Chapter 37: We all know that I can never be ugly

Hailey's POV

My eyes continue to stare at the blurry streets of houses as we drive past them. Children litter the quiet neighbourhoods, with grins plastered on their toddler faces. Although I'm in the car, I can hear the soft harmonic sound of their transient laughter, reverberating in my chaotic mind. Happiness and joy shine through their eyes, leaving no room for any anger or pain.

I wish I was a child again.

Devoid of worries. With the your only fear being what's residing under the soft matress of your bed. Unfortunately, you can't run forward while facing your back. Life goes on... troubles increase, problems cause more pain.

Instead of turning right at a cross-section we usually take to the Wilder's mansion, he continues to drive straight ahead. "Where are you taking us?" I ask him.

"You've had a rough day, you need something to calm you down." He spares me a glance and flashes me a smile of concern, before turning back to the road ahead.

"Is this the part where you tell me you're going to help me relax, only to kill me?"

"Yes, I want you to relax before I take your life so that you die happy." He says sarcastically.

"Well, I'm still mad at you," I mutter, avoiding his gaze.

He heaves out a sigh but doesn't utter a word. We continue driving with heavy silence blanketing our shoulders. The sun begins to ready itself to say bye to the day, to welcome the coming night. Colours of blues and purple dance in the sky above us, a daily ritual they do before the moon siezes the night.

I realise that we've been driving for almost an hour and a half. The stars now dance in the sky and the moon is now in its rightful place.

"I'm scared now." I say, catching Tristan's attention.

"Don't worry, in two minutes you'll see." He smiles in amusement.

He was right. In less than two minutes, he parks the car. He removes the protective seatbelt and exits the car, leaving me bewildered as to why we're in this certain place.

I mirror his actions and carefully step out of the only place of shelter. The cold but fresh air immediately kisses my exposed skin, leaving a trail of goosebumps. I follow Tristan's foot steps, as he guides me through a forest full of high structured trees. The moonlight seeps through the leaves, sending rays of beautiful light to hit the ground. Owls send signals to one another, probably scouring for their next prey.  After walking for about two minutes, we come to an abrupt stop.

The view is magnificent.

But cliché.

The blue waters sparkle under the low light sponsored by the moon. The ground we walk on coming to end a few meters from where we stand. Tristan smiles at me before take of his shirt, revealing his toned abdomen. Every muscle is in its rightful place. A V-line appears on his hips before disappearing into his jeans.

"Done checking me out?" He pulls me out of my thoughts. He probably noticed a drool descend from the corner of my lips.

"I'm still mad at you!" I state, a little too squeaky for my liking.

"C'mon, can you at least forgive for being a jerk?" He pouts his pink lips.

One word...

Freakin' irresistible!

Okay, two words.

"Really? You were only a jerk?" I quirk my eyebrow.

"Okay, maybe a douche bag and king of all the jerks that ever set foot on this earth."

I laugh. Hard. A tear escapes my eyes as I stare at his desperation and how sad he looked, and boy, is that funny. "Okay, I wouldn't have downgraded you so much, but that works too." I wipe away the last tear.

"So I'm forgiven?" A wide grin spread itself across his gorgeous face.

"Nope."

"Please."

"Nope."

"Then you leave me no choice."

Before I know it, Tristan has me slung over his toned, bare shoulder, heading for the cliff. I soon as I realised what he's going to do, I start slapping and punching his back saying he should release me, but he blatantly refuses and continues walking.

I feel him jump and I watch as our feet are no longer on solid ground, but fighting gravity. Adrenaline violently rises inside of me, and before I know it, I'm soaked. Head to toe. The cold hard splash of water causes by body to stiffen, as the coldness seeps through the thin layer of clothing covering my now soaked body.

I rise above the water and push my sticky, wet hair back. Anger's travelling through every single vein in my body, but I can't help but smile at what Tristan made me do.

Tristan.

Tristan's not in view. No matter where I look, I can't see him. I call out his name a million times... no hope. I feel something by my feet and I begin kicking hard, hitting whatever is under. Before I know it, a figure rises above, grabbing my waist in the process.

"Tristan, you idiot!" I throw multiple punches to his chest, which don't harm him. He lets out a chuckle and his eyes seem brighter, they exude bliss and unknown happiness.

"Ncooh, was Hailey worried about me?" He cooes at me.

"You wish," I mutter.

"You're beautiful when you're angry," he smiles, causing my cheeks to flush.

"And you're ugly when you're a jerk," I retort.

"We all know that I can never be ugly."

"Cocky much?" I arch an eyebrow.

"Only when I want to kiss you." He says that with true intensity, and his eyes just seem to capture me.

"R-really?" I stutter, a sudden feeling of nervousness jolts inside of me.

"Yes." Why is he being so honest? So straight forward?

"Would you allow me?" He asks.

"Maybe." That's all I say.
