom were looking at my panicked state with frightened expressions.

"Yes?" The old lady creaked.

"Ma'am, I need a ride to the nearest airport. Would you both be as kind to help me get there?" I pleaded.

She shared a weary look with what I'm assuming was her husband.

He started speaking in rapid Spanish, and she responded back. They kept talking for another minute.

I looked over my shoulder in fear my father was behind me. My leg bounced up and down as I waited for an answer.

Finally the old lady cleared her throat. "No, I'm sorry dear..."

Immediately a tear fell from my eyes and on to my cheek, "Please ma'am, you already stopped! I'm so very desperate." I whispered.

She shook her head again, but then I heard a click, and the back seat door unlocked. We both looked at the older man. I stared at him with a shocked expression. Wass he really going to take me?

"Vámonos"He simply said. I quickly opened the car door and shoved my shaking from into the small car.

I was still crying as he started driving. He glanced at me from the rear-view mirror.

"Por favor, no llores. Llegaremos al aeropuerto pronto." He sighed. But I could not understand what he was saying. I sorely regretted taking french over Spanish in high school.

( Please do not cry. We will arrive at the airport soon.)

He drove fast to the airport, casually running a couple of red lights in the process.

We finally made it at a random terminal. He slowly pulled to the entrance and I felt tears sting my eyes. He turned around to look at me. I smiled at him and shook his hand. He held it tight in his own hands.

"I don't have much on me, but thank you, thank you so much! Gracias." I cried.

He simply nodded at me, smiling at my use of Spanish. "Take care." He replied with a deep accent.

End of flashback.

Unlike when I ran away from my father 6 years ago, I didn't know where I was. Well, at least I knew I wasn't in Australia.

Currently it had been only thirty minutes since I left Zeke. I was smack dab in the middle of a forest late at night. I shoved a tree branch out of my face as I continued walking in no specific direction. The sticks under my feet cracked with the few steps I took. I grimaced every time I heard the splintering of wood, afraid that it would reveal y location and I'd be at Lucas' Mercy. He had already threatened me about leaving and now that I did leave, I didn't want to be anywhere near him when he realized I was gone. I let out a shuttering breath as the chilly air made an appearance. I shoved my hands in my pocket as I marched on.

I heard an owl hoot and my heart immediately felt like bursting. Did I make the right decision by leaving. Especially this late at night?

I kept walking until I heard a distant rustling. I froze immediately. The noise got closer, I slowly shifted my body towards the noise.

I saw a bush shake and rattle, please be a bunny, please be a bunny. Suddenly a tiny wolf rolled out of the bush, it was chewing on a the end of a stick.

I gasped and I felt my eyes widen. Not a bunny, not a bunny. The tiny cub rolled itself onto its back and watched me, it rolled once more to its stomach and lifted its head. The head tilted to the side, as it watched me.

This was no good, if the baby's here... mama can't be too far from me either. I started slowly walking backwards as the wolf tilted its tiny head once more. Then all of a sudden, it pounced up on its legs and started running towards me.

I turned on my feet and ran in the opposite direction, I heard the wolf skid before he turned to follow me. I ran fast, but I was no match for the cub. He closed his teeth down on the sweats I was wearing, tugging me to a stop. I fell at the strength this little cub held. I landed on my stomach but I rolled onto my back. The cub let go of my pants and jumped onto my chest. I yelped as it started nuzzling on me, the little wolfs eyes drooped.

Was it sleeping?

I quickly picked the dog-like wolf off me and to the side. It growled in response at me. I got up on my feet and stared back at me.

Then out of no where, I heard snapping. I looked around the trees I was surrounded by. Was Momma wolf here? Did I really just survive 24 years of my life just to be killed by a rabid animal?

The snapping continued, but nothing was moving in the trees around me. I shifted my gaze down to the little cub.

Or what was the cub.

Staring back at me was a small child, but that wasn't what caught me off guard. The child had the boy of the tiny cub, and I could see the bones in his body altering as limbs replaced legs. With one final crack, a little long haired boy stood staring back at me.

He smiled cheekily at me. He was unclothed, and had his hand stuck out in a wave at me. "Hi!" He exclaimed.

I felt my world close in on me as I felt gravity overtake my body while I landed thudding on the ground from fainting.
