Maggie

The next day at school, I gathered my courage and talked to Bryson. What's the worst that would happen?

He was standing at his locker, and I took a deep breath. I'll walk up to him and say hi. It wasn't a big deal.

I walked toward him. My heart was pounding, and my palms were sweaty. I reached him. "Hi, Bryson."

He glanced at me. "Do I know you?"

"My name is Maggie, or the girl who ordered a Coke and turkey sandwich."

"Oh, yeah! You ordered a coffee, then switched it to a Coke. I remember now. How have you been?"

"I'm good." I smiled. Well, so far, so good. "So, I was thinking Homecoming was coming and."

A girl interrupted me, walking up to Bryson. "Hey, babe." She kissed him.

"Hey, baby," he said. "What were you saying about homecoming?"

"Um, Homecoming is coming, and you're going with this girl." I pointed at the girl.

"Well, she is my girlfriend. Are you ready?"

"Yep."

They walked away.

"Who was that girl?"

"Beats me," he said.

My heart sank. Can you say crash and burn? I had pined for this guy for four years. He didn't know who I was except for my order. Great. I had to figure out about Homecoming. I couldn't tell the brothers that Bryson had a girlfriend, and I didn't get the chance to ask him. I would never hear the end of it.

It's time to plan, which would take finesse. I didn't need the brothers to find out.

Later that evening, I was working on my homework in my room.

"So, how did it go?" Nash was leaning against the doorframe.

"It went great! He said, yes!" I faked a smile.

"That is great. I hope you have a wonderful time with Bryson."

"Yeah, I have to finish my homework."

Nash got the hint and left. Now to keep up the ruse, which would take work.

Over the next few weeks, I played it off about Bryson. I always made an excuse about having to meet him. At school, I acted as if the guys had missed him. I couldn't reveal the truth. They would never let me live it down. I won't confess that I had crashed and burned.

While I figured things out, the brothers had other ideas, which I would discover later.

Nixon

"I say we have a brief chat with the tool," I said.

"Yeah, but it'll piss Maggie off if she finds out," Noah said.

"Who cares? We're watching out for her, right?" Nathan asked.

"Right," we said.

"Um, guys."

"Not now, Nolan," I said.

"But guys." Nolan pointed at someone.

We saw Bryson with a girl.

"What the hell?" Noah asked.

"Oh, hell, no." I marched towards Bryson with my brothers following me. "Yo, ass-munch! What do you think you're doing?"

Bryson turned to us. "Excuse me?"

"You heard me. Why are you messing around on Maggie?"

"Who's Maggie?"

"The girl you're talking to and taking to homecoming," Nathan said.

"What do you mean? The only girl I'm talking to is my girlfriend." He gestured to the girl with him.

"What?" We asked.

"Yeah, my girlfriend, whom I'm taking to Homecoming. I don't know any Maggie." He looked at us like we had lost our minds.

"Our bad. Forget what we said," Noah said.

"Gladly." He rolled his eyes as we walked away.

"Why would she lie to us?" Nathan asked.

"None of this makes sense," I said.

"She could feel embarrassed. Bryson was her crush," Noah said.

"Whatever. Bryson's a tool," I said.

"So, does this mean we don't have to wear a dress?" Nolan asked.

"That's what it means, little brother," I said. "Now I have plans for our precious Maggie." I smirked while rubbing my hands together.

"This ought to be good," Nathan said.

"This is what we'll do."

I whispered my plan to my brothers.

Maggie

I was at my locker when someone said, "Attention, everyone! Maggie Holloway has been fooling us!"

I saw the boys standing in the middle of the hallway. What did those idiots have planned?

"Maggie has a crush on Bryson Tilson!" Nathan said.

Oh, no. My eyes widened as Bryson walked up with his girlfriend.

"So, everyone should learn how much she likes him!"

Nathan pulled out my journal. Oh, God. "Oh, Bryson is dreamier than most guys! He's so special compared to other guys! I hope that he asks me to Homecoming!"

Everyone stared at me, including Bryson, who looked embarrassed. I glared at the brothers. At that moment, I hated them. I shut my locker and walked away, feeling humiliated.

"Don't go away mad!" Nixon said.

I'm so done. The Gray brothers humiliated me, having read my thoughts to everyone, including Bryson. I walked to their house. As soon as I reached the front door, I ran past Nash and up to my room, slamming the door shut. I wasn't staying here any longer. They were nothing but a bunch of jerks. They were demon spawns, and I refused to stay here any longer.

As I packed, the boys came into the house while laughing.

Nash

I met my brothers as they came into the house. "What happened?"

"Oh, it's payback for Maggie lying to us and getting us to wear a dress." Nathan snickered.

"What did you guys do?"

Nathan pulled out my journal and tossed it to me. "It was brilliant. Nixon came up with the idea."

I caught the journal. "You took Maggie's journal?"

"Nash. You should have seen her face. It was priceless," Nolan said.

Then my brothers stopped talking and laughing as Maggie came down the stairs. Their smiles faded.

"Mags. Where are you going?" I asked.

Maggie stopped. "Ask your loving brothers. They read my journal in front of everyone at school, including Bryson. I'm glad that you found it funny. Was it great? Did you enjoy humiliating me in front of everyone? Yeah, I lied, but I would have never done what you did. I hate you!" With that, Maggie left.

I tapped the journal against my palm. "So, you thought humiliating Maggie was the best choice?"

"Come on, Nash," Nixon said.

"Grow up. It's one thing to mess with someone, but what you did was asinine." I tossed the journal at them, walked past them, and out of the door.

Maggie

"Maggie!" Nash caught up to me.

I turned around. "What?"

"My brothers are idiots. Please don't leave."

"I can't go back to school, Nash. Not after what they did." Tears fell down my cheeks.

"I can help you. Come back inside, and I'll fill you in about my plan." He held out his hand. I handed him my bag. He threw an arm around my shoulder as we walked back to the house.

After returning to the house, Nash and I were up in my room.

"So, why did you lie?" Nash took a seat on my bed next to me.

I shrugged. "I was afraid of what you guys would do."

"Well, no offense. If a guy can't remember a girl like you, he's a tool."

"That's what your brothers call him."

He chuckled. "Sounds about right."

"It was humiliating. I was going to ask Bryson to Homecoming. I had to figure out how to get myself out of it." I blew air past my lips.

"Well, I wouldn't worry about Bryson Tilson. He doesn't realize what he's missing."

"I guess." I shrugged.

"One day, you'll meet a guy and realize why it never worked out with anyone else. Give it time."

"I suppose."

"Let me tell you what I have planned for the four yahoos."

Nash told me his plan. It was genius, and they deserved it. I couldn't wait.
