Mayas POV

"Of course, we are not. We are only here to pick up the car for the wedding couple"

The sentence kept playing in my head as it was on the replay button nonstop. I was back at the grand mansion where the wedding was going to be held. In what way did he exactly mean it? As in, that it would be so terrible to be marrying someone looking like me. I could not really understand James.

He seemed to be such a well-mannered man when everything was dark. And then when the lights came on, he completely shifted character almost like he was a chameleon. With all the effort I had inside of me, I tried to push the thought of James out again from my little head. This was not the right time!

It was almost time for the ceremony at the church. I put my peach-colored dress on and had a low bun as a hairstyle. My make up was not heavy nor too little. It was just right. My lips were colored in a nude color and I put on my pumps. My feet were comfortable in them and the heel was not too thin and tall, yet it gave me a bit of height though, which was good for me.

The dress was elegant, feminine, and just the perfect fit! Rose was this fantastic bride, who gave us green light to find our own dresses as bridesmaids, although her only condition was the color. For my skin color it went perfect. The other girls had to tan themselves to avoid looking too pale.

Oh, the irony...

I knocked on the door to Rose. I couldn't wait to see her as a bride. "Come in" she said. I walked in and saw Rose sitting in front of the mirror putting on her pearl earrings.

She had this amazingly cream white wedding dress that made everyone else look neutral. I was so proud of my friend right at that moment.

"Rose... you look absolutely beautiful!" I cried out to her in awe.

My heart was melting by the sight in front of me. My friend was getting married!

She looked at me with a grin on her face. "Thanks girl. And you look gorgeous in that dress. You really know how to pick the right dress for your body! The guys tonight will follow you like dogs, you know" she winked at me. I rolled my eyes at her comment. I was not in the mood to meet someone tonight. Right now, I just needed to focus on my friend.

"Oh Maya, I can't believe this is finally happening!".

"Me neither" I hugged her and together we walked out to the other bridesmaids.

As I stood at the entrance of the church, I could see Connor standing at the altar waiting for Rose to come. Before she could come, we as bridesmaids, had to make our appearance along the aisle. James was standing right next to Connor in his grey suit. We didn't really talk on the way back this morning when we had to collect the wedding car.

Eve was the first one to walk down the aisle with some beautiful why lilies in her hands. Then Linda walked. As it was my turn next, I sucked a breath in and started walking. The music in the background was so smooth and romantic. When I was past half the aisle, I caught James staring at me. He didn't flicker nor did he hide the fact that he was staring right at me. I tried to walk a little bit faster now that he made me nervous.

Stupid, rude, racist man who also is undeniably beautiful, smart, gentle, and... Oh stop it, will you?

I mentally scolded myself for thinking all these thoughts. It didn't matter anyway. I was the girl he didn't want.

As I walked over to the side and took my place beside Eve and Linda the last bridesmaid, Olivia, now walked over towards us. I felt like something was burning through my skin.

I glanced over to Connor and James. Connor had his eyes stuck on the entrance of the church to see his wife-to-be show up. James, on the other hand, kept staring at me. Like, what did he get out of that staring? He didn't stare at any of the other bridesmaids. Then I saw something I would bet on was just a fantasy. I caught a glimpse of his lips turning upwards.

No, that couldn't be. Could it? If so, he must have been smiling at the thought of his good friend getting married.

But he keeps looking over here!

I shook my head and directed my eyes towards Rose who was now walking down the aisle in her beautiful dress and with her pretty face. I beamed at her, so proud of her and my heart skipped a beat on their behalf.

They both said I do to each other and sealed their vows with a very passionate kiss in front of us all. Everyone clapped. Now it was time for the couple to do their wedding photoshoot and then the reception would start later.

Finally, the first part was now over. Now I only had to survive the second part of this day. I really did enjoy the day so far, yet the only thing that took my joy away anyhow was James. Knowing that he would be there the whole day made me uneasy and tense.

I looked up from the empty glass of champagne in front of me, looked him right in the eye. "No, thank you" I said. He was the third guy in a row who came to offer me a drink. I was beginning to wonder why the interest in me was so high this night. The first two guys I politely declined without saying directly no. But since the third one now came and asked the same thing, I had to change strategy. I found that, here at the reception, looking at someone in the eyes as you said no, was the best tactic.

The guy walked silently away. The reception went well. And right now, people were chatting across the tables. The wedding toast was held and now it got more relaxing. Somehow, I was beginning to get the picture of, that wedding day would also be a home run for a lot of men and women. I already could see that Eve made quite an effort to get in contact with James. They sat close to each other talking. I could see how she gave him small hints by touching him lightly on his arms and then his knee. I turned away so I could avoid them. Of course, he was engaging with Eve. She was blonde and beautiful and so not like me, I guess.

"Can I get you a drink?" someone asked. I turned to see this guys face. I had seen him all day, but I didn't know what his name was. I bet he was also trying to get laid as well.

Well, not with me mister!

I smiled politely at him and then ignored him. I was getting tired of this.

"Please?" the man asked.

"No, thanks" I replied. Short. Simple. Unambiguous.

"Come on, let me get you a drink. What's the worst that could happen?"

I didn't answer that question because that would give him an 'in'. I would certainly end up engaging with him on his level and once I started answering his questions, it was only a short step before he wanted to sit down.

He sat down anyway and gave me a drink.

"I'm Kevin" he said.

He held out his hand, expecting me to shake it. I didn't do it but refocused on his face.

"I'm not interested, sorry" I replied.

"Wow, that's blunt and to the point".

I stared down on my drink without uttering a single word. I was still not going to give him an 'in' by continuing this conversation.

"Whoever he is, he must have hurt you pretty bad to make you so..."

"No one made me anything..." I trailed off and my eyes caught another pair of eyes looking at me. James was looking at me having this conversation with Kevin.

Maybe this could be a good way to show James that he didn't have any effect on me! I just had to spend my time with this guy and James would not feel like he destroyed me.

I averted my eyes and found Kevin in front of me. He was now so close to my face that I held my breath.

"You're beautiful, you know?" Kevin said. "Despite the harsh rejection, you're really quite beautiful"

"Thanks" I mumbled. I could still feel James staring at us. What was his problem? Was it that difficult for him to see that I was with a white man? Was I not allowed to engage with other white people? Did he think so low of me because I wasn't looking like all the other girls?

"You look quite handsome yourself" I said to him. Then I smiled. I had to get away from James' piercing glare.

So, what do you think? Why do you think James keeps looking at Maya?

I hope you all are well. I'm in a flow lately so I have been updating more often than I imagined. What do you think? :)
