[Speeding along the single lane highway]

"Switching to alternate power, kiddos! it will smooth out the ride!" Logan shouted over the intercom' s speakers, her loud voice sounding gritty.

The rumbling engine died down to a steady purr blending in with the sound of the tires speeding over the asphalt. The chaotic trembling of the seat smoothed out to a slight wave as we traveled over the road.

We have been gaining distance from who ever was in hot pursuit for a long while now.

The plume of dust kept getting smaller and smaller in the horizon as we left them behind.

I sighed in relief, my shoulders relaxing.

We had finally outran them.

" Fucken Shit!!! To the left, to the left..... Fire!!!!" The panicked voice of Logan screamed a second later.

I swiveled to the left, shock prickling up as goosebumps raised all over my body.

Machines hovered haphazardly over the landscape like drunk flying fish as I took a moment to watch them moving over small mounds of blonde sand.

They had split into two groups, the one behind us and the one who had gone around to cut us off. We didn't expect this at all, they had flushed us out into an ambush.(@minipurse)

Pulling the handles toward me the large barrel whirls to life. The glass dome lights up with a round bullseye guiding my eye toward the trajectory of the bullets.

Aiming to the nearest enemy I squeeze the right handle, steadying my arms as much as possible. The barrel heats up red hot as it begins spitting out bullets.

Sand explodes around the hovering machine. The driver swerves and titters- slowing down then accelerating again.

Shit.... I don't think I even hit the stupid machine.

It closed in on the truck at a break neck speed almost hitting us.

A fireball launched itself somewhere from the back of the trailer smacking into the vehicle. My mouth gaped open in surprise before I heard the deafening crack of the launcher firing, spooking me in my seat.

Like a grenade it exploded on contact. The vehicle burst into flames and it crashed into the ground, raining sand everywhere. The occupants screamed in terror as they violently burned.

More enemies careened closer to us passing the wreckage.

Tearing my morbid curiosity from the scene being left behind I maneuvered the barrel toward the pursuers. My focus pivoting to the oncoming wave of hovering machines.

The gun barrel whirled again as I began firing indiscriminately.

Sand pelted the sides of the trailer and the vehicles getting closer. The clink of the bullets ricocheting off the enemy was the only sound I could hear. It muffled everything around me as I concentrated on them.

Sweat beaded on my brow.

In slow motion I saw as a bullet sliced into the interior of one vehicle.

Blood splattered, covering its victims in red and the machine jerked forward accelerating wildly hitting another next to it. It flipped- toppling itself over the other. They both crashed into a small sandy embankment, stray parts shredding over the ground as they flew loose from the crash site.

Fireballs exploded around us, randomly littering the landscape in the immediate vicinity.

Leaving behind a minefield of burning obstacles as we retreat.

They navigated around the hellscape we left behind and zig zagged askewed bullets as I desperately tried to total their vehicles.

The machine gun barrel stopped whirling mid shot and I jiggle the handles confused. (@minipurse)

A small red light glaringly blinks below the glass dome.

I ran out of bullets. Hitting my fist on the intercom fiercely I shout "RELOAD, RELOAD, I NEED A RELOAD!!!"

Waiting in my seat felt like an eternity as seconds ticked by. I could only watch as one of the passengers pushed themselves out of the speeding craft with a long black heavy looking metal cylinder dangling from their arms.

Plink..plink...plink..

Side to side, sweeping over us. Blanketing us with bullets.

They positioned the cylinder higher and higher until it was almost at their shoulders.

Bullets peppered my dome. One lodged itself into my shield, I had turned my chair away too late.

Fuck, where is that reload? As I studied the unfurling paper thin crack spreading over its once smooth surface.

In the trailer below muffled scuffling sounds echoed. A loud grunt then a scrape heard suggesting a closing of a latch, made me aware of the action going on inside.

Two loud bangs underneath my seat and the red light turning off let me know I have a fresh batch of ammo.

The barrel whirred to life again.

Now with a little more practice and coming over the slight learning curve, my aim became more precise. Clipping the enemies more accurately as we sped past sandy barren land.

The resolve to defend our lives strengthened within me as the corner of my eye glanced briefly to the round bullet embedded in the glass.

Confidently I swoop right and left, my bullets shredding off
components from their machines.

The one with the cylinder hit us again. It had slowed down waiting for an opportunity to shoot while hiding in the back of the pack. I unloaded my anger into the handle squeezing hard as I aimed. In a split second decision my hand squeezed the left handle as well.

Bright blinding yellow light flashed.....

The cylinder went flying from the arms of the person attacking and they crumpled like paper. Blood streamed from their limp dead body as it flopped in random directions on the hood.

" Shoot in the front! Shoot in the front, do it now!" The message from the intercom screeched.

The small victory that I felt slipped away from me.

Turning quickly, above the outline of the truck in the road in front of us, a massive roadblock stood.

Piles of junk heaped onto the roadway blocked our way.

At the speed we are going.....

Logan won't be able to stop in time.

Unloading all the bullets and cell power I had left into the pile. The heap started to crumble, starting from the bottom to the top.

Tendrils of smoke rose up and bits and pieces scattered everywhere where I had concentrated into drilling a channel to the other side of the road.

The best that can we can do is run over the space in between the pile and hope for the best.

" Hold on!!! Wooooohh!!" Logan squeaked excitedly into the speakers.

The trailer accelerated even more, pushing me down further into my seat.

Squinting my eyes and stiffening my body as I anticipated a rough transition seeing that we were about to go right over.

The road underneath jostled us into a bumpy wobbly mess, swaying back and forth precariously.

We lost some speed, slowing down as we made it to the other side.

The unmistakable sound of several boosters whined in the air behind us.

It isn't over and we haven't been able shake them.

Even though I have started firing at them again, only a small fraction had been destroyed.

A flying craft swooped above us. The immense change of air pressure almost tumbling the trailer side ways.

If it could get any worse, it just did. I looked up at the sky, scanning....trying to find it.

Its gone.....hiding somewhere high above us in the opaque blue sky.

A column of sand explodes upwards into the middle of the group of enemy hover machines.

Flipping all of them over from the sheer force.

With the flat round underside exposed its mechanical parts kept going furiously, unaware of the direction of the ground or the sky.

The same mysterious plane dived down from the upper stratosphere, with a pulsing hum, skimming across the surface of the ground. Jets of bright yellow light flashed into the group of hover craft strewn on the sand.

An inferno ignited, quickly licking the sky with black smoke. The people who managed to crawl away from their over turned vehicles did not escape the burning fire. They ran across the sand engulfed in flames, charring helplessly.

We didn't stop to look at the casualties.

We kept speeding away. The scene becoming a black dot in the lone landscape.

The speaker broke into static then silence. I looked confused at the intercom. What the hell was that?

" Hello....I know you can hear me... Stop the trailer NOW.....All passengers need to get out....I will know if you are lying..."

An unfamiliar male voice slithered his commands coldly.

" trust me....You have seen what happened to the people who were chasing you...Be smart"

He cooed coolly. The threat pulling cold sweat over my body.

I could feel the brakes slowing down the trailer. Logan must of thought what we are all thinking.

The slowing of our momentum made the blur of scenery outside refocus to a sharper image. My eyes could only stare out into the space as my brain was unable to process the outdoor beauty around us.

We are at a standstill in the middle of the road way. The silence is thick with horrible anticipation. Looking around my dome I notice a lever right next to my seat.

Pulling it, the seat retracts from the dome. Slowly the seat swerves to the inside of the trailer. Looking out above the space I take a deep breath, lower myself to the ladder on the wall and onto the floor.

As I look around, I find Junior is cowering in a corner covering his face.

Logan, Ruth, and Joseph promptly appear into the back.

Logan looks grim, her lips tightly pursed down. She pulls Junior up from his spot and shuffles us all to the exit without another word.

Skylar waits for us by the door. I catch a brief moment between Logan and Skylar. They were making a face I had always wanted to ask about.

I didn't realize it until now the significance of that look.

It was pure adoration for each other, a deep love their eyes reflected for one another that I had only started to understand.

They nestle close together for a brief moment, Logan pulling Skylar up for quick tender kiss.

Turning around they both envelope us in one last big hug before Logan pushed open the door.

" It will be Ok" she said with conviction.

Gosh I live for some exciting action sequences. The group certainly lives through some tense moments, its not all boring I promise.. Please comment, like or subscribe.
