Part Thirty Three

One again, I walked into a penthouse that's way too over the top.  It's not as amazing as Blaine's, but it is beautiful.  It's dark out and I can see lights as far as my eyes can see.  Just like Blaine's, it has windows from bottom to top, except these go up two floors.  A wrap-around set of metal stairs takes you to four bedrooms.  My bags were taken up, but Blaine went straight to the bar and poured himself a whiskey.

The bottom floor is completely open with the kitchen, living room, library, and dining room all in sight.

"How long will we be here?" I asked as I stood holding my purse.

He shrugged.  "I don't know, I guess until we find what we came for, and who knows what that might be. Could I take your coat?" He asked.

"Sure." I untied it, and he helped slide it off my shoulders.

"Thank you, I take it you've been in this penthouse before tonight?" He walked over to a closet and hung my coat up.

"Yes, I stayed here on my last trip." He said, then shut the closet door. "Could I get you a drink?"

"Thanks, but I can get it."

"Have a seat and make yourself comfortable.  I'll see what's in the fridge." He walked over and opened the fridge door.  "There's bottled water, iced tea, and lemonade."

"Lemonade sounds great," I said, but when he took it out, it didn't look like it was store bought.  It's a clear pitcher with lemons floating in the water. He poured it into a glass, then put it back in the fridge.

The woman in the bathroom at his hotel said his ex-wife's name is Ciara, so I wonder what kind of woman she is, and how she felt when she had to walk away.  He has only shown me a small amount of his softer side, which makes me curious how he is when he's comfortable.

I took a seat on the sofa, then he walked over with my glass and handed it to me before he sat down on a different couch facing me.

"What do you enjoy outside of work?" I asked.

He sat back and crossed his ankle over his knee.  "I golf, watch sports, and have dinner with friends.  I'm far from exciting, Cora."

I sat back and crossed my legs, before tasting the most amazing lemonade in my life.

"What do you enjoy?" He asked.

"Well, I live to shop, but my budget never compared to your sisters.  She and I both enjoyed the club scene, but honestly, I love to travel, oh, and I also love animals." I said.

"Why did you choose meteorology?" He asked.

"I like science and took earth science in middle school.  It was never a question of what I would do when I grew up." I answered.

"Has anything more came to mind about Cassidy since you found out about this Lance person?" He asked.

I shook my head.  "It's so strange, because they worked together before I came, and they just seemed like two people who worked together.  They played it off quite well. I never would have suspected they knew each other longer, and certainly not in such a personal way.  He never came to the house very often, and really only just ate lunch with us.  I guess he did go out to the clubs with us one night, but it was never obvious in any way.  He was part of the sales team. Was there anything on the personal files that showed anything out of the ordinary?" I asked, and he leaned forward.

"All that was found was the usual new hire paperwork and benefits packages. Nothing out of the ordinary or to indicate any strings were attached.  The only thing we found is they were hired by the same person, but he hired most of the secondary employees that started within a twenty year period.  They only worked there for about a year before you signed on with the station, then the hiring manager retired, but the investigators did not make contact.  We didn't want to tip anyone off and have them disappear on us.  This Lance fellow has been at work every day since Cassidy's death, which I also find strange.  I would have thought he might have taken off after she passed."  He said.

"Right, because her false identity would have led us straight to him if the link between the two was discovered.  Unless he wants to be found?  But wouldn't that put him in danger?" I asked.

He paused before he answered because my phone vibrated in my purse.  I looked at it and it's just Gray, so I ignored the call.

"Aren't you going to get that?" He asked.

Gray can wait.

"No, I'll call them back tomorrow.  Anyway, what we're you going to say?" I asked.

I probably need to stop ignoring Gray.  He has every right to know where I'm at because I'm sure he's worried.

"I asked the same question, and their only guess is that he must not feel like he's in danger.  We won't know until we talk to him tomorrow." He said.

"How are we going to work that out?" I asked.

"I have someone on him, he will let us know when it's a good time to approach." He said.

I just nodded and looked down at my glass.

"You look tired. I can show you to your room if you'd like to turn in for the night." He offered.

I'm exhausted.

"Thanks, I would appreciate that, I am a bit tired." I said.

He kindly showed me to my room, and I took a shower before bed.
