{ Life Story }

It has been about a week or two since we returned back from California. We stayed an extra three days after the wedding because Alexandro had insisted that he show me around L.A. and other little pit stops we made on our way to L.A. It was really nice and I enjoyed the time I got to spent with Alex since we didn’t have much time due to the wedding. Now we were back in New York and I have a nice tan going on. Giving the time of year, California still has it’s sunny days.

As soon as Alexandro’s parents heard about our return, they invited us over to dinner. Throughout the entire dinner and even afterwards while Alex and I were leaving, they kept insisting we tell them the gender of the baby. However, Alex and I agreed that we will tell the entire family on Christmas Eve while we were all gathered together. At the end, they finally agreed and let us go.

Like I mentioned before, that was about a week or two ago. Today was actually Christmas Eve and I was helping Mrs. Giovanni out in the kitchen getting dinner ready for tonight. The men were out in Mr. Giovanni’s study talking. Mr. Giovanni’s health seemed to be getting better little by little over time, but he there is that occasional time were when he works himself out and he has to take a break. He might not be running a billion dollar family company anymore, but that man can be a little hard head when it comes to having him just relax and take it easy. I remember asking him once why he didn’t just enjoy himself and relax now that he was no longer working. His reply for that was; “I do enjoy myself, as for relaxing….well, I’ll relax when I’m dead.” Yeah, after that I decided to just drop it and not bring it up any more. I’ll let Mrs. Giovanni handle him.

“Dear can you pass me the potatos, please?” asked Mrs. Giovanni. Reaching over a few vegetables, I grabbed the peeled potatos handing them to her. “Thank you.”

We remained silent, with the only noise being heard was the chopping of the vegetables and the christmas music playing softly in the background as we continued to work on making dinner. It felt great and so my element just being surrounded by all these ingredients and making wonderful holiday dishes.

An hour later, Mrs.Giovanni and I sat in the lounge talking about random little things. I was currently talking about the trip to California. I really haven’t had much time to meet up with her and chat. We’ve both been busy with things. I was busy with my online classes as well as the culinary classes I was taking. As for her, she had to make trips to the offices and look after other business projects.

After a while of listening to me talk, Mrs.Giovanni’s expression changed to that of seriousness. “Marie? What happened to your parents? If you don’t mind me asking of course…” I stayed quiet for a moment not expecting her to ask about my parents. Taking in my silence, she quickly spoke up again. “It’s just that you never mention them and I’m curious to know more about you. You are my grandchild’s mother after all.”

“No, it’s okay. I understand...it’s just that it’s kind of a sore topic for me. But you are right. You have the right to know.” I took in a deep breath, preparing myself for this. I never talked about my parents because it still hurt and the only people that know about them are Sammy and Alex. Sammy knows because she has been my best friend for a long time now and I tell her pretty much everything. As for Alexandro, well I couldn’t necessarily keep it from him. He some how found a way to get it out of me and I gave in. Just like Mrs.Giovanni, he had a right to know about my past and I trusted them. “When my mother was twenty-three, she met my father through a friend. According to her, they hit it off pretty great and began dating. Soon they became an item and four months later, she found out she was pregnant with me….She was happy and overjoyed with the news. When she told my father he told her that he would be there for the both of us and that he was also happy….

A week later, my mother found out that my father had been cheating on her and had left town. He never called or even sent any type of letter. It was as if he completely disappeared. It completely broke her….but that’s what makes me so proud of her. It was that fadct that even though she was broken and hurt, she stood tall and raised me on her own. She was a mother to me, but also a father. She showed me that even when you think everything in life is just complete shit - oh sorry,” I quickly apologized. “You could always rise above it and make it better. She was a strong women.”

“So what happened to your father? Did you ever meet him?” she asked curiously.

“No, I never did. When I was four my mother found out from her friend - the one that introduced them - that he was killed in a car crash. I was so young back then that I didn’t know how to feel about. I still don’t… There’s time when I wish that he could have been a man and acknowledge my existence. When I wanted to know and meet my father, but then I think, if he ever cared even for a little then he would have made some effort.” I stayed quiet for a moment, playing with the hem of my shirt.

“I agree with you and for that, I am happy my son did acknowledge his child.” she lightly placed her hand on my stomach causing me to smile softly. “What happened to your mother?”

This part was always the hardest to talk about. I was so close to my mother that I find it hard to talk about her death without shedding a tear, but I tried my best. “When I was fourteen, we had gone out on a picnic. It was a nice day outside and we didn’t want to spent in indoor. Plus, she had been feeling a the last couple of days and we thought it would be good for her. The day had been going great. We talked about how I was doing in school -since it was my freshmen year in high school- as well as, Nick Anderson, my crush at the time,” I said letting out a small chuckle.

“When we were getting ready to leave, she just collapsed. I was so freaked out and scared...I kept screaming her name and for someone to help me.” I felt the tears begin to build up and tried my best to suppress them from falling. “Eventually a kind man came to help and called for an EMT. When we arrived to the hospital and my mother was looked, we found out that…..that she had a brain tumor.” I quietly said. This time I couldn’t hold it and felt a lone tear slide down my cheek.

“Oh, honey. Come here.” Mrs.Giovanni brought me into a comforting hug as I continued with my story.

“She fought for a very long time. Never letting her sickness get into the way of enjoying an everyday life. A few months after my seventeenth birthday, her body could take it anymore and gave out. My mom died….” I finished wiping away some tears that fell.

“What was her name?”

“Aurora Williams.” I answered.

“Such a beautiful name. Like the Roman Goddess.” We sat there in silence, while Mrs. Giovanni hugged me to her.

The sound of the door ringing made us pull apart. I waited, getting my emotions under control as Mrs.Giovanni stood up to answer the door. A few moments later, I could hear the voice of Lukas and Carlos bringing an instant smile to my face. Those two are never apart!

“Ah! If it isn’t my favorite pregnant lady.” I rolled my eyes, but still had a smile as I stood up to greet Lukas.

“Hello to you too, Lukas,” I replied sarcastically giving him a hug as best as I could. Lukas just smiled and pulled away.

“Hello my little nephews! I hope you guys are nice and cozy in there.” I shook my head and rolled my eyes once again when Lukas bend down a little to talk to my stomach.

“Luke, how many time do I need to keep telling you that I’m only having one baby?” I stressed out. He kept insisting that for some reason I was having  boy twins, even when we all said I was not. He’s pretty persistent though in trying to convince us otherwise.

“Look, Marie. I know I’m right, okay? It’s just that the other one is being stubborn and not making himself known. He wants it to be a surprise...I might even be a psychic for knowing this.” He crossed his arms over his chest looking all serious.

Sighing I shook my head, “Alex was right, you are the weird child…”

“I agree with that...Hey, Marie. How you doin’?” Carlos spoke up with his italian accent, stepping around the now shocked and ‘offended’ looking Lukas to greet me.

“Hey, Carlos. I’m doing good.” I gave him a quick hug. We talked a little more about Lukas new found ‘ability’ that had me laughing before Mrs.Giovanni shooed them away to join Alex and his father in the study. Mrs.Giovanni and I returned to the kitchen to check on the food and get whatever was left ready.

I’d like to believe that now, we shared a somewhat stronger bond than before and she understood me better. I was making my way over to the study to let the men know dinner was almost ready when I heard the doorbell ring once again. I halted in my steps to try and listen to figure out who it was.

“Ah! Please come in! I was beginning to worry you all wouldn’t show,” I heard Mrs.Giovanni say.

“How could we miss such an event,” came another voice. I rolled my eyes knowing exactly whose voice that belonged to. Mr.Jacobs. If he’s here then his wife is too, and if she’s here there is a huge chance Sarah will be too. The Jacobs are just not my favorite people in the world. Zoning out their voices I continued my way to the study, not caring what the Jacobs had to say.
