Chapter 59: "What's the matter, Officer?"

Tristan's POV

I can't fall asleep.

The constant beeping of the hospital machines constantly remind me that this was my fault. That I am the cause of the girl I fell in love with laying here in a hospital bed.

Where's the guy I fell in love with?

Hailey's words continue to ring in my head. I couldn't think straight ever since those words escaped her mouth. And the kiss we shared was amazing, I did not want to stop, but I had to. If I didn't, I probably would have jeopardized the plan.

The plan failed in the end anyway.

*flashback*

"Wait!" Henry calls out as we about to close the door.

"What?" I ask harshly.

"Tristan, may I talk to you... in private?" He eyes Hailey as to say, 'You cannot hear this.'

"It's fine, Tristan. Go talk to him." Hailey says next to me. "I'll wait in the car for you."

I nod at her then watch her walk away, before walking back into Henry's office and shutting the door behind me.

"What do you want?" I ask Henry impatiently.

"I have a plan." He states. "But this plan is to remain between us."

I knew that I shouldn't have went with Henry's plan, but it the only way to ensure Hailey's safety.

"You'll have to pretend that you never like her," he continues. "Act as if you betrayed her, as if you have been working for Luther all along. I'll call him and lie to him that I have a plan on convincing Hailey to join him--"

"No," I growl. "I can't do that to her." I run a frustrated hand through my hair.

"You have to. It's the only way. If you want her and her family to be safe... you'll do it."

The plan had kept her family safe in the end... but not her.

I wish she hadn't pushed me out of the way of the oncoming bullet. I am grateful for her heroic act, but I still wish it had been me who had been shot. I wish she had just escaped the building safely like we had planned.

I had to involve the guys in the plan-- without Henry's consent. It would have been impossible to carry out the mission without them. Even Conner, had helped tremendously as much as I hate to say it. He helped distract Luther while Chase and Greg liberated my love.

But now looking at her, lying in the hospital bed, her life holding onto the beeping machines of the ICU, makes me think that the plan was for nothing.

"Hailey!"  I shout her name with hope that it'll keep her from closing her eyes.

"Stay with me," I plead with tears filling on the brim of my eyes. "Please..."

"Cops are here, man," Jordan's voice says behind me and he pats my shoulder in a comforting manner.

"They found and arrested Luther," Chase informs me.

"Don't just stand there, help her!" I raise my broken voice. "Call an ambulance."

"It's on it's way. I called it minutes ago after I saw what happened." Greg says.

"Don't leave me," I whisper under my breath before kissing Hailey on her forehead.

Luther deserves to rot in prison. Him and all his men should be held captive until the day the grave becomes their new homes.

"Tristan," a female voice calls behind me.

I have been sitting besides Hailey's bed, her hand in mine everyday for the past three weeks.

I turn back to see her mother, as well as mine, looking at me with concerned eyes.

"Hi Mrs Matthews," I greet her with an exhausted voice.

"I told you to call me Melody," she tells me for the hundredth time. "Don't you think it's best if you go home for at least a few hours so that you can rest?"

"Yes, I agree with her," my mother says. "We'll call if something comes up."

I turn to face Hailey, not wanting to leave her because of the guilt of causing her to be here. "I can't leave her," my voice breaks. "It's a-all my fault." A tear escapes my eye.

"It's not your fault honey," Melody hugs me. "In actual fact, it's mine for not telling her about her father."

"Why didn't you?"

"I didn't want her to search for him. It was too dangerous."

"That's sad because they've known each other for a very long time."

"I know now," she nods. "Lizzy explained to me." She gestures to her best friend.

"Go home and get some rest." Mom tells me.

She's my home.

"And have a shower while your at it." She tries to lighten the sombre mood.

"Okay."

......................

Hailey's POV

"Get away from me," I yell and push him away with all the strength I have.

He lets out a bitter laugh, mocking me for my pathetic attempt of getting rid of him.

"Not until I'm finished with you, " he points a gun at me.

"Please," I beg with tears. "D-Don't do it..."

And that's when I hear it... the gunshot.

Tristan shot me.

"No..." I cry out in pain. "Tristan, h-how could..."

"Hailey," a voice says.

"It hurts... w-why d-did you..."

"Hailey," the voice says again.

"T-Tristan..."

"She's waking up. Calk the doctors!" The voice cuts through my painful dream.

I try to open my eyes but struggle. I'm only able after blinking a few times, and immediately, a blinding light comes into vision.

"Hailey," a familiar voice calls me.

I steady my vision and my mom's face comes to view.

"What happened?" I ask but the large lump in my dry throat makes me whisper.

"You were shot honey..." a tear trickles down her cheek.

"Shot?" That's when everything comes back to me. My kidnapping and Tristan betraying me...

"Tristan," I whisper. "Where is he?"

"He's sleeping right there on the couch," my mother points to the couch where a tired Tristan is sleeping on. "He has been worried about you. He really loves you."

Loves me? Wasn't he the one who turned me in? He couldn't even say that he loves me back when I had told him that I love him.

"How long have I been here?" I change the subject.

"A month." She replies. "Tristan called me after you were shot and your father and I came home as soon as possible."

"Mom, is Hen--"

"You're awake!" A woman wearing a doctor's coat interrupts me. "How are you feeling?" She asks me.

"A little light headed." I answer.

"That's normal after coming out of a coma." She states. "We'll give you some medicine to help with it."

"Okay."

"Hailey..." a familiar voice catches my attention. "You're awake!"

In a matter of seconds, Tristan was peppering me with kisses all over my face, unfazed about my mother watching. "I missed you so much," he stares at me with a smile on his face. "I thought you weren't going to make it."

"Why would you care?" I snap.

"Hailey, I can--"

"Explain what, Tristan?" I raise my voice. "You betra--"

A clearing of a throat cuts my sentence, and we all turn to see an officer by the door.

"Excuse me for interrupting but I have to inform you about something really important." The officer says.

"I'll excuse you guys," the doctor says before leaving the room.

"I'll quickly go call your father," my mother also leaves.

"What's the matter officer?" Tristan asks the man.

"Earlier today, the prison security was breached," he begins. "And one of the prisoners escaped."

"What do mean?" I ask, knowing where this is going.

"Luther escaped."

A/N: and there you have it guys! The epilogue. I know it was short and you guys wanted more, but at least I didn't let Hailey die.
