Sarafina leads me down into the underground area where the enforcers were keeping Victor locked up and my heart started to beat a little faster. Looking over my shoulder every ten seconds expecting someone to be there. “Will you calm down? No one is going to jump out at you.” Sarafina says with a bit of annoyance. I try to keep my eyes trained on her back, “Why are you bringing me down here?”

She looks over her shoulder at me and then away as we come into the bigger room. I can hear Victor panting heavily and I know he’s still struggling. I stop walking as fear forms in the pit of my stomach had she brought me here as a sacrifice or something. Sarafina walked a couple feet closer toward Victor squatting down to get on eye level with him, “Isn’t it sad to see one of your own chained up like a beast? I mean just look in his eyes he looks so tortured.” She says with mocked sadness but my own chest gripped tightly at her words. She had no idea what it was like being a werewolf and how it felt to be a part of something. I mean I hadn’t been a part a pack for a while now but since I had found Mikhail It rekindled those feelings. The feelings of being a part of something more, something that I knew deep I would fight keep. I couldn’t imagine what the other enforcers were going through to see one of their own chained up like this. It must be killing Mikhail because not only was it a member of his little pack it was his brother.

I clenched my teeth, “Why did you bring me down here?” I growled a little. She looked towards me before standing back up, “I want you to ease his suffering Elena.” I stared at her blankly for a few seconds, “Is that some kind of code for kill him? Because if it is then you can kiss my ass.” Sarafina let out a laugh, “Kill him? God, no—I don’t want you to kill him Elena. I want you to come over here and put your lovely little hands on him and help him channel some of that power before he drives himself mad.”

“What? How would that help anything? Why not get your boss in here and have her do it, since it’s her fault he’s even like this.” I say back to her with anger. She rolls her eyes and throws her hands onto her hips, “It’s complicated. Some unforeseen things are happening, that don’t concern you.” I give her a hard look not convinced by her words at all. I throw my arms over my chest, “I don’t know why you would think that I’m capable of something like that. I’m just an ordinary werewolf just like Victor or any of them.” Sarafina’s lips perk up a little, “Is that so?” She turns and marches over to Victor and doesn’t stop even when he growls at her. She grabs him by his hair and pulls his head back and I look away to the ground. “Look Elena.” She says to me. I don’t want to see him like this because not only had I come to like Victor it was a reminder of what I could easily become.

“LOOK AT HIM ELENA!” She shouts and it seems to vibrate the entire room making me cringe. I slowly look up and our eyes meet. For a moment they look full of pain and then suddenly there the eyes of a killer and he wants to kill me I know he does. I look away from him to Sarafina, “What is the point of this?” I ask my voice trembling. She has a very serious expression on her face, “You are not like them Elena. You’ve never been and you never will be. Stop being so afraid to look at yourself like there is a monster living inside of you. I’ve lived a long enough time to tell you what real monsters look like and you’re certainly not one.”

“Now I want you to come over here and do what I told you to.” I shake my head back and forth. She levels me with tense expression on her face, “Elena, think of it like a training exercise. Victor will represent your wolf okay? The part of you that you’re afraid of. Now I want you to face that fear and embrace it.” I stare at her for a few minutes and then look over to Victor taking a hesitant step forward he growls at me and I pause.

“Elena! Hurry up or I’ll let him go.” She snaps at me and I can tell by the tone of voice that she isn’t kidding. I take a deep breath and gather all my courage, suddenly I’m moving forward with a determined pace. My eyes are focused on Victor and I can smell his hatred toward me with every step that brings us closer together. Now I stand only a few feet away staring down at him, “Now what?” I ask with a dead voice my eyes never leaving him.

“Now you’re going to grab onto him with your hands and focus.” Sarafina commands.

I squat down in front of him and he lets out a nasty snarl struggling in her hold but it doesn’t seem to phase her. I feel my heart squeeze tight, “I’m so sorry. You are like this because of me, because you wanted to protect me. Everyone is always trying to protect me. I don’t want anyone else to suffer because of me…” I say to him and his eyes seem to soften at my words as if they somehow reached the person inside. I slowly put my hands out. He snap his teeth together but I ignore it and then swiped out at me with a clawed hand. I caught him buy the wrist and held on.

I could feel the power rushing through him and my eyes immediately flashed silver my wolf howling inside me as some of it began to flow into us. I didn’t let go though I continued to stare at Victor watching as he came back to himself more and more. Finally when I couldn’t take it anymore I let go. I was sweating, shaking and breathing heavily. I waited for the madness to come like it had for Victor but it never did.

I finally looked up and found Sarafina looking at me with wide eyes, “She was right—“ My brows furrowed in confusion before I could ask what she was talking about Victor spoke, “Elena?” His voice sounds dry and hoarse. I looked to him quickly reaching out and grabbing his hand in mine, “Yeah I’m here.” His hand squeezed mine and then I watched his eyes close as he feel limp. Sarafina quickly let go and he dropped to the ground. I looked at her with a glare, “What now? Is he okay?”

She stood up and dusted her hands off on her pants, “He’ll be fine thanks you. Now I’ll  be able to help teach him how to control it more.” She says flatly with disinterest. I sigh with relief and let my butt come to the ground as I sit there looking at him sleeping. Mikhail and the others were going to be happy to hear that. I had been able to do something for them. I felt a tiny bit of pride swell up in my chest.

“Of course he’ll still have to remain chained up until after the full moon so we can be sure he’s not going to rip anyone’s face off but he’s well on his way to recovery.” She adds as she comes to stand in front of my sticking out her hand toward me. I grab onto it and allow her to help me up off the concrete, “Why did you do all of that? I don’t understand what you’re really doing here.”  I say as I look her over with suspicion.

She sighs, “Why do I have to keep telling you people this? I came here to protect Eris’ investment that is all and that’s exactly what I’ve been doing.” I still don’t believe her but I don’t know what else to say.

“So how was I able to do that? And what exactly was that?” I ask her more curious this time. She shrugs her shoulders, “I have no idea and no idea. It was just a something I thought was worth a try.” I narrow my eyes at her, “No way. You definitely know something and I want to know what it is!” She looked to me with dark eyes, “I did tell you I would tell you something as a reward but only about your past.” I clench my teeth together feeling frustrated over the fact that she was clearly playing some kind of game with me and I had walked clearly made the move she had wanted me too.

“Fine.” I say shortly, “Then tell me.”

“Okay, okay. Don’t get your panties in a twist.” She says jokingly. I just stare at her impatiently until she finally speaks, “Tell me Elena have you ever heard of the saying ‘Absolute power, corrupts absolutely’?

“Yeah?” I am curious where she’s going with this. She starts inspecting her nails, “What do you think someone would be willing to do to have absolute power? Do you think they’d be willing to kill innocent people? Perhaps friends? What about their own family?” She looks back up to me with a dark humor lighting her expression. I can only stare back at her words seeming to escape me. She looks away again, “And what would that person do if they knew there was something that existed that could threaten their chance at maintaining this absolute power?”

“—I don’t know” I say clumsily. She scoffs, “Don’t play dumb Elena. Not when you’re so close to the truth. Now what would they do?” I swallow hard, “Eliminate the threat.”

“Very good Elena. So now let’s look at it like this, say you believed in old legends about true-or supreme or whatever Alpha’s and you wanted to be that Alpha. There should be no problem with the right evidence and support. However, what I’ve heard from the story is that there are unique wolves who will be able to recognize who it is and when that Alpha rises. So do you see what I’m getting at here Elena? Do you see the pattern?”

“You’re saying that the reason my parent’s died—my pack died—is because they were special like that?” I ask feeling my mind trying to wrap my head around this. “Oh it goes so much deeper than that. Why have they killed other packs? or wolves?”

“Because they’re all from bloodlines that are directly connected to the moon goddess.” Oh my god! My mind is frantically replaying the story over in my mind. Sarafina stands there with a wide grin on her face, “Eliminate the threat and then all that power is yours. It is one excellent game they’ve been playing so far…” She says admiring, “And whoever it is, is the one that made the deal with those vampires but Eris will get him out of that fox hole for you guys, have no doubt of that.” I wish that was reassuring but at the moment I came to one clear understanding, “They’re going to come for me. To kill me.” If what she was telling me was true.

Sarafina tilted her head, “Death comes for us all Elena. You’re going to survive and you want to know how I know that?” I stare at her my body trembling slightly. “Because you won’t be afraid. You are going to be the calmest you’ve ever been. You’ve already faced the real monster which was your own fear. So when they come you are going to fight and you are going to survive.” Her voice is so serious that I feel her words permeate my mind and I can feel myself believing them.
